INF Donovan Solano started at second base Sunday after signing a major league contract and being selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the game. He was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Solano hit .308 (8-for-26) in seven minor league playoff games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre en route to an International League championship.

The New York Yankees optioned outfielder Ben Gamel to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and reassigned several other players to their minor league camp.Reassigned to the minor league camp were right-handers Tyler Cloyd, Mark Montgomery and Vinnie Pestano, left-hander Richard Bleier and infielders Jonathan Diaz and Donovan Solano.

Solano was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Monday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

The move was procedural in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. No matter, Solano spent time between New Orleans and the Marlins in 2015, garnering just 90 at-bats in 55 games with the big club.

Solano went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Phillies.

Solano has been used sparingly during the month, but has hit safely in four out of the five September contests he has appeared in. Tuesday's performance also served as the first multi-hit outing for the 27-year-old in the 2015 season.

Solano was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.

Solano will receive a chance to polish his brutal 2015 stat line, currently standing at .156/.194/.219 in 67 plate appearances. He will likely occupy his usual utility infielder role, with some pinch hitting also in the cards now that rosters have expanded and benches have deepened.

Solano was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Monday.

Solano, who came off the paternity list last week, will head down to Triple-A for the second time this season to clear a spot for Tomas Telis, who was recalled Monday. Solano has struggled mightily in 46 appearances for the Marlins, going just 10-for-64 at the plate with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

Solano was reinstated from the paternity list Friday.

Solano should provide the Marlins with some extra depth around the infield now that he's returned to the roster, but he probably won't receive starts on a consistent basis.

Solano will be required to miss Tuesday's contest, but he could be back with the team as early as Wednesday. Per MLB rules, he's allowed to remain on the paternity list for up to three games.

Solano has been splitting time with Adeiny Hechavarria of late, and the Marlins will go with Hechavarria at shortstop Tuesday against Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Solano is hitting just .188 against righties this season, compared to .286 versus lefties, though the sample size remains small.

Solano is not in the lineup for Saturday's matchup with the Giants, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Solano got the start at second base in place of Dee Gordon (leg) on Friday, but with lefty Madison Baumgarner on the hill for San Francisco, the Marlins will go with Jeff Baker at second, as Gordon remains out. Solano is just 3-for-19 at the plate with one RBI this season.

Solano has secured a spot on the Marlins' opening day roster, MLB.com reports.

Solano has enjoyed a nice spring at the plate slashing .316/.381/.474 over 38 Grapefruit League at-bats heading into Monday. He'll see action as a utility infielder and right-handed bat off the bench.

Solano went 3-for-5 with a home run during Wednesday's Grapefruit League loss to the Tigers.

Solano continues to swing a hot stick as he vies for a backup job on Miami's Opening Day roster. He pushed his spring average up to .313 (10-for-32) following the three-hit assault while playing all over the infield during the exhibition season. The veteran infielder appears to have the inside track to one of the final spots on the Marlins' bench.

Solano has six hits in 23 Grapefruit League at-bats as he competes for one of the Marlins' final two bench spots in camp, MLB.com reports.

The Marlins' lack of a competent second baseman has given Solano plenty of opportunity to establish himself as a viable starter at the position in seasons past. Thanks to offseason addition of Dee Gordon, however, the 27-year-old Solano is now fighting to hold onto a bench job in camp. Reid Brignac and Scott Sizemore are in the mix with Solano to earn a spot as a utility infielder.

Solano went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in Thursday's win over the Phillies.

Following a season of uncertainty at the keystone for the Marlins, Solano has functioned as a regular for the final six weeks of the season. He doesn't bring a whole lot of offensive upside as indicated by the .249/.301/.317 slash he's put together in 293 at-bats, but provides a solid glove for the team. Expect Solano to compete with the defensively challenged Derek Dietrich for the starting job at second base next spring.

Solano is out of the lineup Friday.

It's just a standard day off for Solano, who has become the Marlins' everyday second baseman down the stretch. Enrique Hernandez will get the start at the keystone Friday.

Solano is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Solano has started every game for the Marlins since Aug. 25, but he will get a day off after going 1-for-15 over his last four games. Kike Hernandez will get the start at second base in Solano's place.
