Ruggiano was the fourth man in the Cubs' outfield, but has been moved to the Mariners, where he could compete for a spot in right field. The 32-year-old hit .281/.337/.429 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 2014 with the Cubs.
Tue Nov 4 201416:38Ruggiano (ankle) activated from 60-day DL on Tuesday
Ruggiano (ankle) was activated from the 60-day DL on Tuesday, Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald reports.
An ankle injury forced Ruggiano out of action in mid-to-late August and ultimately ended his season, and he also battled hamstring and groin issues throughout the year, but the 32-year-old posted a respectable .281/.337/.429 batting line in his 81 games in 2014. That said, he'll likely have a hard time earning a starting role in spring training, as Chris Coghlan, Arismendy Alcantara and Jorge Soler looked pretty well locked in, but Ruggiano figures to break camp as the team's top reserve outfielder.
Tue Sep 2 201415:32Ruggiano (ankle) transferred to 60-day disabled list Tuesday
Ruggiano (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Ruggiano's move to the 60-day DL comes as no surprise. He won't play again this season and the move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for the plethora of call-ups the Cubs announced Tueday.

Ruggiano (ankle) underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on his left ankle Friday and is out for the year, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Ruggiano must have received bad news from the specialist he visited Friday, and will now miss the remainder of the season. Jorge Soler was called up to replace him on the roster, and with Ruggiano's contract finished at the end of the season, his future with the Cubs is questionable.
Thu Aug 28 201410:52Ruggiano (ankle) will visit specialist
Ruggiano (ankle) will visit a specialist, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
The Cubs will send Ruggiano for an examination to gauge the true extent of the ankle issue, with his soreness failing to subside in recent days. A possible return date for Ruggiano is currently up in the air -- he's eligible to come off the DL on Sept. 7 -- but his opportunities will likely be limited upon activation, as top prospect Jorge Soler is expected to see most of the time in right field over the remainder of the season.
Wed Aug 27 201415:52Ruggiano (ankle) placed on 15-day DL on Wednesday
Ruggiano (ankle) was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Ruggiano's move to the DL clears the way for the beginning of the Jorge Soler era, as the top prospect was recalled from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. The Cubs would clearly like to see Soler shine immediately in right field and lock down the positions for seasons to come, so barring a total collapse on the 21-year-old's part, it's unlikely that Ruggiano sees regular action once he returns from the DL.

Ruggiano (ankle) remains out of the Cubs' lineup Tuesday against the Reds.
A late scratch from Saturday's lineup due to left ankle soreness, Ruggiano is set to miss a fourth straight start Monday as a result of the injury. The team has given no indication that Ruggiano is in danger of landing on the DL, so consider him day-to-day for the time being.

Ruggiano was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to left ankle soreness.
The full extent of the issue is uncertain, but consider Ruggiano day-to-day until the team indicates otherwise. Ryan Sweeney will start in right field and bat fifth in place of Ruggiano, who has started just three of the Cubs' last eight games.
Wed Aug 20 201417:17Ruggiano out of lineup Wednesday against Giants
Ruggiano is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Giants, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Wednesday's absence will mark Ruggiano's second in a row and fifth in the team's last eight games. A couple of those absences were due to a groin issue, but it looks like Ruggiano will remain in a part-time role now that he's healthy. Ryan Sweeney will draw the start in right field Wednesday.
Fri Aug 15 201415:13Ruggiano out of lineup Friday against Mets
Ruggiano is out of the lineup Friday against the Mets.
There has been no word of a setback with the groin injury that has cost Ruggiano time recently, but it seems the team will be mindful of his workload in the short-term as to avoid aggravation. Ryan Sweeney will draw the start in right field against right-hander Zack Wheeler.
Thu Aug 14 201411:38Ruggiano (groin) back in lineup Thursday against Brewers
Ruggiano (groin) is back in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers.
Ruggiano missed Wednesday's contest due to groin injury, but it was considered to be minor, as the outfielder was said to be available to pinch hit. He wasn't needed in this role, but will return to action in right field for the Thursday afternoon contest. When healthy, Ruggiano should play right field on most days, as Nate Schierholtz was placed on release waivers Wednesday after being designated for assignment a week earlier.
Wed Aug 13 201417:42Ruggiano out of lineup Wednesday due to groin injury
Ruggiano is out of the lineup Wednesday due to a groin injury, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
Ruggiano missed some time late last month with a groin issue, but this setback is not considered serious and he will be available to pinch hit Wednesday. Perhaps the team will take precaution and give Ruggiano another day off Thursday, but it seems likely he'll be good to go for the majority of the Mets series.
Wed Aug 13 201415:59Ruggiano out of lineup Wednesday against Brewers
Ruggiano is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Brewers.
Ruggiano has made four straight starts in right field, but will give way to Chris Coghlan on Wednesday, while Junior Lake takes over in left. Ruggiano has hit safely in seven of his past eight games, but has just one RBI so far in August.
Mon Jul 28 201423:24Cubs expected to keep Ruggiano, Coghlan
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs have "rebuffed inquiries" from the Yankees and others for Justin Ruggiano.
Heyman says the Cubs plan to hang on to both Ruggiano and Chris Coghlan, as they value their bats next year more than the second-tier prospect that they'd receive in return. Both Ruggiano and Coghland are under team control through 2016.

Fri Jul 11 201419:58Ruggiano plates two, including game-winner
Justin Ruggiano went 2-for-5 and drove home a pair of runs, including the game-winner in Friday's 5-4 triumph over the Braves.
Ruggiano delivered an RBI single in the third inning, then plated Arismendy Alcantara with an RBI knock in the ninth to deliver the Cubs the walk-off win. He has really picked up the pace offensively in recent weeks, and is now hitting .286/.358/.449 with 19 RBI on the season. His blend of power and speed make him a very attractive option as a fourth or fifth outfielder in deeper mixed leagues.
