RHP Casey Sadler was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Nov. 6. He underwent Tommy John surgery following the season, GM Neal Huntington told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Nov. 5. Sadler likely will miss the entire 2016 season after missing the second half of the 2015 season due to a right forearm strain.

Sadler (forearm) was recalled from Triple-A then subsequently placed on the major league 60-day DL on Tuesday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Gazette reports.

Sadler received a PRP injection at the end of July as he continues to work back from a strained forearm suffered back in June. He's still without a target return date, and it's possible that at this point he could remain out for the rest of the season. Recalling Sadler and placing him on the 60-day DL simply opens up a spot on the Pirates' 40-man roster.

Sadler had a platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right forearm/elbow and is expected to be able to return in 6-8 weeks, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The PRP injection helps with the healing of injuries to tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints, and luckily for Sadler, Tommy John surgery will likely not be required. He was originally placed on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Indianapolis, but will now be out for an extended amount of time. Regardless, Sadler is not expected to contribute for the Pirates in the second half of the regular season.

Sadler recently received a second opinion on his forearm injury, but the Pirates have declined to reveal the results, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Forearm issues occasionally have a tendency to morph into an elbow injury that requires Tommy John surgery, but the Pirates have been mum regarding that possibility for Sadler. The right-hander has been on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Indianapolis since June, and isn't expected to be a contributor for the Pirates in the second half, even if the second opinion contains positive news.

The Indianapolis Indians placed Sadler on the disabled list with a forearm strain, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Sadler has been considered an option for the Pirates' starting rotation. When he allowed 10 earned runs in his last start, it wasn't difficult to see that something was amiss with the righthander. For the season, Sadler holds a 6-5 record for Indy to go along with a 4.22 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. The organization gave no indication regarding how much time he might miss.

Sadler pitched well over five innings while picking up his first major league victory Sunday, but he was called up only to make a spot start while Francisco Liriano was on paternity leave, so he will head back to Indianapolis for the time being. Sadler will garner consideration next time the Pirates need to call up a starter from the minor league ranks.

His effort was night and day compared to his shaky 2014 debut (nine earned runs in 10.1 IP). Sadler was only making a spot start with Francisco Liriano away on paternity leave, but the Bucs will have no problem turning to him again after Sunday's showing. An effective sinking fastball kept the Brewers at bay for most of his five innings.

This will likely be a brief stay, as Francisco Liriano is on the paternity list, but will be activated in time for his Wednesday start. In the meantime, Sadler will offer some bullpen depth, but likely won't see any high-leverage opportunities.

Sadler allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings against the Twins on Friday.

Sadler didn't do himself any favors in his bid to slot high on Pittsburgh's list of potential in-season recalls. The 24-year-old debuted in 2014, giving up nine earned runs in 10.1 IP. He profiles as a ground-ball pitcher with no dominant pitch.

After Sadler was tagged for two runs over his 0.2 innings in relief Monday, the Pirates quickly dropped him from their bullpen, choosing to recall Brandon Cumpton from Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Sadler will likely move back to a rotation role at Triple-A.
