RHP Corey Kluber lasted only three innings in his start at Detroit on Tuesday, surrendering five runs on seven hits. He left the game with lower back discomfort. Kluber will be examined again Wednesday. Manager Terry Francona indicated Kluber has been fighting back soreness for weeks. "I thought it would be unfair to leave him in (longer)," Francona said. "You worry he's going to hurt his arm or something. We'll know more tomorrow."

"I made mistakes to three batters in a row (in the fourth), and they took advantage of them," said Kluber. "The park was playing small," Indians Manager Terry Francona said. RHP Corey Kluber split two calluses during his Opening Day start, but it shouldn't be an issue for him the next time he's scheduled to pitch. "I'm sure it didn't help him," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "But with the sweat going on and everything, they give you a lot of good stuff in the training room. I think things like that happen more than people realize."

RHP Corey Kluber allowed three homers Monday in the opener at Texas. But after giving up his third homer, he retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. "Once that (third) inning got out of hand, I just tried to take that approach and tried to keep them in it and give them a chance to come back," said Kluber, who worked through the sixth inning.
Mon Mar 27 201719:34Indians season preview: Roster loaded for another Series run
The American League champion Cleveland Indians reported to spring training with a roster that on paper was stronger than the one they used to get to the 10th inning of Game 7 of the World Series, before losing to the Chicago Cubs last year. Because of that, there wasn't much competition for jobs in camp. It was mostly a case of monitoring the progress of the returning injured players, ramping up the healthy players for the start of the season and evaluating the progress of selected prospects that will start the season in the minor leagues, but could be summoned to the major league club during the season. The biggest question at the start of camp was the health of All-Star outfielder Michael Brantley, who missed virtually all of the 2016 season with a shoulder condition that required two separate surgeries. The news on Brantley was good. He began playing in spring training games in late March, and there was growing optimism that he could begin the season on the major league roster -- or at... [More]

RHP Corey Kluber's workload in 2016 was immense. Counting the postseason, he started 38 games and pitched 249 innings, both career highs. Three of his six postseason starts came on short rest. He may bear watching in 2017, although he's been remarkably durable since emerging as one of the top starters in baseball three years ago. He has averaged 33 starts and 224 innings per year over the last three seasons, not counting the playoffs.
Thu Nov 3 201617:25Indians season-ending report: Optimism abounds despite Game 7 loss
It was the best of years and the worst of years for the Cleveland Indians in 2016.Ironically, it was how they dealt with the worst that made it the best, and despite the disappointment of losing Game 7 of the World Series, Cleveland looks toward the 2017 season with optimism.Despite playing virtually the entire season without their best player, Michael Brantley, half their season without starting catcher Yan Gomes, and the entire postseason with basically just 2 1/2 starting pitchers, the Indians came within one extra-inning loss from winning their first world championship since 1948.In assessing their needs for 2017, heart and spunk isn't on the list. That was driven home for manager Terry Francona, who had to navigate through the postseason without two of his top three starting pitchers. Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar were both injured in September. After beating Toronto in five games in the American League Championship Series, Francona sat down with pitching coach Mickey Callaway... [More]

RHP Corey Kluber made his third start of the World Series in Game 7, and, as was the case in Game 4, he was working on short rest. It showed. Kluber lasted only four-plus innings and gave up home runs to the first and last batters he faced. He was charged with four runs and six hits. Most tellingly, Kluber, who was fifth in the American League in strikeouts, didn't strike out a batter. "For our starters to have the guts to take the ball, like Corey Kluber three times, I think at times tonight they proved they're human. But without them, we don't get anywhere close to here," manager Terry Francona said.

RHP Corey Kluber will make his third start of the World Series in Game 7 on Wednesday. In four postseason starts, Kluber is 4-1 with a 0.89 ERA. Kluber also started, and won, Games 1 and 4 of the Series, posting a 0.75 ERA in those starts. As was the case in Game 4, Kluber will make his Game 7 start on short rest. "I haven't found much of a difference yet in the way I feel when I go out there on three days' rest as opposed to four," he said. "The only difference is spending more time trying to recover on those three days instead of having four days to do it."

RHP Corey Kluber (4-1 postseason) allowed one run and scattered five hits over six innings and picked up his second World Series triumph since Tuesday as the Indians won their second straight in Chicago. He struck out six and walked one and had just one troublesome inning -- the first -- as the Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead. "The first inning they hit two balls pretty softly that just happened to find holes," Kluber said. "But (I) really didn't try to change too much after that, just tried to keep going out there and make pitches." Kluber had previously pitched in Tuesday's World Series opener at Progressive Field, picking up the 6-0 win over Cubs lefty Jon Lester.
