RHP Danny Farquhar got into the game at a time he said relievers dream of -- a tie game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th. The only problem is that he walked Orioles RF Seth Smith to hand Baltimore a 5-4 victory. "My mind-set was, obviously, to get ahead," Farquhar said. "By the time I started throwing strikes, it was too late. The zone was small."

The Seattle Mariners and Rays pulled off the first noteworthy trade of the offseason as they completed a six-player deal Thursday that sends infielder/outfielder Brad Miller, first baseman Logan Morrison and pitcher Danny Farquhar to Tampa Bay in exchange for pitchers Nathan Karns and C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league outfielder Boog Powell.New Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto and new manager Scott Servais began the process of making over the roster, trading away three players who got significant playing time in 2015.The Mariners' key acquisition is Karns, who was 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 27 games, including 26 starts, this season as rookie. His season ended in early September because of forearm tightness.Karns, 27, figures to move into the Mariners' rotation immediately.Riefenhauser, 25, was 1-0 with an ERA of 5.52 in 17 appearances this season.Powell, a 22-year-old who is no relation to the former Baltimore Orioles star of the same name, batted .295 with three home runs and 18 stolen bases in 117 games between Double-A and Triple-A in 2015.In Farquhar, the Rays acquired a 28-year-old reliever who was just 1-8 with a 5.12 ERA in 2015, but in 2014, he was 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA in 66 appearances.Morrison, 28, hit .225 with 17 homers while playing in 146 games, while Miller, 26, hit .258 with 11 homers in 144 games. Farquhar was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.
Farquhar struggled in his previous stint with the Mariners, recording a 5.75 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 36 innings. That being said, he could still provide some bullpen depth for a club that's desperate to find some consistency in the late innings.

Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after Saturday's game in which he loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th inning before walking in the eventual winning run.
Farquhar looks nothing like the 2.66 ERA pitcher from last year nor the one who saved 16 games in 2013. On Saturday, he walked the leadoff batter on four pitches, then gave up a double and an intentional walk to load the bases before another four-pitch walk. He was ultimately charged with three runs, one earned. He's struggled all year, bouncing between Tacoma and Seattle. Perhaps he will return in September.

Farquhar was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday.
Farquhar figures to begin in a middle-relief role and could move into a higher-leverage role with strong results. Since being demoted prior to the All-Star break, Farquhar has looked strong in 12.2 innings at Tacoma, allowing three earned runs in 12.2 innings with 13 strikeouts.

Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after Sunday's game against the Angels.
Farquhar threw four innings in three appearances during his latest stint with the big league club, allowing two earned runs (both off solo homers) and throwing four strikeouts. With the entire bullpen getting rest thanks to the All-Star break, the Mariners must have decided there was a roster option more viable than Farquhar that could now be called on.
