Fri Nov 9 201819:44Twins' Joe Mauer retiring after 15 seasons
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer is retiring after 15 major league seasons, six All-Star games, three Gold Glove awards, three batting titles and 2,123 career hits, all with his hometown Minnesota Twins."Thank you, Minnesota Twins, and thank you, fans, for making my career as special and memorable as it was," Mauer wrote in a full-page ad that will run Sunday in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Because of you I can leave the game I love with a full and grateful heart."Mauer's eight-year, $184 million contract expired the day after the World Series ended, creating a natural parting from the game he grew up with in St. Paul, less than 10 miles from the downtown Minneapolis ballparks he called home with the Twins."The decision came down to my health and my family," Mauer wrote. "The risk of a concussion is always there, and I was reminded of that this season when I missed 30 games as a result of diving for a foul ball. That's all it took this time around and it was all... Tue Oct 9 201819:20Sano starting critical offseason of conditioning for Twins
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Miguel Sano has begun a critical offseason in his so-far-frustrating career with the Minnesota Twins, who plan to keep close tabs on the slugging third baseman frequently waylaid by injuries."The plan is to have very consistent touch points," general manager Thad Levine said, "both by phone and quite frankly face to face."Sano left Minnesota last week for his native Dominican Republic, where he was involved in an incident with police outside a nightclub that left an officer with a broken leg. The incident was deemed an accident and no criminal charges were brought. Last winter, Sano was accused of assaulting a woman but Major League Baseball did not punish him after an investigation yielded insufficient evidence. For now, though, the focus is on Sano's physical condition. After losing the last six weeks of the 2017 season due to a lower left leg injury that required surgery, Sano missed time in May with a left hamstring injury. Then a hard slide in September resulted in... [More]
Mon Oct 1 201818:30As Mauer mulls retirement, Twins bound for big roster change
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The final afternoon of the regular season for the Minnesota Twins was filled with cheers, chills and even a few tears as a lively crowd at Target Field was treated to a meaningful and memorable game .Too bad for the Twins and their fans the playoffs weren't at stake. They had to settle for a Joe Mauer tribute , the probable end to a 15-year major league career for the smooth-swinging, six-time All-Star and one of the best athletes the state has ever produced. The first big news of what will be a busy fall and winter in Minnesota will likely be the announcement from Mauer about whether he will continue his career at age 35. The sentimental scene on Sunday as the Twins beat Chicago to finish with a season-best sixth straight win left little doubt he's done."Either way, it's a good decision, you know? I can either play, or go home and be with my girls," Mauer said before hitting a double and donning the catcher's gear one last time for a ninth-inning curtain call. The end of... [More]

Fri Sep 28 201823:29Is this the end? Mauer savors last Twins series of season
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — As Joe Mauer drove to the ballpark for a doubleheader to begin the last series of the season for the Minnesota Twins, the finality of the weekend dawned on him a little deeper than usual. These games against the Chicago White Sox aren't necessarily going to be the last of Mauer's 15-year career, but there's no guarantee they won't be, either. Mauer will wait until the offseason, in consultation with his family, to decide whether or not to retire at age 35. The three-time American League batting champion and six-time All-Star will be a free agent, his eight-year $184 million contract set to expire, but he has no interest in playing outside of his home state."The end of the season sneaks up on you. Here we are, the last weekend," Mauer said before the Twins swept the doubleheader from the White Sox on Friday. "Just trying to enjoy it."By going 2 for 4 in each of the two games, Mauer stretched his on-base streak to 14 straight starts. He's batting .362 (21 for 58) during... [More]
