Ruggiano agreed to a one-year, $2.505 million contract with the Mariners on Friday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

Ruggiano was traded to the Mariners from the Cubs in the offseason after serving in a reserve role i9n 2014. He finished the season with a solid .281/.337/.429 batting line with six home runs and 28 RBI, and figures to compete for the Mariners' starting right fielder job in 2015.

Ruggiano's move to the DL clears the way for the beginning of the Jorge Soler era, as the top prospect was recalled from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. The Cubs would clearly like to see Soler shine immediately in right field and lock down the positions for seasons to come, so barring a total collapse on the 21-year-old's part, it's unlikely that Ruggiano sees regular action once he returns from the DL.

Heyman says the Cubs plan to hang on to both Ruggiano and Chris Coghlan, as they value their bats next year more than the second-tier prospect that they'd receive in return. Both Ruggiano and Coghland are under team control through 2016.
