Wed May 11 201622:40Rangers' Griffin may return by end of May
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers received good news on A.J. Griffin's right shoulder. The right-hander could be back in the Rangers rotation by the end of the month. An MRI showed no structural damage to his sore and inflamed right shoulder, a team official said prior to the Rangers' 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Griffin exited his last start on Saturday against Toronto with tightness.Griffin will only begin throwing when he is free of soreness and inflammation."That's as positive of information as we could get," manager Jeff Banister said. "Now it becomes how he feels on the throwing side of it and how he responds."Concerns about Griffin were further heightened considering his missed all of the past two seasons with Tommy John surgery and shoulder problems. Griffin said this is something akin to the shoulder problem of 2012. He missed 26 games then. The 28-year-old has been good in his first six starts with Texas this season, posting a 3-0 record and a 2.94 ERA.The Rangers will skip Griffin's turn in the rotation with an off-day on Thursday. Lefty Cesar Ramos is expected to make a spot start in Griffin's place on Sunday against Toronto. After Sunday, Texas won't need a fifth starter until May 24. They expect that pitcher to be Griffin.

RHP A.J. Griffin was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after complaining of shoulder stiffness 2 2/3 innings into his start the previous day. Griffin, who missed two seasons following arm surgery, was idled as a precaution by Texas. "He was probably going to miss a start anyways," manager Jeff Banister said, "(so we decided to err) on the conservative side, given his history plus the number of innings he's thrown and pitches, let's allow this thing to calm down." The Rangers have the next three Thursdays off and Banister says this will allow him to need just one spot start before Griffin is able to return, if he can.
