Herrmann started at first base in Wednesday's split squad loss to Boston. He went 0-for-3 but is hitting .438 (7-for-16) this spring.

Herrmann is competing against ric Fryer and Josmil Pinto for the backup catcher role, but he could make the roster in addition to Pinto with his versatility to play the outfield. He's trying to add first base as well this spring to give him more flexibility.

The Twins won't be using him much at catcher, however, with Kurt Suzuki signed to an extension and Josmil Pinto clawing for playing time himself.

Herrmann will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester prior to the Twins' game Tuesday against the White Sox, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

With the ability to play catcher, first base and the corner outfield, Herrmann will give the team some needed versatility as the Twins play out the string on a losing season. Given his 6-for-42 performance with the big club across 18 games earlier this season, Herrmann likely won't see much action aside from the occasional spot start.

Herrmann is just 4-for-24 since returning from the DL for an injured thumb at Triple-A Rochester.

Despite his slump at the plate, he's a candidate to be called up to the majors as a third catcher in September.
