Tue Jul 13 202121:00The Latest: Freeman comes up short, AL takes 1-0 lead
DENVER (AP) — The Latest on the All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Coors Field (all times local): 6:55 p.m. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman joked that Yankees slugger Aaron Judge made him look short, then had a ball bounce right over his head. Freeman, wearing a mic for Fox's broadcast, bemoaned having to look up at the 6-foot-7 Judge when he reached first on a leadoff walk against Milwaukee's Corbin Burnes in the scond inning. Boston's Rafael Devers then skipped one right over the 6-foot-5 Freeman that went for a double. Judge scored the game's first run a batter later on Marcus Semien's infield single. Freeman said the highlight of his All-Star week was introducing his son, Charlie, to Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. Charlie Freeman had been begging his dad to make the All-Star team so he could finally meet Tatis. White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn replaced Shohei Ohtani on the mound for the AL in the bottom of the second inning. He worked around a walk to Cincinnati's Jesse Winker... [More]

Mon Jul 5 202103:28Brewers have comfortable lead after 11-game winning streak
The Milwaukee Brewers have taken advantage of an easier stretch in their schedule -- and they now have the largest division lead in the major leagues. Milwaukee had won 11 in a row prior to a loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Brewers have a seven-game advantage over second-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta have been impressive in the rotation, and the offense has done its part lately, averaging 7.6 runs a game during the winning streak. Of those 11 straight wins, eight came against the Rockies, Diamondbacks and Pirates, who are among the worst teams in the National League. The other three victories were against the Cubs, who have dropped nine in a row. The wins all count the same, however, and in the NL Central, one extended run of success has been enough to give the Brewers a comfortable margin at the top. While Woodruff and Burnes have led the way, Milwaukee has gotten contributions from plenty of unsung players. Avisal Garca and... [More]
Sun Jul 4 202120:38Ohtani 1st All-Star picked as pitcher and hitter
NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani achieved a first in the near century history of baseball’s All-Star Game: selection as both a hitter and pitcher. The Los Angeles Angels’ two-way sensation was among the American League starting pitchers picked Sunday for the July 13 showcase at Denver’s Coors Field. Ohtani, who leads the majors in home runs, had already been elected by fans to start as the AL's designated hitter. Boston has the most All-Stars for the first time since 2009, sending five. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez, starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and reliever Matt Barnes were chosen to join a pair of starters: shortstop Xander Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers. Houston and Toronto have four All-Stars each. Ohtani received 121 votes in balloting by players, managers and coaches announced three days after fan-elected starters were revealed. “The guy’s going to participate in Home Run Derby, pitch in the game and hit in the game. That doesn’t happen like, ever,” Angels manager Joe... [More]

Thu Jul 1 202101:41LEADING OFF: Arenado's Coors return, Ohtani back in box
A look at what's happening around the majors today: ___ ROCKY RETURN Nolan Arenado will return to Coors Field for the first time since the Colorado Rockies traded the disgruntled third baseman to St. Louis over the offseason. The eight-time Gold Glove winner hit .293 with 235 homers and an .887 OPS over nine seasons in Denver, but the fan favorite was traded two years into a $260 million, eight-year contract amid an at-times public rift with Colorado's front office. Arenado is hitting .267 with 16 homers and an .833 OPS in his first season away from the Mile High City. The Rockies have floundered without him, falling well below .500 and hitting just .196 as a team when away from their hitter-friendly ballpark. BACK IN THE SWING Shohei Ohtani is expected back in the batter's box after flopping on the mound Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. The Angels' two-way phenom got only two outs during his highly anticipated first pitching appearance in the Bronx, chased after four walks and charged with... [More]

Sun Jun 6 202123:44La Russa gets 2,764th win, passes McGraw for 2nd place
CHICAGO (AP) — Tony La Russa moved past John McGraw into sole possession of second on baseball’s career manager wins list, directing the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. It was win No. 2,764 for La Russa, who was hired by Chicago in October for his first managerial job since he led St. Louis to the World Series championship in 2011. It has been a bit of a bumpy ride so far, but the 76-year-old Hall of Famer has the White Sox on top of the AL Central. Second on the list is almost assuredly the highest finish for La Russa, who also began his managerial career with the White Sox in 1979. The top spot belongs to Connie Mack with 3,731 victories. La Russa watched as Chicago won for the 10th time in 14 games. Dylan Cease (4-2) struck out 10 in seven sparkling innings, Liam Hendriks worked the ninth for his 15th save and Tim Anderson had two hits and two RBIs. José Ureña (2-5) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. PHILLIES 12, NATIONALS 6 PHILADELPHIA... [More]
