Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles remain interested in re-signing Nate McLouth, and have spoken with his representatives in recent days.

The 32-year-old outfielder earned $2 million on a one-year deal in 2013, and is seeking a multi-year contract this winter. McLouth is coming off a rebound season where he slashed .258/.329/.399 with 12 homers, 36 RBI and 30 steals. Whether back in Baltimore or elsewhere, he should be able to land a two-year pact as the strong side of an outfield platoon.

McLouth may still be bothered by a sore right knee, but he's going to play through the discomfort as the O's try to lock up one of the American League Wild Card spots. McLouth is hitting .264/.335/.402 with 11 home runs and 30 stolen bases in 137 games this season.

McLouth indicated that his knee was a little sore, but that he believed he could return to the lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Red Sox in Boston. Fantasy owners may want to have a backup option available though, just in case the O's decide to give him a few extra days to rest.

While many questioned McLouth's production down the stretch last season, he's batting .288/.366/.409 with five home runs, 24 stolen bases, and 48 runs scored through 70 games this season.

McLouth was hitting .226/.344/.264 in 53 at-bats for the month entering the day. But even though he hasn't hit for average since April, he's still drawing walks and stealing bases. While McLouth, with 24, is seven steals behind Jacoby Ellsbury for the AL lead, he has eight more than anyone else in the circuit.

The 32-year-old is thriving atop Baltimore's potent lineup, posting a .285/.365/.437 slash line and leading the American League with 15 steals. He's also sixth with 34 runs scored. Between 2010-2012, McLouth often looked dead in the water, batting an anemic .221/.320/.346 line over 255 games. McLouth hasn't played this well since 2008, when he was a 26-year-old All-Star for the Pirates.

McLouth doubled and scored in a game-tying rally in the seventh and singled and scored when the Orioles finally went ahead in the 10th. The 32-year-old has thrived at the top of Baltimore's powerful lineup this season, scoring 28 runs in 31 games. Only Detroit's Austin Jackson (33 runs) has more.

While he can't maintain this pace all season, the O's should be doing everything they can to get him in the lineup while he's hot. He needs to be started in all fantasy formats at this point.

McLouth has reached base in 22 of his last 36 plate appearances. He entered the game fifth in the AL in on-base percentage (.434), sixth in walks (14), and is tied with Coco Crisp for second in the majors with eight stolen bases. McLouth will come back down to earth eventually, but he's off to an impressive start to the season. He finished 4-for-5 in the Orioles' extra-innings loss.

Not a bad way to fill up the box score. McLouth sparked a three-run third inning with an RBI single and later drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. Some dismissed him as a small sample size success story last season, but the 31-year-old is hitting .302 (19-for-63) in 19 games and is currently tied with Coco Crisp for second in the majors with seven stolen bases. He should be owned in deeper mixed leagues.

McLouth is without a homer in 58 at-bats and he's driven in just two runs, but he's done a terrific job getting on base with his .293 average and 13 walks. He's also up to five steals now.

Markakis has made three starts out of the leadoff spot this season, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter has seemingly settled on him as his primary No. 3 hitter. McLouth is hitting .263/.349/.342 with three doubles, one RBI, two stolen bases and six runs scored in 10 games this season and might be able to carve out some value in deeper mixed leagues.

We were hoping Nolan Reimold would overtake McLouth as the Orioles' primary left fielder, but with Wilson Betemit down, there's room for both in the lineup. McLouth ends the spring with a .320 average, four homers and three steals in 50 at-bats. We're not especially optimistic, but maybe he'll surprise again.
