The Cincinnati Reds-St. Louis Cardinals game scheduled for Saturday afternoon was postponed due to severe weather. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking into allegations made in a civil lawsuit against right-handed starting pitcher Carlos Martinez.Martinez, 24, was excused from the team on Friday so he could travel to South Florida and deal with the suit filed against him, according to ESPN.The allegations could trigger an investigation under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy."We are just learning of this matter. I was notified by Carlos' agent the other night," general manager John Mozeliak said Saturday. "We will not be in a position to act until we have more information."A woman filed the suit in district court in Miami, stating she began her relationship with Martinez in 2012 and rekindled it recently, according to TMZ Sports.Martinez is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 28 innings this season. He was at the stadium Saturday and the lawsuit is not expected to affect his scheduled start on Sunday, according to a ESPN.

Martinez will not pitch in the playoffs as well after suffering the injury in his last start Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that Martinez will not require surgery to correct the issue, and he should be ready for the start of next season. "It's probably anywhere from like four to eight (weeks recovery), and the fact that we would still have to get him throwing, it's not practical," Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Our medical staff believes he will be ready to go and fully recovered by spring training. I think that's really the way you have to look at this." Martinez went 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA in 179.2 innings this season.

Martinez (shoulder) will undergo an MRI on Saturday, but "early strength tests" are positive, Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

Martinez left Friday's start after just seven pitches with what was described as tightness in his pitching shoulder. Saturday's MRI should give provide some clarity for Martinez's availability for his final regular season start next week.

It wasn't obvious what was ailing Martinez, but the right-hander was replaced in the top of the first after giving up a ground rule double to Scooter Gennett and getting Logan Schafer to fly out. Martinez's success has been one of the better stories of the season, and it would be a significant blow to the Cardinals if this turned out to be anything serious.

Martinez registered his 14th win of the season Sunday against the Cubs, allowing two runs in 6.2 innings and striking out six.

Martinez ran into some serious trouble in the third inning, loading the bases with Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant up to bat, but he was able to limit the damage to two runs scored. Some later trouble in the eighth inning endangered his win, but the Cardinals were able to induce a double play and a strikeout to get the win.

Martinez took a no decision but was dominant Tuesday against the Brewers, as he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out nine.

Martinez had allowed at least three runs over his past eight starts, a span in which he owned a 5.16 ERA and saw his season mark jump from 2.34 to 3.12. Martinez was back to his All-Star form Tuesday, as his nine strikeouts tied his second-best mark of the season. His 77 Game Score also marks his second best of the season, trailing only a seven shutout inning performance May 31 against the Dodgers.

Martinez had a strange line of Wednesday, as he allowed three runs on 10 hits across five innings while striking out eight in a no-decision against the Cubs.

It was a hit-or-miss performance for Martinez and that's indicative of his second half of the season thus far. Not only has he allowed at least three runs in six straight starts, he's hasn't gotten past the seventh in six of his last seven starts. It's not the home run ball that's killing him, as he's allowed 60 hits over his last 45.1 innings, with only two dingers. Martinez is simply out of control right now, as he's not finishing his pitches how he should. He's falling much farther over to the left side of the rubber than he was at the beginning of the season and the Cardinals pitching staff is surely working with him on his mechanics. He could help fantasy owners in their playoffs though as he has a two-start week next week against the Brewers and Cubs.

Martinez has had a very promising first season as a fulltime starter, ranking in the top 20 in the league in both ERA and K/9. After another rough outing, however, it is fair to wonder whether the young hurler is tiring out. After posting a 2.57 ERA through Aug. 5, Martinez has recorded a 5.04 ERA in his past five starts.
