Thu Jul 19 201804:00With Leonard gone, a new look for Popovich and the Spurs
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The most tumultuous offseason in Gregg Popovich's two decades with the Spurs ended with the trade of star Kawhi Leonard to Toronto. And Popovich says he is fine with that. The Spurs traded Leonard and Danny Green to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a conditional 2019 first-round pick on Wednesday. It was clear that Leonard was ready to go despite years of success with Popovich and the Spurs."At his point, my main interest is definitely not to look back," Popovich said. "It doesn't do us any good whatsoever. I'm thrilled to have DeMar and Jakob join us. From that point on, that's where my focus will be."Popovich was jovial and heartfelt in speaking to the media for the first time since his wife, Erin, died April 18. Popovich did not coach the Spurs in the final three games of their first-round playoff loss to Golden State.Popovich said this offseason has been "difficult" for him, but it has not dampened the 69-year-old's desire to continue coaching."When... SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Kawhi Leonard is continuing his injury rehabilitation in New York with his own team of doctors, but is unsure when the star forward and "his group" will clear him to play."I don't know when he's going to feel, he and his group are going to feel like they're ready to go," Popovich said Sunday prior to a game against Houston. "If I knew, he'd be here. When he and his group feel he's ready, he'll be ready."Leonard has missed all but nine games this season while nursing right quadriceps tendinopathy, an injury that flared up late in the offseason. He returned to the team's lineup briefly but has not played since complaining of soreness in his injured thigh following the Spurs' home win over Denver on Jan. 13.Leonard opted to go to New York this week to work with his own team of doctors for the second time this season after first working with them prior to the All-Star break in February. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Spurs are preparing to play without star forward Kawhi Leonard this season, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.Leonard has missed all but nine games this season as he battles right quadriceps tendinopathy."We only have X number of games left this season and he's still not ready to go," Popovich said Wednesday. "And if by some chance he is, it's going to be pretty late into the season and it's going to be a tough decision. How late do you bring somebody back? That's why I'm just trying to be honest and logical. I'll be surprised if he gets back this year."Tendinopathy is a disease of the tendon that includes tenderness and pain, particularly during exercise.Leonard began experiencing discomfort in his leg late in the offseason, which caused him to sit out the team's training camp and preseason. Anderson led all Spurs scorers off the bench with 15 points (6-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-3 FT) while contributing four rebounds, three assists, and two steals over 26 minutes in Thursday's preseason loss to the Kings.
Anderson benefited from the Spurs resting four of their key regulars (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Boris Diaw), but nevertheless, it was nice to see the second-year swingman carry over the momentum from a huge Las Vegas Summer League performance that saw him come away with MVP honors. So long as the quintet of Parker, Ginobili, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, and Patty Mills remains healthy, it's difficult to envision Anderson parlaying his summer league and training camp achievements into a notable bench role right away this season, but it's probably safe to predict that any injury to one or more of those players will occur at some point. When that time comes, Anderson stands to gain a huge uptick in minutes, and thus, fantasy relevance.

Anderson earned Las Vegas Summer League MVP honors and helped the Spurs capture the tournament's championship title. He averaged 18.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 28 minutes per game during the entire summer league season.
Anderson participated in 10 games stretching from the Salt Lake City Summer League to the Las Vegas festivities. He shot 40 percent from the field and 24 percent on three-pointers, but he was able to slow down the game and take advantage of opponents' overzealous nature. While Anderson may eventually earn rotation minutes, his ability to replicate this performance to the NBA and supplant Patty Mills as the primary backup seems unlikely this upcoming season.

Anderson averaged 2.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 0.5 steals in 11 minutes per game through 33 games in 2014-15.
Anderson, the 21-year-old rookie who is under team control through 2018-19, played in the NBA D-League for 31 games, where he averaged 20.6 points, 0.6 three-pointers, 8.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.9 steals in 39 minutes per game. While not terribly efficient in the NBA games he played (35% FG, 27% 3Pt, 64% FT), Anderson's allure is his ability to handle the ball and see the floor as a point-forward in coach Gregg Popovich's mismatch offense. With both Danny Green and Marco Belinelli being unrestricted free agents this offseason, it's possible that Anderson could see more minutes next season.

Anderson saw limited minutes during the regular season so his inability to get on the court in the playoffs is not all that surprising. As a result, the rookie is a lackluster option in most postseason formats.
