DETROIT (AP) — Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night. The Yankees took the lead in the top of the inning when automatic runner Aaron Judge came home from third on a passed ball. Justin Wilson (1-1) retired the first two Detroit batters in the bottom half, but on a full count, Grossman sent a high drive that cleared the fence in left field. Rougned Odor homered and had four hits for the Yankees, who dropped a bizarre game that also included a three-ball walk for New York hitter Gio Urshela. Bryan Garcia (1-1) won in relief for Detroit. Each starting pitcher — Gerrit Cole for New York and Casey Mize for Detroit — was a former No. 1 overall draft pick. Mize, the top pick in the 2018 draft, allowed a run and five hits in five innings. He struck out seven with no walks. Cole was picked first overall by Pittsburgh in 2011. He allowed a run and six hits in six innings. ATHLETICS 3,... [More]

Wed May 19 202120:18Gleyber Torres off COVID-19 IL and back in Yankees lineup
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — New York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres was back in the starting lineup Wednesday night after being reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list. Torres, who is fully vaccinated, missed six games after testing positive last week. He was cleared to return by Major League Baseball's joint committee. Asymptomatic vaccinated people can be cleared if they test negative twice. Torres was batting fifth in the lineup for the third game of a four-game series at Texas. “It was good to see him walk into the brunch today,” manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously glad to have him back and good that he’s been able to get out and get a couple of days of work in and over at the complex (in Tampa) yesterday before he flew here. Certainly excited to put him back in the lineup.” Second baseman Rougned Odor was placed on the paternity leave list. The move came after Odor returned from the injured list after missing 12 games with a sprained left knee. Odor returned Tuesday night in a game... [More]
Wed May 19 202104:18LEADING OFF: Ohtani pitches, Kluber vs Rangers, Sox-Twins
A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ UP AND DOWN Shohei Ohtani (1-0, 2.10 ERA) makes his sixth pitching start of the season when the Angels face Aaron Civale (5-1, 3.40) and the Indians. Ohtani hit his major league-leading 14th home run during Tuesday night's 6-5 loss to Cleveland, connecting for the third straight day. The two-way star is the first pitcher since 1900 to rack up at least 40 strikeouts and allow 11 or fewer hits over his first five starts of a season. Los Angeles will again be without three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, who was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a strained right calf. Trout could be sidelined past the All-Star break after getting hurt on the bases Monday night. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks. “I felt a pop,” Trout said. "I knew it was bad when it happened. I’ve never felt anything like this before.” Trout leads the majors with a 1.090 OPS. The outfielder is hitting .333 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. Wed May 19 202102:48Turnbull gets MLB's 5th no-hitter, Tigers beat Mariners 5-0
SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit. A look at what’s happening around the majors on Wednesday: ___ TROUT TROUBLE Angels star Mike Trout could be out past the All-Star break after straining his right calf on the bases. Trout is expected to miss six to eight weeks. The three-time AL MVP made an early exit Monday night in a 7-4 win over Cleveland. He came up limping when he ran toward third on a popup that ended the first inning. “I felt a pop,” Trout said. "I knew it was bad when it happened. I’ve never felt anything like this before.” Trout leads the majors with a 1.090 OPS. The outfielder is hitting .333 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. TICKED-OFF TWINS A riled-up Twins team hosts the White Sox again in a series between AL Central rivals that's turned a little testy. Wed May 19 202100:18Hunter gets key hit as Mets beat Braves 4-3
ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets got homers from Jonathan Villar and Tomás Nido, an unlikely hit from Tommy Hunter and strong performances by a string of relievers to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Tuesday night. Villar hit a two-run shot in the third inning, and Nido won it for the Mets in the ninth with a tiebreaking drive into the left-field seats off struggling Braves closer Will Smith (0-4). One night after being struck in the face by a 95 mph fastball, Kevin Pillar brought New York’s lineup card to home plate before the game, a gesture that brought a huge sigh of relief to both teams. With his face swollen and badly bruised, Pillar still managed a smile as he shook hands with the four umpires and Braves coach Walt Weiss, who gave him a warm pat on the shoulder. Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman homered for Atlanta. Marcell Ozuna tied it for the Braves with a two-out, broken-bat single in the eighth off Jeurys Familia (2-0). Tue May 18 202121:18Yankees activate Odor from IL, back in lineup vs Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Second baseman Rougned Odor was activated from the injured list Tuesday by the New York Yankees and started the second of their four-game series against his former team, the Texas Rangers. Odor missed 12 games with a left knee sprain after a collision at home plate with Houston Astros catcher Martín Maldonado when trying to avoid a tag in a game May 4. “I feel great, feel ready to go now,” Odor said before the game. Odor hit a single in his first at-bat in the second, then made a nifty pick up the middle to start an inning-ending double play in the bottom half of that frame. The 27-year-old Odor played his first seven big league seasons for the Rangers, who designated him for assignment April 1 and left him off their opening day roster even when still owed two guaranteed seasons at $12 million each. He faced Texas for the first time, and said before the game it was a weird feeling. “It was tough. I think that’s tough for every player, like you have to leave the team... [More]

Mon May 17 202119:38Yanks DH Stanton 10-day IL (quad) , LHP Britton has setback
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday by the New York Yankees because of a left quad strain, and left-handed pitcher Zack Britton had a potential setback in his recovery from elbow surgery. The Yankees made the move with Stanton before the opener of their four-game series in Texas. It was retroactive to Friday, the day after he last played before being held out of all three games during a weekend series in Baltimore. Right-hander Albert Abreu was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Manager Aaron Boone said Britton was dealing with some soreness after his one-inning simulated game Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, when he threw to hitters for the first time. Boone said the lefty's planned rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Wednesday might get pushed back a couple of days. "I think just general soreness," Boone said. “It could just be related to the normal ramp-up of going into a sim game and facing... [More]
Wed May 5 202116:54Odor put on IL by Yankees with sprained left knee
NEW YORK (AP) — Second baseman Rougned Odor was put on the 10-day injured list by the New York Yankees with a sprained left knee on Wednesday. Odor was hurt Tuesday night when his knee slammed into Houston catcher Martín Maldonado’s head as he reached the plate and scored in the sixth inning of New York's 7-3 win. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Odor will be examined later Wednesday by head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad. “I think all things considered, we kind of lucked out,” Boone said. “It looked ugly to me right away, and I was pretty concerned. So I think it's going to be on the shorter side. I don't want to speculate until Dr. Ahmad kind of gives that prognosis, but I don't think it's going to be too long.” Odor appeared to be trying to avoid DJ LeMahieu’s bat, which was lying in the right-handed batter’s box after he hit a soft grounder to third for an infield single. Odor came around when third baseman Alex Bregman overthrew first for an error. Odor was acquired by the Yankees from Texas on April 6 and became a regular in the New York lineup with a coveted left-handed bat. The 27-year-old is hitting .164 with four homers and 11 RBIs. The Yankees recalled right-hander Albert Abreu from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered twice, including a grand slam, Gerrit Cole struck out 12 and the New York Yankees routed the Detroit Tigers 10-0.
