Oakland A's outfielder Billy Burns was diagnosed with a testicular contusion and is doubtful to play Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, according to MLB.com. The injury occurred when Burns had a foul ball bounce up and hit him in the groin Friday. He stayed in the game after the incident and had an RBI groundout in the at-bat, but he was then lifted an inning later when he felt nauseous. Burns has been excellent this season, his first in the majors, as he leads all rookies in hits (92), multi-hit games (29) and stolen bases (20). He is now hitting .308 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 70 games, and while the injury appeared painful when it occurred, the team is not expecting Burns to be sidelined for a considerable amount of time. If he does not play Saturday, his next opportunities will come Sunday and Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants.

If you're holding your breath waiting for Burns to stop hitting, you may as well gulp some fresh air now, as he's showing no signs of slowing down. The speedster's high-contact approach has yielded huge gains for fantasy owners in batting average and steals, as he's clearly learned to maximize his tools.

Burns had some hip flexor soreness that caused him to miss games Friday and Saturday. Burns has continued to find a way to get hits, many of the infield variety and is now hitting .324 on the season. He did not attempt any stolen bases last week, perhaps a sign the hip was affecting him.

Burns had played 34 games in a row before being held out of the lineup Friday. Burns continued to slash and dash on Saturday, going 2-for-5 with his 15th stolen base in 45 games.
That's a full-season pace for 54 steals, although spending the first month of the season in Nashville will likely keep Burns from reaching that impressive total unless he can ramp up his thievery. It remains to be seen whether he can maintain his batting average and sky-high BABIP over the long haul in the majors, but he twice topped a .350 BABIP in full minor league seasons and had a .379 mark at Triple-A when he was called up in May, so it's not out of the question. Whatever the future holds for Burns, right now he's one of the most dynamic leadoff men in the league.
