RHP Hector Rondon had a 1-2-3 day for his 15th save of the season and second in consecutive appearances on Saturday. He had a save in the Cubs' 6-5 victory over the Pirates just before the All-Star break.

It appeared as though Rondon would get the night off until Fernando Rodney allowed to batters to get on to start the ninth. Rondon put out the fire in relative ease and he seems to be one of the only bright spots in the Cubs rotation. With a 1.43 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 63 strikeouts in 63 innings, Rondon is establishing himself as one of the best closers in baseball.

He is the preferred option, so they will be content to let him handle the job as long as he avoids major meltdowns.

He needed just eight pitches (six for strikes) to retire the Southsiders, and would appear to be pretty firmly entrenched as the Cubs closer heading down the stretch. He can still be volatile at times, but he is the guy they want finishing games and they are likely to stick with him as long as he keeps the blowups to a minimum.

After getting into a jam of runners on second and third with no outs -- the result of a base hit, an error and a wild pitch -- Rondon appeared on the verge of getting out of it by striking out the next two batters. But with Jean Segura at the plate, Rondon threw another wild pitch, allowing Ryan Braun to score the tying run in the ninth. In his last appearance on Sunday, Rondon worked out of a bases-loaded jam with none out by striking out the side.

Rondon struck out the side and earned his 19th save of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Giants on Sunday.

It wasn't easy, as Rondon put three runners on base before striking out three in a row. He threw a whopping 36 pitches in the inning, but with the Cubs not playing again until Tuesday night, he should be ready to go if needed.
