RHP Shelby Miller of the Arizona Diamondbacks will undergo Tommy John surgery after mulling his options. Miller, who had a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, told reporters Saturday that he will have the season-ending procedure that is expected to sideline him for 12 to 18 months. Miller's MRI exam results were review by three doctors this week after he experienced tightness in the elbow during last Sunday's start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even that course of treatment would likely have kept him out for the remainder of the 2017 season."That's the thing, you don't want it to not work out and end up missing a lot more time," Miller said Thursday. "The biggest thing is I want to be back on the field. There's no doubt about that. I want to do that as soon as possible. But to be able to do that, is that the smartest thing to do? That's what we're looking into."Miller was 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts with Arizona. He did not allow more than three runs in either of those starts.

Mon Oct 3 201618:44Diamondbacks fire manager Hale, GM Stewart
One day after finishing a season in which they went 69-93, the Arizona Diamondbacks fired general manager Dave Stewart and manager Chip Hale, the club announced Monday.Stewart has been the Diamondbacks GM since September of 2014, when Arizona's chief baseball officer Tony La Russa hired Stewart to replace Kevin Towers.Stewart named Hale as the manager a few weeks later, and the Diamondbacks showed progress in the first year, going from 64 wins in 2014 to 79 wins in 2015.There were high hopes for the 2016 season with the addition of free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke and the acquisition of 2015 All-Star pitcher Shelby Miller via trade. But the Diamondbacks were never in contention for a playoff spot. They lost center fielder A.J. Pollock to a fractured elbow in the last week of spring training and Miller had a poor season, going 3-12 with a 6.15 earned-run average. What is noteworthy is that La Russa was not fired. His role or title may change."We are very grateful to Dave and Chip who are widely respected throughout the game of baseball," said Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall in a statement. "Ultimately, the results have not been what we had hoped and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we have decided that a change is necessary. We are still discussing what the appropriate role for Tony La Russa will be moving forward."
