RHP Deolis Guerra, who pitched two scoreless innings for the Angels on Sunday, was designated for assignment Monday. The move cleared a spot on the active roster for the return of RHP Huston Street from the disabled list. Guerra, 27, had no decisions and a 6.75 ERA in three relief appearances for Los Angeles this season, all in the past week.The Angels acquired Guerra from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Rule 5 draft in December.

RHP Deolis Guerra was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday. Guerra, chosen from the Pittsburgh Pirates in December's Rule 5 Draft, accepted an assignment to Salt Lake when the Pirates chose not to reacquire him. After beginning the season on the disabled list because of an appendectomy, Guerra made his season debut for Salt Lake on May 6. In three games covering five innings, Guerra conceded no runs, two walks and three hits while striking out seven.

Guerra (knee) was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday.

His peripherals (9.2 K/9, 1.6 BB/9) suggest he's pitched much better than the surface numbers would indicate.

Guerra's history as a starter in Minnesota's system came in handy in the 14-inning affair. He allowed three hits while striking out three. The righty didn't walk anyone and helped out a depleted Pittsburgh bullpen. Guerra has now logged five scoreless innings in four days with the Bucs.

Guerra pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his major-league debut Saturday against the Braves.

The Venezuelan native, who threw to Venezuelan catcher Francisco Cervelli, allowed a double to Pedro Ciriaco but otherwise pitched well. Guerra threw eight of 11 pitches for strikes. He's not expected to work high leverage situations, but after 10 seasons in the minors, he's finally been rewarded with a stint in the majors.

Guerra has been dominant at Triple-A, posting a 1.23 ERA with a 37:8 K:BB ratio in 36.2 innings of relief. He will take Rob Scahill's place in the big league bullpen and could stay up with the team for an extended run if he pitches well.

The 25-year-old has done little of note since his first professional season in 2006, most recently going 2-2 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 36 appearances with the Twins' Triple-A Rochester affiliate. He did average better than a strikeout per inning (9.3 K/9), but figures to again spend most of the year as organizational depth in the minors.
