RHP Francisco Rodriguez blew a save opportunity in his first game with the Tigers, opening day, but made it 17 in a row since when he worked a three-batter ninth inning in Detroit's 5-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. There have been a few wobbles during his saves but the bottom line is no wins turned into losses. It's provided a major boost to Detroit's bullpen this season after several seasons of erratic closing situations.

Wed Jun 1 201614:23Tigers closer Rodriguez battled Zika in offseason
Detroit Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez has revealed he contracted the Zika virus this past offseason and is warning athletes going to the Rio Olympics about the dangers. The 34-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, said he was laid up for two weeks with severe bodyaches, joint pain and headaches among the symptoms. K-Rod spends his offseason back home in Venezuela."It wasn't a cold, trust me," Rodriguez told ESPN.com. "It wasn't a cold. A cold, you have a sneeze, have a headache, take a couple Tylenol and you're done. You don't have a cold for two weeks, you don't have a bodyache for two weeks, you don't have headaches, throwing up, weaknesses for two weeks."Zika, a mosquito-transmitted illness, leads to severe birth defects, including babies born with abnormally small heads. It can cause neurological problems for adults. There is no vaccine for the Zika virus.Several prominent athletes, including American tennis star Serena Williams, have voiced concerns over Olympic participation in... RHP Francisco Rodriguez collected the 400th save of his career Tuesday night, one of just six pitchers to reach that total. Rodriguez said he "never, when I came here to stay, when I came up to the big leagues," dreamed of reaching 400 saves. "I was just a little kid with a lot of dreams. But never, not even close in my mind (did I think of 400 saves). I don't play for numbers. I play this game because I love it. I had it in my veins. I know how to do well. It has nothing to do with records or anything like that." He has converted 14 saves in a row for Detroit after blowing one opening day.

RHP Francisco Rodriguez has converted his last 10 save opportunities, collecting saves on Sunday and Monday. He has now converted 38-of-40 save opportunities since 2015. Rodriguez, who was signed to a two-year, $13 million contract as a free agent, has provided some stability to an otherwise shaky bullpen. "He blew the first save on Opening Day, but he's done exactly what we wanted from him since then," manager Brad Ausmus said.

RHP Francisco Rodriguez was placed on the Family Medical Emergency List on Sunday. The team's closer must remain on the list at least three days, but no more than seven days. RHP Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 390th career save, tying Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley for sixth place on the major league all-time save list. Rodriguez, however, was not pleased after yielding back-to-back solo homers to Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez and walking two with two out before striking out Mike Moustakas to end the game. "Even though I still got the job done, it's quite embarrassing, simple as that," said Rodriguez, who labored through 29 pitches, only 13 strikes. "It's just giving way too much credit to hitters. Walking the tying and go-ahead runs is something you as closer cannot let happen. I have to pitch a lot better now, just get first-pitch strikes and put hitters away, stop messing around."

RHP Francisco Rodriguez, Detroit's closer, blew a relatively easy save chance. He entered the game to start the ninth with a 7-4 lead, but he gave up four hits, including three doubles, as Miami scored three runs to send the game to extra innings. It is going to take awhile to restore his 27.00 ERA to normalcy.

RHP closer Francisco Rodriguez was acquired by the Tigers in a trade with the Brewers. The Brewers will receive minor league infielder Javier Betancourt and a player to be named later. The Tigers also will receive a player to be named in addition to Rodriguez.Rodriguez, who turns 34 in January, will make $5.5 million in 2016 with a $6 million option for 2017 that includes a $4 million buyout.Rodriguez posted a 1-3 record, 2.21 ERA, 62 strikeouts and 38 saves over 60 games in 57 innings with the Brewers in 2015, while opponents batted just .189 against him. It marked his seventh season posting at least 35 saves. He ranked second in the National League with a 95.0 save percentage, while he was tied for fifth with 38 saves. He ranks fourth in the majors with 82 saves over the past two seasons.

Rodriguez allowed a hit and struck out two batters en route to his 36th save in a 4-3 win over the Cardinals on Friday.
The veteran has had quite the season for the Brewers, as he is 36-for-38 in save opportunities this year. He also holds an elite 2.30 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while striking out 59 batters in 54.2 innings. The closer has completely altered his arsenal by throwing less fastballs and more breaking balls and it's doing wonders for the 33-year-old.

Rodriguez (1-3) allowed a solo home run to blow a save, but picked up the win in a 6-4 win over the Pirates on Thursday. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Rodriguez was given a lead in the 12th inning, but allowed a leadoff homer to Gregory Polanco to blow his second save of the season. Even with the blown save, it's been a great season for the 33-year-old veteran. Rodriguez has completely changed his arsenal as his velocity has been down. He now relies on a change-up at a career-high rate and it's the pitch that has salvaged his career. Rodriguez has allowed a career-high in runs off his fastball and his change-up is one of the best in baseball, as that pitch is 16.8 runs above average compared to league average.

Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth inning Saturday, giving up two hits and striking out one, to notch his 34th save of the season.
He continues to do an excellent job as the Brewers closer, and Rodriguez now has a 2.40 ERA and 0.88 WHIP on the year with a 54:10 K:BB ratio in 48.2 innings.

Rodriguez pitched a clean ninth inning on Wednesday en route to his 33rd save in a 5-3 win over the Pirates.
It's a bit surprising to see Rodriguez have so many saves on such a bad team, but it's quietly been a great year for the veteran. His career appeared to be over two years ago, but he's done a nice job of reviving his career by altering his stuff. Rodriguez is using his fastball at a career-low rate (46-percent) and is using his change-up at a career-high rate (43-percent). Players who age and lose their velocity need to change the way that they pitch and Rodriguez has done a fantastic job of that late in his career.

Rodriguez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock down his 31st save of the season in Sunday's win over the Reds.
Rodriguez needed only eight pitches to retire the side, amounting to a swift rebound after he was blasted for four runs (three earned) the previous night in his first blown save of the season. Though his fastball velocity has typically sat around the high-80s or low-90s in his age-33 season, Rodriguez has found late-career success by reining in the walks and minimizing the damage on fly balls. After giving up a career-high 14 homers last season, Rodriguez has surrendered only five long balls over 46.1 innings in 2015.

Rodriguez (0-3) took the loss in a 12-9 defeat to the Reds on Saturday, suffering first blown save of the season after surrendering four hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk in 0.2 innings. He struck out a batter.
It is likely just a hiccup for the dominant K-Rod, who had been a perfect 30-for-30 in save opportunities on the season before Saturday night. Saturday's downfall came on a 2-1 mistake that Joey Votto muscled into the left-field bleachers after Jay Bruce had led off the ninth with a single. Although he now has surrendered a total of eight earned runs in August, K-Rod remains the unquestioned ace of the Brew Crew's bullpen.

Rodriguez was pulled back on waivers and will remain with the Brewers for the remainder of the season, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
The Mets were considered candidates to go after Rodriguez before the waiver trade deadline, but the Brewers took him off waivers and will retain the veteran closer for the remainder of the year.
