1B Eric Hosmer hit the first grand slam of his career as part of a big offensive night on Wednesday. He had a career-high tying five hits, scored five runs and knocked in six during the Royals' 16-2 win at Detroit. The seven-year first baseman also had five hits against Detroit on Sept. 20, 2011. The RBI and runs scored totals set career marks. Hosmer became the first Royals player to have at least five hits, five runs scored and five RBIs in a game.

1B Luis Valbuena continues to haunt his former teammates. Valbuena, who played for Cleveland from 2009 to 2011, doubled in a run in the second inning, and hit a game-tying solo home run leading off the seventh. He has hit home runs in three consecutive games, and in the first two contests in Cleveland he is 4-for-8 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs. Nine of his last 12 hits have been for extra bases.

OF Aaron Altherr was activated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and started in center field against the Astros. Altherr had been out since July 14 with a strained hamstring. Altherr, who is hitting .290 on the season, went 2-for-5 with a triple and scored twice in his return.

SS Andrelton Simmons reached base in eight consecutive plate appearances. The streak began with his final at-bat July 23 against Boston. In five plate appearances Tuesday in Cleveland, he had three hits and two walks and Wednesday, he was hit by a pitch and singled in his first two plate appearances. The streak ended when he grounded out in the sixth inning. The Angels' record for most consecutive plate appearances reaching base is 12, by Bobby Grich, in 1984.

OF Mike Trout was 3-for-5, all singles. He has hit safely in nine of his 10 games since coming off the disabled list. During that stretch, he is hitting .316. Trout also owns a career batting average of .324 in 21 games at Progressive Field.

OF Daniel Nava was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained hamstring. The move is retroactive to July 23. Nava is hitting .303 with an .808 OPS this season in 65 games.

1B Paul Goldschmidt is experiencing something of a falloff offensively in July following a standout month of June. Goldschmidt has two homers, nine RBIs and 26 strikeouts in July after having seven homers and 27 RBIs in June. Goldschmidt responded by going 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs scored. "You're watching him get back to doing what he's done much of the year with his approach -- doubling the other way with a lot of force on the ball. When he does that, you know he's in a good hitting position."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, a little earlier than was first expected. The plan was for him to make a fourth rehabilitation appearance Wednesday at Triple-A Reno, but that was altered after RHP J.J. Hoover had a terrible outing Tuesday in relief. De La Rosa pitched a scoreless ninth inning as Arizona won 10-3. De La Rosa went on the disabled list July 6 with shoulder inflammation after having a 5.40 ERA in six relief appearances. He signed a minor league contract with the team after appearing in only 13 games last season with Arizona because of a right elbow injury.

C Chris Iannetta normally catches LHP Patrick Corbin. With Corbin pitching Wednesday in a day game following a night game, Jeff Mathis was his catcher. "I know the game planning will be very similar," manager Torey Lovullo said. "C.I. (Iannetta) has a done a great job with Patrick getting him through moments, but it's really Patrick making the pitches, executing." Corbin lasted six innings, surrendering two runs in his second successive win.

RHP J.J. Hoover was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, following a rough outing Tuesday in which he gave up four runs, three earned, and three hits in one-third of an inning against the Braves. That performance jumped his era to 4.82 for the season. He didn't allow any scoring in three of his first four outings after returning from a nearly month-long stay on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, but the Diamondbacks obviously weren't satisfied with what they were getting. "We felt like it was the best thing for J.J. to go back down and continue working to get back to what he was early in the season," manager Torey Lovullo said. "We felt like it was the best thing for him to get back on track."

SS Zack Cozart was not in the starting lineup for the second straight game Wednesday. Cozart likely would have been in the lineup but he appeared to tweak his right quad running the bases after reaching as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game. Manager Bryan Price said the training staff was optimistic that the injury was nothing more than soreness but said he would know more Thursday in Miami. Cozart missed his sixth game since returning from a second disabled list stint June 30, but the previous instances were to rest it.

2B Dilson Herrera likely would have appeared with the Reds this season but will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to remove bone chips and his next games won't take place until next season. The Reds acquired Herrera at last season's Aug. 1 trade deadline when they sent OF Jay Bruce to the New York Mets. This season, he was batting .264 with seven home runs and 42 RBI in 68 games with Triple-A Louisville. Herrera experienced enough shoulder trouble that he was unable to play defense in major league camp during spring training, though he did so in minor league camp. "Probably the most important thing is that he gets it taken care of," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "I still think we've got a really nice player here that needed to have this correction done."

LHP Tony Cingrani continued to struggle as he allowed homers to SS Didi Gregorius and 3B Todd Frazier in the seventh inning. He has allowed at least one earned run in his last five appearances (11 earned runs, 5 1/3 innings). He also allowed at least one homer for the fourth straight outing and since returning from a strained right oblique June 6, Cingrani has posted a 6.63 ERA in 19 outings.

RHP Homer Bailey lost his third consecutive start Wednesday when he allowed seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits in six-plus innings. Bailey was in line to complete seven innings for the first time since Aug. 7, 2014 versus Cleveland but allowed the first four hitters to reach in the seventh.

RF Aaron Judge did not start for only the fifth time this season as manager Joe Girardi opted to give him Wednesday afternoon off to rest the slugger ahead of a four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays. Judge has 32 homers, but is 7-for-41 since the All-Star break.
