Sat Feb 9 201903:25Healthy Wainwright optimistic heading into season for Cards
ST. LOUIS (AP) — At 37, Adam Wainwright remains confident in his ability to still be effective on the mound for the Cardinals.Wainwright made just eight starts in an injury-plagued 2018 season, giving up 12 earned runs on 22 hits in 22 1-3 innings. He still struck out 25 and walked just four, but it was a frustrating season: He had a hamstring injury and started the season on the disabled list. He came back and made three starts. Then he returned to the 60-day DL with a sore right elbow. In his rehab outing before returning in September, Wainwright pitched 17 scoreless innings. His best outing was a two-hit, six-inning scoreless outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his next-to-last start.Wainwright showed himself and the Cardinals he could still pitch."I want to win. There's still a big part of me that thinks that I'm going to win a Cy Young," Wainwright said. "So, I mean, even if that's pitching in middle relief, I'd be the first one to ever do that."Last October, Wainwright inked... [More]

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez will be shut down for the rest of the season because of a shoulder strain, according to the team's official website. Martinez will not pitch in the playoffs as well after suffering the injury in his last start Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that Martinez will not require surgery to correct the issue, and he should be ready for the start of next season. "It's probably anywhere from like four to eight (weeks recovery), and the fact that we would still have to get him throwing, it's not practical," Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Our medical staff believes he will be ready to go and fully recovered by spring training. I think that's really the way you have to look at this." Martinez went 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA in 179.2 innings this season.

Fri Sep 25 201520:36Carlos Martinez: Early Exit Friday
Martinez left Friday's game against the Brewers after throwing just seven pitches, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
It wasn't obvious what was ailing Martinez, but the right-hander was replaced in the top of the first after giving up a ground rule double to Scooter Gennett and getting Logan Schafer to fly out. Martinez's success has been one of the better stories of the season, and it would be a significant blow to the Cardinals if this turned out to be anything serious.

Martinez took a no decision but was dominant Tuesday against the Brewers, as he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out nine.
Martinez had allowed at least three runs over his past eight starts, a span in which he owned a 5.16 ERA and saw his season mark jump from 2.34 to 3.12. Martinez had a strange line of Wednesday, as he allowed three runs on 10 hits across five innings while striking out eight in a no-decision against the Cubs.
It was a hit-or-miss performance for Martinez and that's indicative of his second half of the season thus far. Not only has he allowed at least three runs in six straight starts, he's hasn't gotten past the seventh in six of his last seven starts. It's not the home run ball that's killing him, as he's allowed 60 hits over his last 45.1 innings, with only two dingers. Martinez is simply out of control right now, as he's not finishing his pitches how he should. He's falling much farther over to the left side of the rubber than he was at the beginning of the season and the Cardinals pitching staff is surely working with him on his mechanics. He could help fantasy owners in their playoffs though as he has a two-start week next week against the Brewers and Cubs.

Martinez (13-7) took the loss against the Pirates on Friday, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings.
Martinez has had a very promising first season as a fulltime starter, ranking in the top 20 in the league in both ERA and K/9. After another rough outing, however, it is fair to wonder whether the young hurler is tiring out. After posting a 2.57 ERA through Aug. 5, Martinez has recorded a 5.04 ERA in his past five starts.

Martinez (back) will return to the mound in a key start against the Pirates on Friday, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports.
He was skipped in his previously scheduled appearance, but the Cardinals have a chance to essentially wrap up the division this weekend, so it will be all hands on deck. Owner of a 2.91 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, Martinez has been one of the true breakout starting pitchers of 2015.

Mon Aug 31 201518:39Carlos Martinez: (Back) Won't Make Scheduled Start Tuesday
Martinez (back) will not make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Nats, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Martinez is dealing with a minor back injury - he downplayed the issue Monday - but with the Cardinals sitting comfortably atop the NL Central, they can afford to give Martinez a rest. St. Louis is yet to announce who will take the hill in Martinez' place, but per the Post-Dispatch report, Marco Gonzales is the top candidate.
