Marte is expected to be recalled by the Tigers on Tuesday, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.

Marte has acquitted himself reasonably well both in Triple-A and in his brief exposure with the Tigers this year, but he's likely to see relatively minimal at-bats in a reserve role.

Marte was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, reports.

Marte has found his way into the starting lineup sporadically in August, going 6-for-24 at the plate for the month. With Drew VerHagen coming up from Triple-A, however, Marte will head back down to Toledo to clear a roster spot.

Marte continued his recent hot hitting Tuesday, doubling twice and driving in two runs.

Marte has now made four consecutive starts for the Tigers, over which time he has collected six hits, driven in a run on a solo home run, and scored a pair of runs himself. He's now hitting .289 in just 45 at-bats this season.

Marte cracked his third home run of the season Sunday in a loss to the Red Sox. He finished 1-for-4.

His success against left handers continues. He's actually 5-for-14 with two home runs, one double and three RBI in his last five games, but he needs to prove he can hit lefties and righties to be a truly valuable asset.

Marte will start at first base and bat eighth against the Red Sox on Saturday.

With left-hander Wade Miley on the mound for Boston, Marte slots in at first base in place of Alex Avila for Saturday's game. In limited time with the Tigers this season, he's 7-for-30 (.233) with two homers and six RBI over 14 games playing predominantly against southpaws.

Marte was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in a losing effort against the Orioles on Friday night.

He's attempting to win some regular playing time while Miguel Cabrera is on the disabled list, and a few games like this certainly would help. he has shown a little pop in the minors, and now has a pair of home runs with six RBI and a .250 average in a part time role since his recall in early July.

The Tigers called up Marte from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.

Marte will take the roster spot of Miguel Cabrera (calf), who was placed on the disabled list. Marte played almost exclusively at third base with Toledo and did not start a game at first base, so he is not a natural replacement for Cabrera. However, he did post a 1.113 OPS in 91 at-bats against left-handers this season, so he figures to see ample action against southpaws until Cabrera is ready to return.

Athletics acquired INF Jefry Marte from the Mets for OF Collin Cowgill.

Marte, 21, hit .251/.322/.366 in 513 plate appearances at the Double-A level last season. He's mostly just a flier to get Cowgill off their 40-man roster. Baseball America did not include him among the Mets' Top 30 prospects.
