INF Deven Marrero was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday.

Marrero started at third base and went 1-for-4 with a homer in Monday night's win over the Yankees. The homer was Marrerros' first of his career.

Marrero is sharing third base with Brock Holt while Pablo Sandoval (pneumonia) has been shelved for the season. He's not getting everyday playing time, but his exposure to the major leagues may lead to a big-league job next season -- probably not with Boston, who are all set at shortstop with Xander Bogaerts, but Marrero's major-league ready glove could be attractive to another team in need of a shortstop.

Marrero started at third base in place of Pablo Sandoval (illness) on Wednesday and went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.

While Sandoval is out for a stretch of games, Marrero and Brock Holt will fill in for him.

Marrero started at shortstop in place of the resting Xander Bogaerts on Wednesday and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in a win over Baltimore.

Marrero's had over 600 plate appearances at the Triple-A level, so there's not much, if any, development needed. The problem is that he's blocked by Bogaerts, whose 3.9 WAR ranks third among shortstops in MLB. The Red Sox are getting him acclimated to second and third base, creating an opportunity for him as a utility infielder, but it's a shame to waste his shortstop glove. He could be used in a deal during the offseason when the Red Sox are presumed to be in the market for an ace pitcher.

Marrero was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday.

With rosters now expanded, Marrero will return to the Red Sox after the team optioned him on August 11. The shortstop has seen limited action for Boston (just seven at-bats), and he's hitting .256/.316/.344 across 102 games at Pawtucket.

Marrero did not have a plate appearance in his most recent stint with the Red Sox, but is 1-for-7 overall on the season. Over 274 at-bats at Triple-A Pawtucket this season, Marrero is batting .237 with five home runs, 72 strikeouts, and 24 walks. The Red Sox activated Mookie Betts from the concussion disabled list in a corresponding move Tuesday.

Marrero played 70 games at shortstop, seven games at second base and one game at third base while at Triple-A, but Xander Bogaerts would seem to be in pretty good shape in terms of job stability at shortstop. This means Marrero will likely see the bulk of his action at second base with Dustin Pedroia out, but in reality Marrero will porbably be lucky to see more than two or three starts per week. He was hitting .237 with five home runs and 10 steals in 78 games at Triple-A.

Marrero received just seven at-bats during a stint in the majors that lasted four weeks. He has struggled against Triple-A pitching for a second consecutive season, but his glove is considered big-league ready. With Xander Bogaerts seemingly entrenched at shortstop in Boston, Marrero might be more useful to another organization, if he can improve his hitting a bit.

Marrero made his first major league start Wednesday, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in a loss to the Blue Jays.

Marrero filled in at second base for Brock Holt, who had played every inning of every game since June 5. The young infielder has not been used much since being called up.

Marrero made his major league debut Sunday, entering the game as the second baseman after Mike Napoli was ejected. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Boston's win over Tampa Bay.

After Napoli's ejection, Brock Holt moved from second to first base, necessitating Marrero to fill in at second. Marrero will be Boston's utility guy while Holt fills in for Dustin Pedroia (hamstring) at second base. He has had some experience playing second and third base, but is primarily a shortstop.

Marrero was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

With Dustin Pedroia headed for the disabled list, the Red Sox are adding some infield depth by recalling the 24-year-old Marrero. He batted .241 with four home runs and nine steals at Triple-A this season. Marrero's best chance of seeing the field will be on days when Brock Holt gets a start in the outfield.

Marrero will play games at second base and third base, the Boston Globe reports.

The organization is attempting to increase his position flexibility, something that could aid his path to the majors or enhance interest in the trade market. Marrero is an MLB-ready defender at shortstop, but is blocked right now by Xander Bogaerts.

Marrero credits his early-season success at the plate to being more aggressive and attacking the pitches for which he's looking, the Providence Journal reports.

Marrero is also standing taller in the box, putting his hands in a better position to drive through the ball, but he feels attacking pitches is the biggest factor in his .389/.476/.556/1.032 slash line through six games. "Every at-bat, you're going to get one or two pitches to hit, maybe, so I'm trying to be ready for that pitch when it comes," he said.

Marrero had two hits, both doubles, a walk, a run scored and knocked in two runs for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. He added a stolen base.

The big question on Marrero is if he'll hit enough, particularly after he hit .210/.260/.285 in 50 games with the PawSox last year. So far, he's been a pleasant surprise with four hits, three doubles, two walks and four RBI in 15 plate appearances. He's currently blocked at the major league level by Xander Bogaerts, but his glove is ready now. If Marrero can sustain a .270 average, he'll be an attractive trade piece should Boston be in a position of need later this season.

Marrero was reassigned to minor-league camp Thursday, Maureen Mullen of CSN New England reports.

With Xander Bogaerts healthy, there was never much doubt Marrero would open his season at Triple-A Pawtucket. The 24-year-old shortstop is big-league ready as a defender, but he struggled at the plate in Triple-A ball last season, and he's never hit for much power. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington mentioned during the offseason that Marrero has drawn a lot of outside interest, indicating that the organization is willing to move him for the right price. If Marrero gets off to a strong start this season, a shortstop-needy team might look to trade for him as a solution in the majors.
