Smith had the initial diagnosis of an ankle sprain confirmed by his MRI results Monday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

The team didn't offer a timetable, but the Angels' setup man will likely be out a matter of weeks, which would mean his season may be over if the team can't sneak into a playoff spot.
