"We'll give him one quick game down there to make sure he feels good," manager Andy Green said. "If he checks that box, we'll probably have him back up here with us on Saturday to take batting practice and activate him on Sunday. C Austin Hedges is still at least a couple days away from being activated from the concussion disabled list. Hedges has been out since July 14 with was originally described as a "sub-concussive" injury. "Hedges is going to take batting practice today," Padres manager Andy Green said Wednesday. "He will do some catching on flat ground because no one is throwing a bullpen. We definitely want to get him catching the ball in a bullpen before we talk about activating him. We want to make sure he's seeing the ball and everything is going right. It's probably a few days off from activating him. At this point in time, we're not looking at a rehab assignment for him. If it carries on much further, we might look at it a different way. He hit in cage yesterday. He's a few days out."

C Austin Hedges was placed on the seven-day concussion list disabled list and sent back to San Diego to be examined by Dr. Kenneth Taylor, one of the Padres' team physicians. Hedges took a hard foul ball off his mask in the seventh inning Friday. He didn't play the past three days, although he was in the lineup Monday but was scratched after not feeling right while ramping up his activity before batting practice. Manager Andy Green said the team doctors advised getting Hedges out of Denver with its mile-high altitude and back to sea level in San Diego. "He feels better," Green said. "He might be able to pass an objective test, but he can't pass the test where you're like ready to play a game. We're hoping it's not much longer. At this point in time, though, his health is top of the list of priorities."
Tue Jul 18 201703:41C Austin Hedges scratched from lineup

Manager Andy Green said Hedges was "optimistic" he was going to be able to play Monday but as he increased his activity before batting practice discovered "he's still not quite right, and it's just still not worth challenging kind of the way he feels out on the field right now." Green has described Hedges as feeling "hazy," and when asked whether going on the seven-day concussion disabled list is a possiblity, Green said, "I don't know. We're three days in at this point in time, so we'll see how that all plays out. I don't know how that works -- if he's passing the (concussion protocol) tests, so to speak, but still can't get over the hump and play. As of right now, we don't have any anticipation of putting him on that at this moment."

C Austin Hedges returned from two missed games due to neck stiffness on Friday night against the Phillies and looked plenty healthy, knocking two solo home runs and driving in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 4-3 victory. It's the first career multi-homer game for Hedges, who entered the weekend with 11 home runs on the season and just 14 in his MLB career. The former 2nd-round selection back in 2011 flashed some power with Triple-A El Paso last year, knocking 21 homers in 82 games, including a string of five games in a row with one leaving the ballpark. "It was good to see him swing the bat well," Green said. "He's been working hard in the cage, he's been kind of scuffling a bit lately. I'm sure the two days [off] helped him reboot the system, too."

Rizzo tripled, bolted home on 3B Kris Bryant's sacrifice liner to center and barreled into Hedges after he caught a throw from CF Matt Szczur and defended the plate. "It's a cheap shot," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I'm not saying he's a dirty player, nobody's saying that (but) he clearly deviated from his path to hit our catcher. He took our catcher out." Green said he wasn't sure how long Hedges will be out.
