Jay Bruce returned to the major leagues Saturday, making the New York Yankees' roster at the deadline for decisions on free agents who had gone to spring training with minor league contracts. Atlanta added third baseman Pablo Sandoval and told infielder Ehire Adrianza he will be put on the major league roster. The Chicago Cubs told infielder Eric Sogard he will be added. Detroit, having already told pitcher Julio Teheran he will be on the roster, informed pitcher Derek Holland he will be added and decided to pay a $100,000 retention bonus to keep pitcher Erasmo Ramirez. Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players who became free agents after the World Series and then went to spring training with minor league contracts had to be told by noon EDT Saturday that they would be added to the 40-man roster, paid the retention bonus or released. Released players can re-sign with the same team. Miami paid the retention bonus to catcher Sandy Leon, the only other player given the bonus.... [More]
Mon Mar 22 202116:53Rangers' Leclerc to miss extended time with elbow issue
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Texas Rangers have another potential long-term elbow issue with a late-inning reliever they hoped to count on in a rebuilding season. One-time closer José Leclerc has returned to Texas because of right elbow soreness, a setback that comes about two weeks after fellow right-handerc was diagnosed with a sprained elbow ligament. The Rangers have already indicated they plan to start the season with Hernandez on the 60-day injured list. General manager Chris Young said Monday the club won't know how long Leclerc will be out until after he is examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. The 22-year-old reported the soreness after a recent spring training outing. “Certainly not good news this morning,” Young said. Leclerc began the 2019 season as the Texas closer before he was demoted after a rough opening month. The Rangers didn't even get to find out if he was ready to resume the role last year because he made just two appearances before getting sidelined for the... [More]

Tue Feb 23 202113:34Ian Kennedy signs minor league contract with Rangers
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Right-hander Ian Kennedy has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, and will be in major league spring training with a chance to be compete for a spot in their bullpen. New Rangers general manager Chris Young, a former teammate of Kennedy's in Kansas City, said Tuesday the 36-year-old Kennedy brings a veteran presence after playing for four different teams over 14 big league seasons. “He has to earn the spot, and he’s perfectly comfortable that,” Young said. “Ian called me right after we finalized the deal and actually thanked me for not reaching out to him. He had a lot of teams, and personal relationships throughout the game, reaching out to him, and he said actually that played into it, the fact that I didn’t reach out to him personally.” Kennedy spent the past five seasons with Kansas City, where he made the transition from starter to reliever the past two years. He had his only 30 MLB saves in 2019, but was limited to one start and 14 relief appearances last season because of a left calf injury. Young and Kennedy were with the Royals together in 2016 and 2017. In 290 starts and 79 relief appearances, Kennedy is 97-105 with a 4.13 ERA. He had a career-high 21 wins in 2011 for Arizona. Kennedy began his big league career with the New York Yankees (2007-09), before pitching for the Diamondbacks (2010-13), San Diego (2013-15) and the Royals (2016-20). ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
