Quintin Berry is in the Tigers' starting lineup for Saturday's ALDS Game 1 against the Athletics.

Berry will play left field and bat second. Behind him, the order goes Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Delmon Young, Andy Dirks, Jhonny Peralta, Alex Avila, and Omar Infante. Austin Jackson is starting in center and hitting leadoff.

Quintin Berry returned to action on Saturday September 22.

Berry made an early exit from Tuesday's game against the A's after landing hard on his right shoulder while diving for a ball in the outfield. He only suffered a bruise.

It's possible he did something to his shoulder. Berry was 2-for-4 with a couple RBI in the game before exiting. He was replaced in left field by Avisail Garcia.

Berry has certainly been better than Brennan Boesch this season, but since Boesch has heated up of late, Berry has been taking a seat with Andy Dirks back. Today's start came in center with Austin Jackson getting a day off. That won't happen often, so Berry should be regarded as a fourth outfielder right now.

The Tigers have yet to specifically address their plans, but that was the assumption."I'm pretty sure that when he gets back here, Dirks will jump right back into the role and I'll be here for whenever they need me," Berry said. It's likely that either Dirks, Berry or Brennan Boesch will be platooned against left-handed pitching, and Berry is under the impression that it will be him.

Quintin Berry went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI in Wednesday's win over the Indians.

All three hits were singles. Berry has proven surprisingly consistent since making his major-league debut on May 23, hitting .289/.373/.396 through 215 plate appearances, but the .267/.358/.338 career minor-league hitter still isn't a player you want to be putting much long-term faith in.

Berry delivered critical hits twice, with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings and a two-out RBI single in the 13th that should have been the winning run. Joaquin Benoit blew the save. Berry has been a pleasant surprise for the Tigers this season, hitting .297 with 17 RBI and 12 steals.

According to the Detroit Free Press, "someone besides Quintin Berry" might have to give up playing time when Andy Dirks (Achilles) returns from the disabled list.

Berry continues to earn the trust of manager Jim Leyland, and "might be moving into the Tigers' outfield on a long-term basis." Dirks has been sidelined for nearly a month due to right Achilles tendinitis, and has yet to be cleared for baseball activities.

Quintin Berry had an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Thursday.

Because of Berry's speed, the Cardinals opted to play the infield in rather than at double-play depth with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th. It proved to be a mistake. Berry hit what would have been a routine grounder and quite likely a double play had the infield been back. As it was, the ball snuck into center field to end the game. It was Berry's lone hit in five at-bats on the day.

Manager Jim Leyland confirmed Quintin Berry will be used in a bench role following the return of Austin Jackson from the disabled list.

''There's no question," Leyland said. "It is what it is. He's an extra player on the bench - maybe pinch-hitting to lead off an inning. Maybe pinch run.'' The Tigers will go with Jackson, Brennan Bosch, and Delmon Young as their starting outfield during interleague play. Andy Dirks (Achilles) is expected to come off the disabled list Friday.

The Detroit Free Press suggests the Tigers will consider making Quintin Berry their regular left fielder once Austin Jackson (abdomen) comes off the disabled list.

Berry is hitting .333 with six steals since being called up, and gives the Tigers an energy/speed dimension they currently lack. With Andy Dirks (neck) also on the DL, he'll likely have an edge over the struggling Don Kelly for a roster spot, and could see regular at-bats in left field.

Berry also picked up his fourth and fifth stolen bases of the season in the game. He's now hitting a blistering .333 (13-for-39) on the season, and is making a strong case to remain with the team when Austin Jackson returns from the DL. While he may not provide much power or long-term value, his blazing speed makes him well worth owning in most mixed leagues so long as he's receiving everyday at-bats out of the leadoff spot in the Tigers lineup.

Tigers purchased the contract of OF Quintin Berry from Triple-A Toledo.

He'll function as insurance in the outfield as Austin Jackson nurses an abdominal strain. Berry, 27, is hitting .270/.368/.321 with 19 stolen bases in 39 games at the Triple-A level this year and has stolen 261 bases in 692 minor league games. He could be worth a look in AL-only leagues if Jackson ends up going on the disabled list.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Tigers officials have raved about outfielder Quintin Berry.

Berry was signed to a minor league contract this offseason after batting .284 with a .383 on-base percentage and 42 stolen bases in 97 games last year in the Reds' minor league system. The 27-year-old won't crack the Tigers' Opening Day roster, but he could see time in the majors later this summer.
