Thu May 3 201815:25Cabrera breaks up Teheran's no-hit bid with 2 outs in 7th
NEW YORK (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera doubled down the right-field line with two outs in the seventh inning, ending a no-hit bid by Atlanta's Julio Teheran against the New York Mets. The 27-year-old right-hander retired his first 11 batters Thursday. Teheran walked Yoenis Cespedes on a 3-1 count in the fourth, then got nine more outs in a row on a summer-like afternoon with a game-time temperature of 90 at Citi Field. Cabrera doubled on a curveball with a 1-2 count.Teheran was pitching on five days' rest after cutting a start short at Philadelphia because of a tight trapezius muscle in the right side of his back.An All-Star in 2014 and 2016, Teheran entered 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts this year. His average fastball velocity this year had dipped by 2 mph to just under 90 mph.Going back to Wednesday, 40 of the Mets' last 42 batters had made out before Cabrera's double. Wilmer Flores hit a ninth-inning double in New York's 7-0 loss Wednesday.Teheran pitched no-hit ball into the seventh for the third time. Pittsburgh pinch-hitter Brandon Inge singled to break up a bid after 7 2/3 innings on June 5, 2013, and Philadelphia's Freddy Galvis led off the seventh with a single on Sept. 20, 2015.Atlanta led 11-0.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
Wed May 2 201820:25Diamond trouble: Cespedes snaps glitzy chain sliding into 2B
NEW YORK (AP) — Yoenis Cepsedes left it all on the diamond Wednesday night — or at least, probably several thousand dollars' worth. The New York Mets slugger snapped his glitzy necklace during a hard slide into second base in the first inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves, scattering gems around the infield.Cespedes hustled into the bag after blooping a ball down the right field line, and second baseman Ozzie Albies jumped over him while receiving a throw from the outfield. Cespedes was stretching after the play when he noticed one of his necklaces was broken, pulled it off his neck and furiously threw it to the ground. The Mets telecast showed what appeared to be diamonds glistening in the dirt near the bag. A half-inning later, New York second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera and second base umpire Bill Welke stooped around the base, apparently picking up pieces of the necklace.Cespedes also inspected the area on his way out to left field prior to the third inning, but seemed to come up empty.During last year's AL Championship Series at Yankee Stadium, Houston pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. snapped his necklace made of black diamonds while on the mound. He spent a lengthy replay challenge digging the diamonds out of the dirt.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

Sat Apr 21 201801:09Ross loses bid for Padres' first no-no in 8th vs. DBacks
PHOENIX (AP) — Tyson Ross lost his bid to pitch the first no-hitter in the history of the San Diego Padres when rookie center fielder Franchy Cordero appeared to misplay a ball with two outs in the eighth inning Friday night of a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Playing their 7,835th game since joining the majors in 1969, the Padres again came agonizingly close to their first no-no. They remain the only team in the big leagues that has never thrown a no-hitter.Ross had a 1-0 lead with two outs in the eighth when Christian Walker lined a drive to deep center. Cordero seemed to get a late break on the ball, then had it sail just over his outstretched glove for a double that made it 1-all. Ross was pulled after throwing a career-high 127 pitches. The right-hander, who turns 31 on Sunday, struck out 10 and walked three. He retired 18 straight after walking Jarrod Dyson in the first. Brad Hand (1-2) relieved Ross and got the last four outs — they combined on the 29th one-hitter in Padres'... [More]
