Rios (hand) is tentatively scheduled to resume full contact swings by next week, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Rios has been able to take light, dry swings for the first time since suffering a fractured hand, but remains several steps away from being game-ready. At the current pace, he's set to see his first game within roughly six weeks of enduring the injury. Once he is able to participate in a full game, he'll likely need a week or so of at-bats in the minors to get his timing and rhythm back. This would put him on track for a late-May or early-June return.

Rios has begun taking dry swings Thursday but there is still no timetable for his return, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
His original timetable would have him returning in late May and that still seems doable. For now Paulo Orlando and Jarrod Dyson will split time in the Royals' outfield.
Tue May 5 201517:18Rios (hand) still likely two weeks away from returning
Rios (hand) is still likely two weeks away from returning, MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanagan reports.
He will likely pick up a bat this week to test his hand with some swings, but a return to the Royals' lineup is still a couple weeks away. Paulo Orlando and Jarrod Dyson will continue to see extra time in the outfield while Rios is out.
Tue May 5 201517:16Rios (hand) about two weeks away from returning
Rios (hand) is about two weeks away from returning, but he has yet to grip a baseball, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Rios will likely head out on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Royals, making a return before mid-to-late May unlikely. He seems to be progressing as expected, given his initial timetable of three-to-six weeks.

Rios (hand) will start hand-strengthening exercises in about 10 days after he received encouraging news about his X-rays on Monday, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Rios is currently on the 15-day DL but he'll likely need another DL stint before his hand gets back to full functionality. As a result, Paulo Orlando is in line to spend some extra time in right field with the return date of Rios still uncertain.

Rios (hand) will get X-rays on Monday to determine whether or not he can begin strength exercises, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Rios continues to recover from a hand fracture dating back to mid-April. He's slated to miss 3-6 weeks due to the injury, and still remains weeks from a return even if the X-rays clear him to begin strength drills.
Tue Apr 14 201515:18Rios (hand) placed on 15-day DL on Tuesday
Rios (hand) was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old's deactivation was merely a formality, as the diagnosis of a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand carries with it an estimated recovery timetable of three-to-six weeks. Terrance Gore was pulled from his game at Double-A and will likely replace Rios on the roster, though Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando will likely see most of the time in right in his absence.
Tue Apr 14 201512:53Alex Rios: (Hand) GM Moore Gives Estimate Of 3-6 Weeks
Royals general manager Dayton Moore estimated that Rios (hand) will be out for three-to-six weeks with a fractured fifth metacarpal in the left hand, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
It would be pretty surprising to see Rios back with the Royals in just three weeks, but a return before the end of May is realistic. Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando are expected to get extra playing time in the outfield, and the Royals may opt to fill Rios' roster spot with a pitcher. The 34-year-old outfielder was off to an excellent start for his new team, going 9-for-28 (.321 BA) over the first seven games, with a home run, two stolen bases, four runs and eight RBI.
Tue Apr 14 201511:51Alex Rios: (Hand) Headed For DL With Fracture
Rios has been diagnosed with a fracture in his left hand, and he will be placed on the disabled list, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
While the Royals do not yet have a timetable for his return, Rios will likely be sidelined for longer than the minimum 15 days, as hand and wrist injuries are often tricky for batters. With Rios out for at least the next few weeks, Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando figure to get most of the playing time in right field.

The Royals were encouraged by strength tests on Rios's hand after Monday's win over the Twins, the KC Star reports.
Rios was set for an x-ray Monday night. The Royals are off Tuesday to give him some extra rest, so it's possible that he won't even miss a game.
Mon Apr 13 201519:14Alex Rios: Leaves Monday With Left Hand Contusion
Rios was removed from Monday's game against the Twins due to a left hand contusion, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
The Royals relayed that Rios was taken out of the game for precautionary purposes after he was struck on the hand by a J.R. Graham pitch, so it doesn't appear at the moment that the outfielder is at risk of missing much, if any time. The Royals held an 11-3 lead when Rios was hit, which would seem to support the team's assertion that his removal was precautionary. Rios, who is batting .321 on the season, contributed a run and an RBI before departing.
Mon Apr 6 201519:18Rios had big debut for Royals, going 3-4 with 3-run home run
Rios had a big debut for the Royals, going 3-for-4 with a 3-run home run.
The thumb injury that plagued Rios toward the end of spring training no longer seems like an issue. Last season with the Rangers Rios hit .311 with just four home runs.
Tue Mar 31 201519:20Rios (thumb) returned to lineup Sunday
Rios (thumb) returned to the lineup Sunday, FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Rios missed three Cactus League games due to a thumb injury, which was a bit concerning considering how his numbers dropped last season due to the ailment. The 34-year-old outfielder has now played in back-to-back games, however, and owns a .333/.375/.600 slash line over 45 spring at-bats. Although he expects to be the everyday right fielder in Kansas City, this report suggests Rios will bat in the bottom third of manager Ned Yost's lineups, which could result in a minor dip in his expected fantasy output. A hot start could change that fast, of course.
Fri Mar 27 201518:41Rios' thumb injury considered minor
Rios' thumb injury is considered minor, and he indicated he would be playing if it were the regular season, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Rios' thumb injury shouldn't hold him out too much longer, but he'll at least sit out Friday's spring training game for some added rest. His status for Opening Day doesn't appear to be in danger, however, which is good news for owners.
Thu Mar 26 201511:45Rios (thumb) will be held out at least two games
Rios (thumb) will be held out at least two games, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Rios has a jammed thumb, the same thumb that gave him trouble last season. Obviously, the Royals won't take any chances playing him in ultimately meaningless spring training games, and he'll be re-evaluated over the weekend.
Mon Feb 23 201518:05Rios resumed swinging bat without discomfort in January followin...
Rios resumed swinging the bat without discomfort in January following offseason surgery on his thumb, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports.
In addition to the thumb injury at the end of the year, an ankle injury may have limited his chances to steal bases, while toe and oblique injuries were also a factor for Rios last season. Moving into Kansas City, it's reasonable to think that his power rebound may be limited by his new home park, but a return to the 25-30 steal range is a possibility given the green-light tendencies of Royals manager Ned Yost.
Mon Dec 15 201420:36Alex Rios: Signs One-Year Deal With Royals
Rios signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Royals on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.
The 33-year-old spent last season with the Rangers, hitting .280/.311/.398 with 54 RBI, four home runs and 17 steals in 492 at-bats. While his power has tailed off in recent years, he's been extremely consistent from an average perspective, hitting between .278 and .280 in each of the last four seasons. Rios will likely be penciled in as the Royals' starting right fielder, as he joins an outfield rotation featuring Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain.
Sun Sep 21 201413:29Alex Rios: (Thumb) Won't Return In 2014
Rios (thumb) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2014 season, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Rios has been out of action since Sept. 4 due to complications involving a bruised thumb. Although he seemed to be nearing a return, there was little incentive to push him with the team far out of the playoff hunt. Instead, the Rangers will play it cautiously with their $68 million man, waiting until next spring to allow him to return to action. In the meantime, Dan Robertson and Jake Smolinski should continue to see extra reps during the final part of the season.

Rios (thumb) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Angels.
The Rangers have not ruled Rios out for the season, but his availability over the final week remains uncertain. After having his sutures removed last week, Rios said that he intends to wait until the incision fully heals before returning to the lineup.
Fri Sep 19 201419:00Rios (thumb) remains out of lineup Friday against Angels
Rios (thumb) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Angels.
Rios' status for a return this season remains uncertain, as he has been adamant that he will wait until the incision fully heals before rejoining the lineup. He will miss his 13th straight start Friday.
