LHP Roenis Elias has been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. In three appearances (one start) for the Red Sox, Elias was 0-1 with a 12.91 ERA. In 17 appearances, at Pawtucket Elias is 8-4 with a 3.72 ERA.

LHP Roenis Elias was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Sunday's game. Elias faced nine batters in the final two innings of a 16-2 rout of Arizona, giving up a run on four hits. He is 0-1 with a 12.91 ERA in five games (one start) this year.

Elias, 0-1 with a 15.88 ERA in two appearances with the Red Sox this season, provided an extra arm for a beleaguered Red Sox bullpen, although he did not pitch, after the team sent six relievers to the mound in Wednesday's blowout defeat. LHP Roenis Elias was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to make his first start for the Red Sox against his former team the Mariners on Friday and it didn't go well. Elias allowed two runs on his first three pitches and lasted just four innings. He surrendered seven runs on seven hits and after the game was optioned back to Pawtucket. The Red Sox did not immediately announce a corresponding move.

LHP Roenis Elias, acquired from Seattle in December, will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to make his first Red Sox start in the opener of a three-game series against the Mariners on Friday night. Elias, 15-20 with a 3.97 ERA with the Mariners, has been on a roll at Pawtucket, going 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA in his last five starts, and now joins the battle for the Red Sox' fifth starter spot. "This is someone who I think prior to the start of the season had made 40-plus (actually 49) starts at the big-league level so he might have been a little bit surprised that he didn't make our staff coming out of camp," manager John Farrell said before Thursday night's game. "He came up a couple of times and pitched out of the bullpen with some limited success but was back to a role he was most familiar with and that's a starting role and got on a little bit of a roll -- so he handled that ... I think that initial demotion, took a little time to get through but he's been on track. The work has been very good -- the routines, more than anything have been consistent (and) he gets an opportunity here to run with it starting tomorrow."

LHP Roenis Elias will make his first start with the Red Sox on Friday against Seattle. "We looked at Seattle and the matchups and felt like a left-handed starter has proven to maybe negate some of their left-handed power," manager John Farrell said (via?WEEI.com). Elias, 15-20 with a 4.04 ERA in 52 big league games, is 4-3 with a 3.54 ERA in 10 games with Triple-A Pawtucket.

LHP Roenis Elias and RHP Carson Smith were acquired by the Red Sox from the Mariners in exchange for RHP Jonathan Aro and LHP Wade Miley on Monday.Elias, 27, went 5-8 with a 4.14 ERA over 115 1/3 innings in 22 games (20 starts) with the Mariners in 2015. He also made 12 starts with Triple-A Tacoma, going 4-2 with a 7.34 ERA over 61 1/3 innings.

Elias was fortunate to record a no-decision on Saturday, as he allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks in just two innings in a loss to the A's.

This was just a nightmare outing for Elias, as he was pulled in the third leaving the bases loaded. Luckily for him, only one of those base runners scored as Tony Zych limited the damage. This is a disappointing ending to the season for Elias, as he was starting to pitch very well over his last five starts. In that span, he had a 2.01 ERA, 10.7 WHIP and 10.5 strikeout per nine ratio. It will be interesting to see if he's able to crack the rotation next season. If he does, Elias could be a nice streaming option.

Elias took a no decision in a quality start Monday against Houston, as he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.

Elias recovered from a pair of first inning solo home runs to throw five subsequent shutout innings. Elias has now served up 14 home runs in the majors and 23 counting his 61.1 innings at Triple-A this season, the most he has allowed in any professional season in his career. If he can figure out a way to keep the ball in the yard, he'll be able to maintain his spot in the rotation. His ERA is down to 3.89.

Elias returned to the rotation with 5.1 innings of one-run ball Wednesday in Kansas City, though he walked four while allowing four hits to go with his six strikeouts.

He hadn't started since Sept. 12, with a one-batter relief appearance in between. Control issues continue to haunt Elias, but the lefty's moderate groundballing ways have kept his ERA from inflating out of control. in fact, at 3.94, it's now under 4.00 for the first time since June.

Elias will shift to the bullpen for the next day or so and is expected to return to the rotation next Tuesday in Kansas City, the Tacoma News Tribune's Bob Dutton reports.

James Paxton will be moved up to pitch Friday with Vidal Nuno taking the ball Saturday. Elias has a 3.42 ERA in 23.2 innings in the second half.

Elias fell to 4-8 Monday against Texas as he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Elias was wild and inefficient and needed 102 pitches to get through 5.1 innings, but he also induced 12 swinging strikes. Elias has been electric at times, and Monday marked his seventh start of the year with at least six strikeouts. If he can find a way to limit the home runs (12 in 16 starts; 1.1 HR/9), Elias has potential to become an average or better starter.

Elias took a no decision Tuesday against the Astros as he allowwed four runs on five hits and four walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out four.

Elias has allowed 18 baserunners in 12 innings since his return to the rotation, a 1.500 WHIP. He wasn't sharp at all Tuesday night, as he induced just seven swinging strikes in 100 pitches and threw first pitch strikes to just 13 of 25 batters. His ERA is up to 4.35.

Elias (4-7) had his first start in two months on Thursday and hurled a quality start, allowing four (three earned) runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings in a loss to the White Sox.

It was clear that Elias was a bit rusty, as the nine hits were the most he has allowed all season long. Aside from two seven-run outings in the middles of June, Elias has not allowed more then four runs in any of his other 12 starts. Elias was brought in to replace Vidal Nuno in the rotation and it remains to be seen if he'll remain in the rotation for his next scheduled start on Tuesday against Houston.
