Butler (3-10) gave up six runs on seven hits and a walk over just four innings in Thursday's loss to the Mets.
As usual, Butler had his moments, but struggled overall, as he's now given up a brutal 29 runs (all earned) over 30.1 innings spanning his last five outings. While his Coors Field numbers have been spectacularly brutal, his road numbers are pretty ugly too, but the Rockies seem set to let the talented 24-year-old keep pitching until he figures it out. Fantasy owners don't need to have the same degree of patience with Butler.

Butler (3-9) was handed the loss Saturday against the Nationals after giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks over six innings.
Butler did a fair job limiting the damage for the most part, as only two of the eight hits went for extra bases (both doubles), but he still put an unacceptable 12 runners on base before exiting the contest. The right-hander is now 0-4 over his last five starts, during which he's posted a 7.86 ERA (6.48 FIP) and a 14:13 K:BB ratio. Unsurprisingly, Butler's numbers have been far worse at Coors Field this season, but even his 4.34 ERA and .287 opponent's batting average on the road hardly provide a case for him to be a useful streaming option.

Butler took his eighth loss after serving up seven runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings Monday against Seattle. He struck out two.
Butler couldn't miss bats (four swinging strikes in 67 pitches) and gave up five extra-base hits including three home runs as a result. Butler has now given up 12 home runs in 14 starts and 87 hits in just 69.1 innings. How much of his issues can be ascribed to Coors Field is an open question, but Butler now has a 5.45 ERA and hasn't acclimated himself to the big leagues at all in 17 starts over the past two seasons.

Butler (3-7) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cubs.
A pair of homers accounted for all the runs, continuing an ugly trend for Butler -- in his last seven MLB starts, dating back to May 15, he's given up seven homers, and he's only picked up two quality starts in that span. It's never easy pitching for the Rockies, but Butler isn't helping his own cause with a hideous 36:36 K:BB. The 24-year-old is on schedule to next take the mound Monday in Seattle.

Butler lasted six innings Friday in a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in a 6-5 win over the Reds.
Butler had an unbearably embarrassing moment running the bases, but aside from that, this was a rather successful outing. With a 4.77 ERA and 1.79 WHIP, Butler is far from fantasy worthy. The bigger worry is that he has more walks than strikeouts this season. You simply can't trust him right now and he's virtually not ownable, even in NL-only. He'll look to build off this start against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Butler had his Sunday start against the Padres postponed in the top of the fifth inning. The game will not count on his official stat line.
Called up from Triple-A Albuquerque prior to the start of the game, Butler had been cruising through the first four innings, allowing no runs and two lone doubles to Matt Kemp. Though he won't get credit for the performance, Butler probably pitched well enough to earn himself another turn in the rotation. Sunday's postponement won't be made up until September, so the Rockies will likely just stick with their current rotation setup heading into the week. Expect Butler's next turn to come Friday at Coors Field against the Reds.
Sun Jul 19 201513:10Butler formally called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday
Butler was formally called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. He'll get the ball in the Rockies' series finale against the Padres.
Butler will assume the rotation spot of David Hale, who is sidelined with a groin strain. After getting demoted to Triple-A in early June in order to work on his off-speed pitches, Butler didn't show much progress in his six starts with Albuquerque, producing a 6.27 ERA. Even in the friendly pitching confines of Petco Park, Butler looks like a risky streaming option.

Butler now appears to be in line to receive a promotion back to the majors to start Sunday's game against the Padres, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
With manager Walt Weiss already ruling out top pitching prospect Jon Gray for the vacancy in the rotation and David Hale on the DL with a strained groin, it appears Sunday's turn will fall to Butler due to a lack of other attractive options more than anything. Butler scuffled mightily earlier this season with the Rockies, and hasn't done anything since returning to Triple-A Albuquerque to demonstrate that he's rectified his issues with spotting his pitches. In six starts with Albuquerque, Butler has a 6.27 ERA and a 22:16 K:BB ratio over 33 innings. If he's indeed called upon to start for the Rockies, Butler will likely need to deliver a competent performance in order to earn his stay in the rotation beyond Sunday.

Butler is 2-2 with a 6.27 ERA and 22:16 K:BB ratio over 33 innings (six starts) since being demoted to Triple-A Albuquerque in early June.
About 13 months ago, Butler was one of the most-hyped pitching prospects in all of baseball, but few young hurlers seemed to have lost as much prestige since that time. While Butler's uninspiring results in three starts for the big club last season were mostly attributed to his bout with shoulder soreness, the right-hander hasn't been afforded the same excuse during a 2015 campaign in which he's been ostensibly healthy. Instead, it's Butler's lack of control that's been his undoing, as he's now walked 46 batters across 87.1 innings between Triple-A and the big leagues. With that issue seemingly not improving during his stay with Albuquerque, it doesn't appear that a return to the Rockies is on the horizon for Butler until September.
Tue Jun 9 201518:32Butler optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday
Butler was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.
This comes as no surprise, as Butler's ERA (4.80) is identical to his K/9 ratio, which actually means he has been somewhat fortunate that his ERA is not even higher. There was a time when Butler was viewed as a potential savior for a Rockies' rotation that annually ranks as one of the worst in all of baseball, but his prospect star has faded dramatically over the last 18 months. Chris Rusin and David Hale will stick in the Rockies' rotation for now.

Butler allowed six runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Marlins on Friday night.
While Butler has a live arm and a good changeup, he hasn't figured out a way to keep hitters off balance at the big league level to this point. He'll take the ball at Coors Field on Wednesday against the Cardinals in his next scheduled start.

Butler won his third game of the season Saturday, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk over six innings, striking out three.
He looked very good in a road start against a bad Phillies team, lowering his ERA to 4.22 in the process, but it was only his first quality start of the season. Butler's next turn, at home to the Marlins on Friday, may not be so forgiving.
Sat May 30 201510:58Butler will start for Rockies on Saturday
Butler will start for the Rockies on Saturday, filling in for Jorge De La Rosa (hand), Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.
The Rockies had a day off Thursday, so Butler isn't quite pitching on short rest. He was scheduled for Monday, but is just having his turn in the rotation bumped up.

Butler surrendered four runs on nine hits across six innings pitched in Monday's win over the Reds.
Butler earned the no decision, walking two batters and striking out one. He got banged around pretty badly and now holds an ERA of 4.60 with a 2-5 record. Butler will get the Phillies on the road in his next start.

Butler lasted only three innings, giving up four runs- two earned- on six hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts in a loss to the Phillies on Wednesday.
Butler, coming off the shortest outing of his career in which he went 2.2 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Dodgers last week, did little better against the Phillies in losing his fourth straight. He labored to get through a 43-pitch first inning. He had a chance to escape unscathed but with two on and two outs, he short-hopped a throw to first on Maikel Franco's comebacker for an error, allowing Ryan Howard to score from third. Jeff Francouer followed with an RBI single and the Rockies faced an early 2-0 deficit. Butler allowed another two runs in the third, and his night ended early. He'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Monday at Cincinnati.

Butler was bombarded for four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks during Friday's loss to the Dodgers.
Butler sports a so-so 4.24 ERA over his seven starts, but he's been quite fortunate that figure isn't significantly higher. Opponents are hitting .302 against him, and he's now walked four-plus batters on four occasions, giving him a woeful 20:23 K:BB ratio over 34 innings. The only thing that seems to be preserving his rotation spot is the Rockies' limited organizational pitching depth.
Wed May 13 201519:23Butler's next start will come Friday against Dodgers
Butler's next start will come Friday against the Dodgers, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Butler will be afforded two extra days' rest between starts this time around thanks to Saturday's postponement and Monday's team off day. Chad Bettis will come up to start Thursday, with Butler to follow in what will be his second start of the season at Dodger Stadium. Butler gave up two runs on six hits and one walk, with four strikeouts over five innings, in a loss his last time against Los Angeles.
Mon May 11 201516:08Butler
Butler, who took a liner to the leg in Friday's rain-shortened loss to the Dodgers, will be able to make his next start Thursday, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
Butler's matchup will come against those same Dodgers, who tallied two runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings versus him Friday. Butler has been able to hold down a sub-4.00 ERA through his first six starts, but a 4.88 FIP and 5.4 BB/9 rate hint that his surface numbers may soon be in line for a correction.

Butler pitched 5.1 innings and gave up two runs in the 2-1 loss to the Dodgers Friday.
Butler technically pitched a complete game as the game was called due to rain in the top of the sixth and Butler was rather lucky as he was pitching with the bases loaded before the game was called. Butler allowed only five hits, but did have some control issues allowing four walks. Butler's next game is Thursday against the same opponent, the Dodgers.

Butler fanned three and walked two while giving up five runs -- three earned -- on four hits over four innings in a loss to the Padres on Friday night.
He needed 82 pitches to record 12 outs, and the ERA (3.81) remains unfounded by the peripherals. There is a lot of risk here, and Butler has only completed six innings once through five turns to the mound this season. Butler will make his next start at Coors Field on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
