With Kendall Graveman suffering a strained oblique Sunday afternoon, Brooks may get a shot to rejoin the big-league rotation, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Brooks made three starts for the A's earlier this month, turning in two excellent outings and a disastrous one. He's since made one start for Triple-A Fresno, allowing two runs over five innings. Brooks will likely start Saturday's game in Arizona if he's called up to replace Graveman (oblique).

Brooks was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

Brooks turned in a pair of strong outings to begin his tenure in Oakland, but he had major lapses in his last two outings and will head down to Triple-A for the time being. He was shelled for eight earned runs against the Blue Jays earlier in the week and gave up a walkoff home run in Baltimore on Friday. The A's recalled Pat Venditte and Dan Otero on Saturday in a corresponding move.

Brooks (1-1) was bombed for six hits, two walks and eight runs in just 1.2 innings during a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

He'd surprised with a pair of sparkling starts in his first two outings since being dealt to Oakland, so this was necessary regression for Brooks, who hasn't shown an impressive capacity to miss bats or keep batters off the basepaths in the minors, what with the career 6.9 K/9 and 1.29 WHIP he notched in the Royals' system. It's not likely that he'll be bumped from the rotation, though, so Brooks will be there for those fantasy owners who are willing to give him a mulligan when he next starts Monday against Baltimore.

Brooks gave up one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven in seven innings Thursday against the Astros. He didn't factor in the decision.

Brooks, part of the July 28 trade that sent Ben Zobrist to Toronto, had a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed only two runners over his final five innings, leaving with a 2-1 lead. The A's went on the blow the lead and waste the strong outing by Brooks. Over his past two starts, the 25-year-old rookie has given up a total of two runs in 14.1 innings and has a 12:1 K:BB ratio. He'll look to keep it going in his next scheduled start Wednesday at Toronto.

The 25-year-old came into the game having allowed three runs in 4.1 innings of relief on the season, but he won't have to worry about going back to the bullpen if he keeps pitching like he did in this one. Brooks hasn't issued a walk in the majors this year, and his 1.77 BB/9 in 17 starts at the Triple-A level suggests control is his strength. Oakland isn't making the playoffs in 2015, which means Brooks should have a long leash to showcase what he can do at the major league level after being acquired in a trade with the Royals, and this performance was an excellent start. The righty will have a stern test in his next outing Thursday, when he takes on the division-leading Astros.

Aside from two relief appearances with the Royals, Brooks has spent the entire season in the rotation at Triple-A Omaha, where he's produced a 3.71 ERA and a 92:21 K:BB ratio over 106.2 innings. The right-hander will now receive a look as starter in the big leagues, but if he fails to impress in Saturday's outing, he could immediately be sent back to Triple-A.

The Royals brought Brooks up to serve as the 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader, but he did not end up appearing in either game of the twin bill. Brooks, who has posted a 3.59 ERA in 82.2 innings with Omaha this season, will provide the team with some length Wednesday night, but he may head right back down Thursday to create a spot on the roster for the returning Yordano Ventura (arm).

Brooks only stayed with the Royals for two days, allowing three runs over 3.1 innings as a mop-up man in Sunday's 13-2 loss. He has a 3.42 ERA and 9.0 K/9 as a starter for Triple-A Omaha this season, and he's a candidate to make spot starts for the Royals later in the year.

Kansas City optioned Yohan Pino in a corresponding move to bring up the 25-year-old righty. Brooks posted a 3.42 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 71 innings at Triple-A Omaha this season, but it doesn't appear that he'll figure into Kansas City's rotation--at least immediately--as it already announced that Danny Duffy would get the start Wednesday.

The Royals called up Joe Blanton to eat innings in low-leverage spots out of the bullpen and Brooks will now serve as organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A.

Yohan Pino threw 63 pitches in Monday's loss to Texas, and the Royals likely want to have a fresh arm available in case they need another long-relief effort Tuesday night. It won't be surprising if Brooks is swapped back out for Pino at some point in the near future.

Brooks' first cup of coffee in the majors was one to forget, as he surrendered a whopping 13 earned runs in his two appearances (2.2 innings) with Kansas City back in May. The 24-year-old has displayed excellent control throughout his time in the minors (1.4 BB/9) and was better at Triple-A Omaha last season (3.88 ERA, 1.26 WHIP), but he figures to transition to minor league camp after only a couple spring outings with the big club.

If the Royals hadn't been so desperate to get some innings out of him, he would have been pulled after walking three, hitting two and retiring none of the first eight guys he faced. He was able to get a double-play ball from Anthony Gose at that point, but then he gave up two more singles, forcing Ned Yost to pull him. He'll head back to the minors now.

With a tough matchup though, he should probably be avoided for streaming purposes on Saturday.
