Wed Apr 7 202114:33James Paxton heads to IL as Mariners await MRI results
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed left-handed starter James Paxton on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a forearm strain in his pitching arm. Seattle also put starting left fielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain he suffered while making a diving catch in Tuesday’s loss to the Chicago White Sox. Manager Scott Servais said both players underwent MRIs on Wednesday morning and the team was still awaiting results. Paxton left in the second inning after just 24 pitches, grimacing after throwing a 92 mph fastball to Andrew Vaughn. It was the first start of his second stint with Seattle. “Leaving last night he was a little bit more optimistic that it wasn’t anything too serious. I know he woke up today and it’s stiff as expected,” Servais said of Paxton. “Really, it’s hard to speculate until you know exactly what’s going on there and the only way you’re going to know is you get the reading on the MRI.” Seattle recalled outfielder Braden Bishop and right-hander... Fri Apr 2 202102:57Segura's hit in 10th lifts Phillies over Braves in opener
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jean Segura hit an RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in their season opener Thursday. After Nate Jones (0-1) intentionally walked Did Gregorius, Segura hit a bouncer down the third-base line to score Bryce Harper, who began the inning as the automatic runner at second base and advanced to third on a grounder. In the top of the 10th, center fielder Roman Quinn made a perfect throw to the plate to retire Ozzie Albies, who was trying to score on Marcell Ozuna’s fly ball. Catcher J.T. Realmuto caught the ball and slid in front of the plate in one slick motion, successfully blocking Albies’ path. Phillies ace Aaron Nola was one strike away from tossing seven scoreless innings before pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval ripped an 0-2 pitch into the second deck in right field to tie it at 2. The Phillies got 3 1/3 scoreless innings from four relievers, with Connor Brogdon (1-0) working the 10th. They had the worst... [More]
Tue Mar 9 202116:37Taylor Trammell may end up being Mariners' left fielder
For all the attention on the Seattle Mariners' decision-making surrounding top prospect Jarred Kelenic, there is another young outfielder who seems more likely to be on the club’s opening day roster. Taylor Trammell has never played above Double-A. But with Kelenic sidelined by a knee injury and a couple of other outfielders struggling early in spring training, Trammell could have a shot at being on the field when the Mariners open the season on April 1 against San Francisco. “I think he fits in very well with our group,” manager Scott Servais said. “He’s comfortable. He now has been around us long enough he understands our language and our verbiage and what we value. He fits right in with that.” The 23-year-old Trammell is on the third organization of his career despite regularly being regarded as one of the top 100 prospects in baseball. He was one of the main pieces when Seattle traded Austin Nola and a pair of relievers to the San Diego Padres last season as the Mariners continued to... [More]
Tue Sep 22 202018:44Mariners' Moore placed on concussion list, out for season
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners second baseman Dylan Moore’s season is over after he was placed on the seven-day concussion list Tuesday. Moore was hit in the head for the second time in a week, taking a 92 mph fastball from Houston Astros reliever Brandon Bielak off the helmet in a 6-1 win over Houston on Monday night. Moore remained in the game, but began to feel effects afterward, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Moore also briefly stayed in the game after taking a 99 mph pitch to the head from San Francisco Giants reliever Sam Coonrod last Wednesday. He was pulled before taking the field the next inning. Moore returned to the lineup the next day. Ty France will take Moore’s place at second base and the Mariners called up outfielder Jake Fraley to take his roster spot against the Astros on Tuesday night. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Thu Jul 23 202017:03Mariners sign Shaw, place Murphy on IL ahead of opener
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners signed right-handed pitcher Brian Shaw and placed catcher Tom Murphy on the 10-day injured list on Thursday in setting their 30-man roster for the start of the regular season. Shaw was released by the Colorado Rockies earlier this week. The veteran made 70 appearances with a 5.38 ERA last season with Colorado.Seattle’s bullpen is one of its major concerns going into the 60-game season, and the Mariners will start the season without veteran Yoshihisa Hirano, who is also on the injured list after having tested positive for COVID-19 last month. Seattle will owe Shaw $208,704 of his prorated salary of $3,333,333, with the Rockies responsible for the rest. Murphy was diagnosed with a broken bone in his left foot on Wednesday, leaving the Mariners with only Austin Nola and Joe Hudson as their catchers going into the regular season. Seattle also optioned outfielder Jake Fraley to its taxi squad, leaving one of the outfield positions a question mark going into the opener. Seattle will likely use a mix of Tim Lopes, José Marmolejos, Dylan Moore and Dee Gordon with Mallex Smith and Kyle Lewis the other outfield starters. ___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
