RHP Francisco Rodriguez's role as Detroit's closer appears to be in jeopardy after he blew his fourth overall save and second straight against the Oakland A's Sunday. Rodriguez gave up three runs in the ninth inning, two on a two-run, walk-off homer by INF/DH Ryon Healy. "On Saturday, Rodriguez gave up a two-run, walk-off single to SS Adam Rosales with two outs in a 6-5 A's win "I don't recall going through such a bad moment as I'm going through right now," Rodriguez said. "Definitely I'm extremely disappointed with myself. I just want to extend my apologies to my team and the fans. Totally embarrassing. I'm more embarrassed than anything else. I just hope they don't give up [on me]. I don't want to be judged for the last 10 outings of my career for what I've done for 15 years. I've been through similar situations but not that rough. But I'm confident that I'm going to bounce back." Manager Brad Ausmus said he's "going to have to have a discussion" about the closer's role during Monday's off day. "He's not closing out games," Ausmus said of Rodriguez. "It's something he's done for decades. So I think it's pretty obvious it's not the same Frankie. I think he's searching for command more than anything, command on his pitches. He certainly has earned a degree of respect with his performance over the years, including what he did for us last year. It's not as simple as people like to think it."

Sat Apr 29 201704:28RHP Francisco Rodriguez in no danger of losing closer's role
RHP Francisco Rodriguez is in no danger of losing the closer's role, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Rodriguez gave up a go-ahead, ninth-inning run in a non-save situation on Thursday against Seattle. Rodriguez is 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA and opponents are batting .350 against him. He's converted six of eight save opportunities. "This guy did a pretty good job last year in a city that did have question marks in the closer's role for a long time," Ausmus said. "He was extremely good as our closer. I would be hesitant to rush to judgment on him. We know he can pitch better than he's pitched overall."

RHP Francisco Rodriguez wound up with a win instead of a save Friday in Detroit's 6-5 victory over Boston. Manager Brad Ausmus elected to ring Rodriguez in for a rare four-out save with two out in the eighth. But Rodriguez served up a three-run home run to cap a five-run Red Sox rally in the eighth that gave the visitors a temporary 5-4 lead. The Tigers got two in the bottom of the eighth and Rodriguez got three batters out of five out in the ninth to gain the win. "Truthfully, I didn't want to bring him in," Ausmus said. "I really didn't want to bring him in for a four-out save this early in the season. He hasn't pitched that much. I just felt like we had to. The wheels were coming off a little bit."

RHP Francisco Rodriguez got a milestone save Friday night, collecting the 422nd of his career to tie Billy Wagner for fifth on the all-time saves list. It was the third time he's been asked to get a four-out save, manager Brad Ausmus said. "You're not going to see me do it often," Ausmus said. "I think long-term K-Rod could handle it. But I don't think closers are built that way nowadays. I just think the pitch counts get high, the adrenalin see-saw is tough. A lot of closers pitch on adrenalin; they pitch on adrenalin for one inning. To ask them to come in for an out, then they sit down, then ask them to pump themselves up, it's tough to do sometimes." Rodriguez has 36 saves this season.

"I talked him to before the game," manager Brad Ausmus said, "and he said he was good. This guy is a consummate professional. Now that I've been around him, I wish that every single pitcher had his makeup and attitude. He's a warrior. It didn't work, but I got him out of there quick -- tried to save him a few bullets. But this guy is one of the most professional people I've been around. And he told me he was good to go. There's been one time all year where he told me he needed a day."
