Bruce Chen spun 6 2/3 frames on one-run ball, allowing only four hits, in Sunday's victory against the White Sox.
The left-hander struck out four and walked three in improving to 9-4. It was a nice season finale outing to cap a successful year for Chen, who posted a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 121 innings.

Wed Sep 25 201300:57Chen blasted for four runs in loss to Seattle
Bruce Chen was knocked around in loss on Tuesday against the Mariners, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings.
The left-hander struck out five and walked three. Chen wasn't sharp, but Kansas City's offense was shut out, so it's hard to blame him for this disappointing loss. The Royals are now four games back in the Wild Card race, which means an official elimination from playoff contention could happen as soon as Wednesday. Chen is scheduled to take the ball in the season finale on Sunday against the White Sox.

Wed Sep 18 201323:22Bruce Chen gets eighth win against Indians
Bruce Chen allowed two runs over five innings in a win over the Indians on Wednesday.
It was a perfectly Bruce Chen start, as he allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out just one batter. Whatever it is, it's effective -- he moved to 8-3 with a 3.13 ERA this year. Unfortunately his game isn't much suited for fantasy purposes. He'll start at the Mariners next week.

Fri Sep 13 201321:56Bruce Chen knocked around in loss to Tigers
Bruce Chen was knocked around in Friday's loss to the Tigers, surrendering six runs on seven hits over his 4 1/3 innings of work.
Chen walked a pair and struck out three on the night. Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter each drove in three runs off the veteran southpaw, with Fielder's knocking a two-run homer over the wall in right in the fourth inning. After a strong start to the season, the regression monster has hit Chen hard as of late, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over his last six starts. He'll look to get back on track when he takes on the Indians at home on Wednesday.

Sun Sep 8 201317:59Chen fires seven innings of two-run ball
Bruce Chen fired seven innings of two-run ball to beat Detroit on Sunday.
He struck out four, walked none and yielded five hits. The southpaw is 2-0 over his last three starts and gave up just five runs in those 18 2/3 innings. Chen will find it difficult to sustain that momentum on Saturday in Detroit.

Tue Sep 3 201323:42Chen allows two runs, settles for no-decision
Bruce Chen allowed two runs over six innings but took a no-decision against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Chen deserved a better fate, as he exited with the lead only to see the Mariners tie the game in the next inning. The only blemish against him was a Kyle Seager two-run homer, as he gave up just six hits on the evening. The lefty remains 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA through 93 innings this season. His challenge gets tougher Sunday when he takes on the division-leading Tigers.

Thu Aug 29 201318:19Bruce Chen holds Twins in check
Bruce Chen limited the Twins to just one run over 5 2/3 innings in Thursday's 3-1 victory.
Chen yielded five hits and a walk while recording three strikeouts. With his pitch count up to 93 and him having served up a homer than inning, Royals manager Ned Yost decided to pull the lefty before he finished the sixth. It means he doesn't get a quality start, but it was a nice rebound effort after Chen was knocked around the last two times out. He'll try to keep it going next week at home against the Mariners.

Sat Aug 24 201300:38Chen gives up seven runs against Nationals
Bruce Chen struggled in Friday's loss to the Nationals, allowing seven runs on six hits and five walks over 3 2/3 innings.
Chen allowed one run in the third inning and was chased in a seven-run fourth. After allowing just four runs (0.93 ERA) over his first six starts in the rotation, the veteran left-hander has allowed 13 runs in his last two starts. It was fun while it lasted.

Sun Aug 18 201315:58Chen rocked for six runs in loss to Tigers
Bruce Chen was rocked for six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Tigers on Sunday.
He walked one and struck out one. Believe it or not, the setback was Chen's first loss of the season, dropping him to 5-1. Coming in, the southpaw hadn't allowed a run over his last two starts spanning 14 2/3 innings and had rattled off six straight quality starts. Chen's peripherals suggest that his 2.20 ERA will continue to rapidly rise. He'll try to fight off another attack from the colossus named Regression on Saturday against the Nationals in Kansas City.

Wed Aug 14 201300:18Chen dominates Marlins over seven scoreless
Bruce Chen held the Marlins scoreless over seven innings but failed to factor in the decision on Tuesday.
Bruce Chen? Bruce Chen. The southpaw hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts spanning 14 2/3 innings and has rattled off six straight quality starts. He went pitch-for-pitch with Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez, finishing with three hits and three walks allowed. Chen now has a ridiculous 1.62 ERA through 72 1/3 innings. He'll face the tough Tigers in Detroit on Sunday.

Thu Aug 8 201323:10Bruce Chen shuts down Red Sox in victory
Bruce Chen shut out the Red Sox for 7 2/3 innings Thursday and improved to 5-0 on the season.
Of course he did. Chen has allowed just four runs in 31 2/3 innings since replacing Luis Mendoza in the rotation last month, and he's been a big part of the Royals' surge the last few weeks. He'll resume giving up homers at some point, though.

Sat Aug 3 201317:39Chen solid in no-decision against Mets
Bruce Chen was handed a no-decision Saturday after limiting the Mets to just one run over six innings.
Chen struck out a season-high eight batters, which is one shy of his career best. The only damage was a solo homer by Daniel Murphy in the first inning. The veteran southpaw was in line for the win before Aaron Crow gave up a two-run single in the eighth inning. Chen now has a 1.50 ERA in four starts since rejoining the Royals' rotation. We wouldn't buy in mixed fantasy leagues, especially with a start against the Red Sox coming up next week.

Sun Jul 28 201318:28Chen surrenders 2 runs over 6 innings in win
Bruce Chen surrendered two runs on three hits over six innings in the Royals' 4-2 win over the White Sox on Sunday.
He struck out five and walked two in the no-decision. The southpaw has now allowed seven hits and three runs over his last three starts, covering 18 innings and dating back to before the All-Star break. Chen owns an impressive 2.09 ERA in 51 2/3 innings overall this year. He's a streamer option in mixed leagues next weekend when he takes on the Mets in New York.

Wed Jul 24 201300:28Chen baffles Orioles, Royals pull out 4-3 win
Bruce Chen allowed one run over six innings in the Royals' 4-3 win over the Orioles on Tuesday.
Chen was stellar, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out four. His only blemish was a solo home run hit by Manny Machado. The southpaw has now allowed four hits and one run over his last 12 innings dating back to before the All-Star break, and he's got an impressive 1.97 ERA in 45 2/3 innings overall this year. He'll try to keep rolling when he takes on the White Sox in Chicago on Sunday.

Fri Jul 12 201322:16Bruce Chen terrific in first start of season
Bruce Chen was terrific in his first start of the 2013 season on Friday, limiting the Indians to just one hit and a walk over six scoreless innings.
The veteran southpaw also struck out four on the night. Unfortunately for him, the Royals' offense couldn't generate any offense to get him a victory. Through 39 2/3 innings on the season, he now owns a 2.04 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 28/14 K/BB ratio. While the numbers look nice from a distance, he owns a career 4.55 ERA and 1.39 WHIP and shouldn't be counted on for fantasy purposes.

Mon Jul 8 201323:18Bruce Chen moving into rotation
Bruce Chen will replace Luis Mendoza in the Royals' rotation.
Chen will make his first start of the season on Friday in Cleveland. The left-hander has posted a 2.41 ERA in long relief this season, though it's also come along with a 1.46 WHIP. He's probably a better option than Mendoza but should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Fri May 3 201312:00Bruce Chen looking good in bullpen
Bruce Chen hasn't allowed an earned run and holds an 11/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 relief innings this season.
Meanwhile, Luis Mendoza has a 7.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP and Wade Davis has a 5.55 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. The Royals could look to change things up at the back-end of the rotation if Mendoza and Davis don't pick it up, as both Chen and Luke Hochever have pitched very well.

Tue Mar 26 201311:32Chen to pitch out of bullpen with Royals
Bruce Chen will start the season pitching out of the bullpen.
Chen lost out to Luis Mendoza for the final spot in the starting rotation. The veteran left-hander had minimal fantasy value as a starter and he'll be rendered irrelevant out of the bullpen.

Sat Mar 16 201319:13Bruce Chen shelled in spring outing vs. Cubs
Bruce Chen was hammered for seven runs -- six earned -- in five innings Saturday against the Cubs.
Chen yielded nine hits -- five of which were homers -- and also issued a walk. He now has a 7.90 ERA in the Cactus League and seems to be falling behind in the race for the final spot in the Kansas City starting rotation.

Wed Mar 13 201312:07Royals have four names compete for rotation
Bruce Chen, Will Smith, Luis Mendoza and Yordano Ventura will be considered for the fifth spot in the Royals' starting rotation.
Luke Hochevar was eliminated from the field Wednesday when Royals manager Ned Yost announced that he was being moved to the bullpen. Chen is the likely favorite in part because he's due to make $4.5 million this year, but the veteran left-hander is an uninspiring option in fantasy leagues.
