Fri Aug 22 201416:36Upton out of lineup Friday against Reds
Upton is out of the lineup Friday against the Reds.
Just when it seemed like Upton couldn't sink any lower, he has hit .132/.270/.283 in August (17 games), lowering his overall OPS down to .611. Manager Fredi Gonzalez finally caved and removed Upton from the leadoff spot earlier this month, and it seems he'll take it a step further and start sitting him more regularly over the final weeks of the season. Emilio Bonifacio will man center field and bat second in his absence Friday.
Mon Aug 18 201415:18Upton out of lineup Monday
Upton is out of the lineup Monday.
The Braves have finally started to sit Upton roughly every fourth day, as his .207/.278/.329 slash line has dipped steadily over the past two weeks. Emilio Bonifacio seems to be a more trusted option in center field for manager Fredi Gonzalez than Jordan Schafer was when he was the backup option.
Thu Aug 14 201410:26Upton out of lineup Thursday against Dodgers
Upton is out of the lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.
Upton has made three straight starts in center field, but Emilio Bonifacio will cover center Thursday for the third time since coming over to Atlanta in a deadline deal. Upton has just four hits so far in August, and if he's unable to improve his .210 season batting average, look for Bonifacio to start filling in for him more frequently.
Sun Aug 10 201417:26Upton out of lineup Sunday against Nationals
Upton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports.
Upton hit a home run Friday night but went hitless again last night in what has been a season to forget. Emilio Bonifacio will start in center field and lead off for the Braves on Sunday.
Fri Aug 8 201416:56Upton will return to leadoff spot Friday against Nationals
Upton will return to the leadoff spot Friday against the Nationals.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez's insistence on batting Upton leadoff is one of the more puzzling things in the game currently, but it does not appear as though he's going to budge even following eight consecutive losses. Emilio Bonifacio led off the last two games in Seattle, but it looks like he'll be deployed in a utility role for the time being. Upton is batting just .212/.281/.327 this season and has struck out 141 times, most in all of baseball.
Wed Aug 6 201419:14Upton moved down to eighth in Braves order Wednesday, finishing ...
Upton was moved down to eighth in the Braves order Wednesday, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two strikeouts against the Mariners.
He was the leadoff hitter in his last start, as has been the case for much of the season, but it seems losing has finally forced manager Fredi Gonzalez to see the light. The Braves are now suffering through an eight-game losing streak, and while we'd never underestimate Gonzalez's insistence on batting Upton (.279 OBP) high in the order, he may finally be out of the leadoff spot for good. Emilio Bonifacio started in left field and hit leadoff Wednesday.
Tue Aug 5 201417:58Upton out of Braves' lineup Tuesday against Mariners
Upton is out of the Braves' lineup Tuesday against the Mariners.
Upton's career numbers against Felix Hernandez are downright abysmal -- he's recorded just three hits and has struck out 11 times in 31 at-bats (.097 average) -- so manager Fredi Gonzalez will turn to Emilio Bonifacio to man center and lead off Tuesday. Gonzalez has stuck by Upton all season, however, and it does not appears as though a changing of the guard is imminent.
Sun Jul 27 201422:24Upton scores twice, Braves roll past Padres
B.J. Upton went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored as the Braves beat the Padres 8-3 on Sunday.
Upton has found a home atop the Braves lineup, as he's now scored 22 runs in 28 games from the leadoff spot. He's also managed to put up a line resembling league average, hitting .243/.306/.360 in the top spot before Sunday's game. He's still striking out too much and isn't hitting for as much power as we're accustomed to seeing from Upton, but it's a start.

Mon Jul 21 201423:24B.J. Upton goes 0-for-5 in loss
B.J. Upton went 0-for-5 from the leadoff spot Monday in a loss to the Marlins.
Believe it or not, Upton has scored 15 runs in his 22 games as a leadoff man. Still, we're talking about a guy with a .270 OBP this season. It's ridiculous that he's getting set up to get more at-bats than everyone else in the Braves lineup.

Mon Jun 30 201423:33B.J. Upton goes 2-for-4 in Braves' win
B.J. Upton collected a couple of singles and a walk Monday in the Braves' 5-3 win over the Mets.
The Braves got four of their runs in the eighth, when pitcher Jeurys Familia, center fielder Juan Lagares and third baseman Eric Campbell all committed errors. Apart from that, the Braves didn't really make any noise when they weren't getting help. Still, it was good enough. Upton has now hit in seven straight games, though this was his first multihit game of the streak (all of the rest were 1-for-4s or 1-for-5s). Even with the "surge," he ends the month hitting .198, dropping his overall average from .216 to .209.

Wed Jun 25 201400:02Both Uptons homer as Braves edge Astros 3-2
B.J. Upton went 1-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season as the Braves held on to beat the Astros 3-2 on Tuesday.
Upton hit a solo home run in the third inning, and his brother, Justin, hit a solo shot in the fourth. For B.J., the homer was his first since June 12. He'd also gone a stretch of eight games without an RBI before Tuesday. He's got just 22 RBI in 72 games this year.

Tue Jun 24 201415:44B.J. Upton hitting leadoff Tuesday vs. Astros
B.J. Upton will hit leadoff against the Astros on Tuesday.
It will be his first start out of the leadoff spot this season. It's an interesting choice given that Upton has just three hits in his last 23 at-bats and owns an underwhelming .202/.272/.327 batting line on the year, but Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez isn't ready to give up on him yet. Tommy La Stella will bat second Tuesday.

Thu Jun 12 201418:08B.J. Upton hits sixth homer in loss
B.J. Upton hit his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot off Adam Ottavino, in Thursday's loss to the Rockies.
The homer gave him just his second multi-RBI game of the season. The other came courtesy of a three-run homer back on May 1. The best that can be said about Upton's campaign to date is that he hasn't been as much of a liability as last year. That's especially true for fantasy purposes; he's already two-thirds of the way to last year's homer total, five-sixths of the way to last year's steal total (10 vs. 12) and ninth-tenths of the way to last year's run total (27 to 30). He still hasn't been good by any means.

Fri Jun 6 201419:04B.J. Upton scratched from Braves lineup
B.J. Upton was scratched from the Braves starting lineup on Friday.
Upton will be arriving to the ballpark late as he was with his wife for the birth of their child. He should be available off the bench and return to the starting lineup on Saturday.

Tue Jun 3 201422:31Upton hits fifth homer in loss to Mariners
B.J. Upton went 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored against the Mariners on Tuesday.
He also stole his ninth base of the year. Upton hit the home run, his fifth of the year, off Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez in the second inning. After reaching base in his first two at-bats, Upton struck out in his final three plate appearances. He's now hit in five straight games, bringing his average up to .221.

Fri May 30 201422:20Upton has go-ahead sacrifice fly vs. Marlins
B.J. Upton hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and drew a walk in a win over the Marlins on Friday.
Upton's sacrifice fly off Tom Koehler in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame. While he played hero on Friday, Upton hasn't seen a marked improvement at the plate since he started wearing glasses. He's hitting just .209 in May.

Thu May 22 201422:50B.J. Upton homers, walks in win over Brewers
B.J. Upton went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Brewers.
Upton went deep against Matt Garza in the sixth inning for his fourth blast of the season. The center fielder got his OPS back over .600, a dubious achievement. Despite wearing glasses at the plate, Upton isn't having any more success than he did during his dismal 2013, slashing .200/.282/.335.

Sat May 17 201416:51B.J. Upton fans four times in loss to Cards
B.J. Upton had an especially rough day at the plate in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.
The dismal effort drops Upton's already disappointing season slash to .203/.272/.329 with 56 strikeouts in 141 at-bats. The Braves have already dropped him down in the lineup, but perhaps it's nearing the point where he should be sat down altogether.

Wed May 14 201418:08B.J. Upton gets ejected for arguing
B.J. Upton was ejected from Wednesday's game in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes.
Upton had just struck out for the eighth time in the series and the sixth time looking. The last pitch he saw was clearly a ball -- a few inches outside -- and it's not surprising his frustration boiled over.

Thu May 1 201422:24BJ Upton's 3-run HR, SB not enough vs. MIA
B.J. Upton went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and a three-run home run in Thursday's loss to the Marlins.
Since he started wearing glasses, Upton has hit safely in five consecutive games, though he's logged just five hits in 22 trips to the plate overall. It's tough to say if they're actually making a difference. Regardless, he was a big factor in the Braves' offense on Thursday, taking Henderson Alvarez deep to left field for a three-run blast in the third inning to put the Braves on top 3-2. He also swiped his fifth bag in six attempts.
