Sat Dec 17 202220:30J.D. Martinez Signs With The Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed free agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez to a one-year, $10 million contract on Saturday. He reunites with hitting coach Robert Von Scoyoc and former Boston Red Sox teammate Mookie Betts. After smashing at least 28 homers in four of the last five seasons, the 35-year-old is coming off a down year, slashing .274/.341/.448 with 16 home runs, 62 RBI, and 76 runs over 139 games for Boston in 2022. Martinez will slot in as the Dodgers' primary designated hitter and should hit in the heart of the order with a loaded lineup that includes Freddie Freeman, Betts, and Will Smith. Martinez is in an excellent bounce-back spot and could be one of the better values in upcoming fantasy drafts.

Sat Oct 1 202213:32J.D. Martinez Absent From The Lineup On Saturday
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. This is just a day off for the 35-year-old veteran, who's been swinging a hot bat over the last five or so games. It's still been an underwhelming season for the slugger, who has a .271/.339/.438 batting line to go along with 14 home runs and 58 RBI across 520 at-bats. Xander Bogaerts is filling in at DH in Martinez's place.

Sat Sep 24 202211:22J.D. Martinez Retreats To The Bench Saturday
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the New York Yankees. Martinez is just taking a day off on Saturday, but fantasy managers need to act accordingly and remove him from their lineups as well. The veteran right-handed slugger has just 12 home runs on the season and is hitting .254 (15-for-59) with a homer, five RBI, six runs scored and 17 strikeouts in 16 September games. Martinez isn't having the year that fantasy managers expected when they drafted him. Bobby Dalbec is the designated hitter and is batting seventh on Saturday against Yankees right-hander Domingo German. In 304 at-bats in 2022, Dalbec is slashing just .211/.282/.362 with 11 homers, 36 RBI, 38 runs and three stolen bases.

Mon Sep 5 202215:09J.D. Martinez Not Starting Against Rays
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Martinez will start on the bench for the second straight day, but the Red Sox haven't given any indication yet that the 35-year-old slugger is dealing with an injury. Martinez is currently riding a four-game hitting streak in which he's gone 6-for-17 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Outfielder Tommy Pham is serving as the designated hitter on Monday and is batting leadoff against Rays right-hander Luis Patino. Pham has looked much better since being traded to the Red Sox, going 34-for-123 (.276) with four home runs, 15 RBI and 21 runs scored in 29 games. He'll be a nice DFS target in the leadoff spot.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is back in the lineup on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. Martinez received a day off on Friday but he's slotted in as the team's DH on Saturday and batting fifth. The 34-year-old has really struggled over his last 15 contests, slashing just .173/.279/.212 with no home runs, six RBI, and an ugly 19:8 K/BB ratio. He's got a chance to get right against Orioles starter Kyle Bradish on Saturday.

Fri Aug 19 202215:28J.D. Martinez Resting Friday
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles. It appears that Martinez is just getting a normal day of rest. Make sure to remove him from your lineups. He could use it, as he's gone just 9-for-52 (.173) with no homers, six RBI and 19 strikeouts in 15 games so far this month to drop his season line to .273/.344/.429 with nine homers, 46 RBI and 57 runs scored in 442 plate appearances. Rob Refsnyder will serve as the designated hitter on Friday and bat seventh against Orioles right-hander Jordan Lyles. Refsnyder is hitting .309 in 94 at-bats for Boston this year, but he has very little pop (four homers) and is a low-upside DFS option.

Wed Aug 3 202211:20J.D. Martinez Not Starting Against Astros
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. After not being dealt at Tuesday's trade deadline, the right-handed slugger will take a normal day off. Martinez is hitting .284 on the season with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 52 runs scored, but he's been cold since the All-Star break, going 3-for-30 (.100) with no homers, two RBI and eight strikeouts in eight games. His fantasy managers will be hoping that an off day on Wednesday can get him going again. Rafael Devers, who just returned from the injured list on Tuesday, will serve as the DH and bat third on Wednesday against Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy, with Christian Arroyo manning third and batting sixth.

Sat Jul 30 202221:29J.D. Martinez, Nathan Eovaldi, Christian Vazquez Could Be Traded
Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez, catcher Christian Vazquez, and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi could be moved by the trade deadline. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Martinez, Vazquez, and Eovaldi are all free agents to be and among the candidates to be traded. It remains to be seen where they will be traded; with Boston at a 50-52 record, the Red Sox will likely be sellers at the deadline. Martinez and Vasquez shouldn't take much of a hit in fantasy if moved, while Eovaldi could earn chances for more wins by moving to a playoff contender. Stay tuned.

Fri Jul 29 202218:46Mets Looking Into J.D. Martinez And Christian Vazquez
The New York Mets have scouts attending the Boston Red Sox's Friday night affair against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Ken Rosenthal. They are mainly there to see Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez and catcher Christian Vazquez. The Mets have been involved in rumors circulating around Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson and catcher Willson Contreras, but according to Rosenthal, they could pivot to a trade with the Red Sox if the Cubs price is too steep. If this is what ends up happening, expect the Mets to look for another deal to address their bullpen. If the trade does end up happening, the value of Martinez and Vasquez might see a slight boost in fantasy when lineup context is taken into account, but nothing too major.

Wed Jul 27 202208:22J.D. Martinez Reportedly Available In Trade Market
The Boston Red Sox have dropped four of five games since the All-Star break and are currently sitting in last place in the AL East at 49-49. With each loss, it's looking more and more likely that the team could be a seller at the trade deadline. On his Baseball Tonight podcast on Tuesday, Buster Olney stated that Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez "is out in the trade market." The 34-year-old is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this year, so it would certainly make sense for the club to move him if they weren't feeling confident in their playoff chances. Martinez is hitting .299/.367/.477 with nine home runs, 30 doubles, 38 RBI and 51 runs on the year.

The 34-year-old had a great first half of the 2022 season, slashing .302/.368/.481 with nine home runs, 30 doubles, 38 RBI and 51 runs over 81 games.

Tue Jul 26 202200:21J.D. Martinez Was Available To Play Monday
Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez (back) did not play in Monday's 3-1 win over the Guardians but was available, per Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo. The 34-year-old has now missed four consecutive games with back spasms, but the fact that he was available is a positive sign. Fantasy managers will be glad to see him return to their lineups, as he is slashing .302/.368/.481 with nine home runs and 38 RBI. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on the lineup card Tuesday, but it sounds as though Martinez could make his second-half debut.

Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez (back) will miss his fourth straight game on Monday as the team takes on the Cleveland Guardians. Martinez is currently hampered by back spasms. Sat Jul 23 202212:40J.D. Martinez Still Out Saturday
Boston Red Sox outfielder/designated hitter J.D. Martinez (back) remains out of the starting lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays after he was scratched from Friday's lineup due to back spasms. It's not a good sign that the 34-year-old slugger is already injured coming out of the All-Star break, but fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. Martinez is hitting .302/.368/.481 this year with an .849 OPS, nine home runs, 38 RBI and 51 runs scored, so losing him for an extended period of time would hurt the Red Sox and fantasy managers alike. Franchy Cordero is serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth, while Bobby Dalbec starts at first base and is hitting sixth against Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah on Saturday.

Sun Jul 3 202213:46J.D. Martinez, Trevor Story Sitting Out On Sunday
Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez and second baseman Trevor Story are both getting the day off on Sunday as the team closes out its three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Christian Arroyo will be covering second base for the game while Franchy Cordero will be slotting in at designated hitter. Martinez has been struggling lately, going just 1-for-21 across his last five games. However, he still owns a strong .307/.377/.487 slash line on the year. Story, meanwhile, has been stuck in a near season-long slump as he's slashed just .222/.298/.411 with 12 homers over 71 games on the year.

Fri Jun 24 202213:01J.D. Martinez Looks To Break Recent Slump Vs. Guardians
After getting off to a hot start in April and May, Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is struggling a bit in June. After slashing .406/.467/.604 in May, Martinez is slashing just .247/.325/.452 in June with three home runs and seven RBI. In addition, Martinez is slashing just .091/.125/.091 in the last week heading into a three-game series this weekend against the streaking Cleveland Guardians. Martinez is a risky play right now in standard fantasy leagues until he breaks out of his slump.

Tue Jun 7 202209:54J.D. Martinez Goes 2-for-3, Doubles Versus Angels
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double on Monday as the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 in the series opener. Martinez is currently on a four-game hitting streak, and the 34-year-old is 5-for-16 over that stretch with two extra-base hits and three runs scored. Martinez is off to a great start in 2022. So far this season, Martinez ranks in the 90th percentile in barrel rate, the 98th percentile in xSLG and the 98th percentile in xOBA. For his career, Martinez is 1-for-2 lifetime against Reid Detmers, Tuesday's starting pitcher for the Angels.

Sun Jun 5 202212:50J.D. Martinez Resting Sunday
Boston Red Sox outfielder/designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics. Martinez will get a regular day of rest in the series finale after starting seven straight games since May 29. The four-time All-Star slugger has been phenomenal for fantasy managers in 2022, slashing .353/.415/.543 with a .959 OPS, five home runs, 23 RBI and 33 runs scored in 195 plate appearances over 44 games played. He's a no-brainer must-start when he's in the lineup. Jarren Duran will be the DH and will hit leadoff, while Franchy Cordero is in right field and is batting seventh on Sunday against A's right-hander Frankie Montas. Duran went 2-for-5 in his second game for Boston on Saturday, and he'll be an intriguing DFS play with upside in the leadoff spot.
