Tue Oct 13 202019:30Greinke says he prefers playing without fans in ballparks
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Houston Astros pitcher Zack Greinke said he’s enjoyed playing games without fans during the pandemic-shortened season and in the playoffs. “I don’t really notice fans when the game’s going on, but warming up and practice before games, I mean for me it’s nice not having fans in the stands,” Greinke said Tuesday before Game 3 of the AL Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. “Most people like it. When the game comes on it’s the same for me.” Asked to explain, he said: “Because then there’s no one there to talk to you and ask for autographs and want pictures and all that stuff. I don’t like to do that stuff. It’s nice not having them, for me. Most people like it. I don’t like it.” Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner with Kansas City, discussed during spring training in 2013 that he had social anxiety disorder since before high school but no longer considered it a problem. He did not mention anxiety on Tuesday. Some fans are being allowed to NL Championship Series... [More]

Thu Oct 8 202013:34Greinke gets the call for Astros in Game 4 of ALDS vs. A's
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Zack Greinke will start for the Houston Astros in their Game 4 AL Division Series matchup against the Oakland Athletics. Manger Dusty Baker made the announcement on Thursday three hours before the scheduled first pitch. The right-hander is Houston's most experienced starter but has been dealing with arm soreness. Greinke threw off flat ground after Tuesday's game and told Baker Thursday morning he was ready to go. Houston is a win away from reaching the AL Championship Series for the third straight year. “He had to hear from the doctor he didn’t have anything structurally wrong with his arm, which eased his mind. It made it easier for him to make the decision,” Baker said. The 36-year-old Greinke has struggled down the stretch. He has pitched five innings or fewer in each of his last four starts, including the wild-card series opener against Minnesota, allowing 12 earned runs over 18 2/3 innings in that span. Baker said he wasn't sure how long Greinke could go against the Athletics. His other concern is Houston's bullpen, which has been taxed during the first three games. “We hope to get as many quality innings as Greinke can give us and not have too many bullpen innings. The longer your starter can go the less mixing and matching you have to do,” Baker said. The bullpen had not allowed an earned run in its first four postseason games, but gave up five runs and six hits Wednesday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Oct 7 202021:44Baker doesn't have many options for Astros Game 4 starter
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dusty Baker wanted his Houston Astros to knock out the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday so his team could get rest and maintain momentum. Houston's 9-7 loss in Game 3 of the AL Division Series gave the A's another chance. Baker is 3-13 in potential postseason close-out games in five- and seven-game series, losing 10 straight, so he knows about the dangers of letting opponents stay alive. “You try to ice them as soon as possible. You want to get it over as soon as possible with no panic but try not to let them get off the mat," Baker said before Wednesday's game. Houston is batting .302 with 22 runs and hit eight home runs against the Athletics. But a young pitching staff that lost Justin Verlander to Tommy John surgery and Gerrit Cole to free agency is beginning to show its inexperience in postseason play, Baker's bullpen options were limited Wednesday, and his options for a Game 4 starter on Thursday aren't that great, either. “Right now I don’t even know my options,”... Tue Sep 29 202018:48Giolito, White Sox beat A's 4-1 in wild-card round opener
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Lucas Giolito dazzled in his postseason debut, stymieing the Oakland Athletics through six perfect innings and sending the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory in the opener of their best-of-three wild-card series Tuesday. Giolito (1-0), who pitched a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on Aug. 25, didn’t allow a baserunner to the AL West champions until Tommy La Stella’s single up the middle to start the seventh. Giolito gave up one run on two hits over seven innings, struck out eight and walked one before giving way to Evan Marshall after a stellar 100-pitch outing. Giolito got plenty of support: José Abreu hit a two-run homer and Adam Engel also connected for Chicago against Jesus Luzardo (0-1). Yasmani Grandal homered in the eighth. Alex Colome, Chicago’s third reliever, worked the ninth for a save in the 2-hour, 53-minute game. Now, Oakland must win Game 2 on Wednesday at home to avoid another early playoff exit. The A’s are in the postseason for a third straight year,... [More]

Thu Sep 24 202000:44Rays clinch first AL East title in 10 years
NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Arozarena homered twice and the Tampa Bay Rays clinched their first AL East title in 10 years Wednesday night with an 8-5 victory over the New York Mets. Joey Wendle and Brandon Lowe also went deep to help Tyler Glasnow (5-1) win his fifth straight decision. Tampa Bay will be home at quirky Tropicana Field for a best-of-three first-round playoff series beginning next Tuesday. It is the third division crown for the thrifty Rays, who also won the AL East in 2008 and 2010. Their inaugural season was 1998. After missing a chance to clinch Tuesday, the Rays went into Wednesday again needing just a win or a New York Yankees loss against Toronto to lock up the division championship. The Rays (37-20) broke a 2-all tie in the sixth on Arozarena’s two-run homer off Michael Wacha (1-4) and pulled away. As has become customary during this pandemic-shortened season, the celebration was muted. After Nick Anderson fanned Andres Gimenez for the final out, the closer exchanged a hug... [More]
