With rosters expanded, Cingrani will return to the big league club for the first time since late-July. The 26-year-old holds a 4.85 ERA across 26.0 innings for the Reds on the season, and he'll simply add depth to the bullpen down the stretch.

Cingrani (neck) was activated from the DL at Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

A neck issue kept Cingrani out for several weeks, but he's set to return to the hill Tuesday, starting in place of Robert Stephenson (forearm). Cingrani has enjoyed a good deal of success with Louisville this season (1.59 ERA), but he's struggled with the big club and it's uncertain what role he'll take on in September.

Cingrani was sent to Triple-A Louisville after Wednesday's start against the Cubs.

Cingrani pitched 2.2 innings and allowed six hits and five earned runs in the game. He struck out three batters and walked two. He left with a no-decision.

The 26-year-old lefty will make his first appearance since June 13 and his first start of the season for the big club, after battling back from a shoulder strain. Cingrani tossed 93 pitches over five scoreless innings in his final rehab start with Triple-A Louisville, and worked 14 scoreless frames overall while on his rehab assignment with an 18:6 K:BB. While the Reds have not announced plans for Cingrani beyond Wednesday, it seems entirely possible he could remain in the rotation if Johnny Cueto and/or Mike Leake are moved.

The Reds announced that Cingrani (shoulder) officially will return from the DL Wednesday to start the second game of their doubleheader against the Cubs.

It'll be interesting to see how often he uses his secondary pitches - that's always been the knock against him at the big league level. He faces a Cubs lineup that tends to strike out frequently, though he might be on a pitch-count in his first start back.

Reds manager Bryan Price acknowledged that Cingrani (shoulder) is a candidate to start one game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cubs, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Prior to Cingrani's rehab outing with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Price said the lefty will be "under consideration" if all goes well. It couldn't have gone much better, as Cingrani tossed five shutout innings with just four hits allowed and a 6:1 K:BB on 93 pitches (59 strikes).

The process of getting stretched back out into a starter has been going smoothly so far for Cingrani, as he's tossed seven shutout innings with just two hits allowed and a 9:4 K:BB in his two rehab starts for Louisville. He only threw 65 pitches in his outing Sunday, but it's reasonable to think Cingrani could be an option to start one game of the Reds' July 22 doubleheader against the Cubs if all goes well.
