Bruce Chen allowed one earned run over three innings Tuesday in the Royals' 8-2 defeat of the A's.
Chen issued no walks and struck out two. He has agreed to remain in Royals camp all spring rather than pitch for Panama or China in the WBC, and will hope to claim the final spot in the Kansas City rotation. Chen posted a 5.07 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 140/47 K/BB ratio across 191 2/3 innings last year.

Tue Feb 12 201312:36Bruce Chen won't pitch for China in WBC
Bruce Chen will not pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic.
Chen pitched for Panama during the 2009 WBC, but he wanted to pitch for China this time around because he's of Chinese descent. However, it was just taking too long for him to be certified to pitch for China, so he has decided not to participate.

Sun Jan 13 201314:39Bruce Chen to pitch for China in WBC
Bruce Chen will pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic.
Chen is of Chinese descent but was born in Panama and played for them during the 2009 WBC, pitching well enough to earn a deal with the Royals. The left-hander will compete for the Royals' No. 5 starter job in 2013.

Mon Oct 1 201223:37Bruce Chen lit up by Tigers
Bruce Chen surrendered six runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Tigers.
A David Lough error allowed Chen to lower his ERA to an ugly 5.07, but he obviously wasn't sharp in this one. He finishes the year having served up 33 home runs, which is currently good for the fourth-highest total in the league. Chen will make $4.5 million in his final year with the Royals next year.

Tue Sep 25 201221:22Bruce Chen decent in loss to Tigers
Bruce Chen pitched decently in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers, allowing just two runs on over 6 2/3 innings.
He walked three while striking out five. After tallying two runs in the first, it looked like the Tigers had Chen on the ropes in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and had the heart of the order coming up, but Chen induced a weak fly ball from Omar Infante then impressively punched out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. He'll head into his season finale against these same Tigers at home on Monday with an 11-13 record and 5.13 ERA

Wed Sep 19 201223:59Bruce Chen gets the best of White Sox
Bruce Chen held the White Sox to five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings of Wednesday's 3-0 victory.
Chen struck out four and walked three in improving to 11-12. The scoreless outing was just Chen's fourth of the season, and comes after he allowed at least five runs in three consecutive starts coming into this evening. Under contract for $4.5 million in 2012, Chen is the owner of a 5.22 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 132/43 K/BB ratio through 179 1/3 innings this season.

Sat Sep 8 201218:59Bruce Chen awful again in loss to White Sox
Bruce Chen turned in another awful performance in Saturday's loss to the White Sox, allowing five runs on six hits over his six innings.
Chen walked two and struck out six on the afternoon. Most of the damage stemmed from his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as Dayan Viciedo, Tyler Flowers and Paul Konerko each blasted homers in the game. With the poor outing, Chen falls to 10-12 on the season with an abysmal 5.36 ERA. He'll attempt to get back in the win column when he takes on the Angels at home on Friday.

Wed Aug 29 201223:19Bruce Chen goes eight in win
Bruce Chen baffled the Tigers in Wednesday's 1-0 victory, allowing just five baserunners in eight scoreless frames.
Chen struck out four, walked one and allowed four hits in improving to 10-10 on the season. The eight-inning start was his first of the year, while the scoreless outing was only his third. In the first year of a two-year deal, Chen is the owner of a 5.13 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 112/36 K/BB ratio through 154 1/3 frames. He'll get the Rangers at home on Monday. Keep him benched for that one.

Sun Aug 12 201217:03Bruce Chen still isn't quality
Bruce Chen allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and two home runs in 5 1/3 innings of Sunday's loss to the Orioles.
Chen served up bombs to Nick Markakis and rookie Manny Machado in falling to 8-10. He's now been quality in only two of his seven starts since the All-Star break. Chen will bring a 5.56 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 95/32 K/BB ratio into his Saturday start agains the White Sox at home.

Sun Jul 29 201202:15Bruce Chen has quality start in loss to M's
Bruce Chen turned in a rare quality start in Saturday's loss to the Mariners, surrendering three runs on seven hits over his six frames.
Chen fanned five and walked just one on the evening. He had been absolutely brutal over his previous four starts, so this was a much welcomed improvement from the veteran left-hander. All of the damage came in the third inning, where Jesus Montero belted a two-run homer and Miguel Olivo followed with an RBI single later in the inning. Chen will take a 7-9 record and uninspiring 5.49 ERA into Friday's home start against the Rangers.

Wed Jul 18 201223:28Bruce Chen better, but still struggles vs M's
Bruce Chen improved upon his previous three outings on Wednesday but still struggled against the Mariners, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.
The positive thing to take away from this performance is that he racked up six strikeouts without walking a batter. Still, Chen remains far too hittable to have sustained success in a major-league rotation, and the Royals would probably be better-served looking for a better alternative. He'll take a 7-8 record and 5.57 ERA into Anaheim, where he'll battle the Angels on Monday.

Sat Jul 14 201201:37Bruce Chen struggles again in no-decision
Bruce Chen struggled in a no-decision against the White Sox on Friday, allowing six runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.
The White Sox jumped all over Chen in the first inning, with Adam Dunn and Alex Rios each blasting home runs. He then settled in nicely before surrendering a three-run bomb to Dayan Viciedo in the fifth inning. Chen has now allowed six earned runs in each of his last three starts, now sporting an unremarkable 5.50 ERA on the season. He shouldn't be owned or started in any fantasy formats for his next start against the Mariners at home on Wednesday.

Sat Jul 7 201219:28Bruce Chen struggles again in loss to Tigers
Bruce Chen's struggles continued in Saturday's loss to the Tigers, as he surrendered six runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.
Chen struck out three and walked two in the abbreviated outing. Prince Fielder's two-run shot got the scoring started in the first inning, then the Tigers added three in the second and another in the fourth before Chen was finally lifted. It was the third time in his last five outings that Chen has allowed six or more earned runs. He'll look to improve on his 7-8 record and inflated 5.22 ERA in the second half of the season.

Sun Jul 1 201217:40Bruce Chen serves up three HRs in loss
Bruce Chen was lousy in Sunday's loss to the Twins, allowing six runs on six hits and three home runs in just 5 2/3 innings.
He struck out five and walked one in falling to 7-7. He served up a pair of solo home runs to Trevor Plouffe. Coming off a June where he posted a 3.76 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 26 1/3 innings, Chen will get the Tigers in Detroit on Friday.

Tue Jun 26 201222:53Chen 'cuffs Rays in Tuesday's win in KC
Bruce Chen yielded two runs (one earned) over seven innings Tuesday in a victory over the Rays.
He struck out five and gave up five hits and a walk. Chen's nit-picking style of pitching usually doesn't cut it against aggressive offenses, but he effectively attacked the zone more in this game. Now 7-6 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, Chen is playable in AL-only formats but shouldn't be used in mixed leagues.

Sat Jun 16 201217:58Bruce Chen hammered by Cardinals
Bruce Chen turned in an ugly performance against the Cardinals on Saturday, getting hammered for six runs on seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings of work.
Chen didn't walk or strike out a batter in the game. Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina each blasted two-run homers in the second inning, putting Chen in a big hole early on. As most advanced metrics astutely point out, Chen just simply isn't as good of a pitcher as his numbers indicated a season ago, and this regression should have been expected. His nit-picking style of pitching simply doesn't cut it if opposing offenses aren't being aggressive and expanding the zone, and the Cardinals punished him in this one. With the loss, Chen's ERA moves up to a very unremarkable 5.05. He shouldn't be a consideration in all but the deepest of AL-only leagues at this point for his next outing against these same Cardinals at home on Friday.

Sun Jun 10 201216:48Bruce Chen goes five innings in loss
Bruce Chen allowed three runs on four hits in five innings of Sunday's loss to the Pirates.
He struck out five and walked one in falling to 5-6. Chen settled down after becoming Andrew McCutchen's latest victim on a two-run homer in the first, but was pinch hit for by Clint Robinson in the sixth after throwing just 79 pitches. Chen has failed to record more than 15 outs in three of his past four outings, and will bring a 4.44 ERA into his start against the Cardinals next weekend.

Mon May 14 201223:11Chen holds down mighty Rangers
Bruce Chen held down the mighty Rangers offense Monday, limiting them to just one run on five hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings in the 3-1 victory.
It's a borderline shocking result from a guy that had given up 15 runs over his last three starts. Chen served up a solo homer to Nelson Cruz in the fourth, but that's all the Rangers could muster against the soft-tossing southpaw. Though his ERA remains high at 4.34, Chen sports a 1.15 WHIP due to his stinginess with walks thus far. He'll get the D'Backs Saturday.

Wed May 9 201223:36Chen bests Red Sox for first win of season
Bruce Chen held the Red Sox in check in Wednesday's 4-3 win, allowing three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Chen struck out five and walked none in picking up his first win of the season. He had allowed six runs in back-to-back starts coming into this evening. Typically a solid bet for a quality start, Chen will bring a 4.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 27/7 K/BB ratio into his Tuesday start in Texas. He'll be best left on the bench for that one.

Fri May 4 201222:46Chen roughed up in loss to Yankees
Bruce Chen was hit hard for the second consecutive outing on Friday, allowing six runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings against the Yankees.
Chen struck out four and walked one in the game. He doesn't possess overpowering stuff and needs to rely on his pinpoint control to have success. When he catches too much of the plate, as he did on Friday, the results aren't pretty. Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter each took Chen deep on the night. He'll look to rebound from this disaster and get back on track when he faces the Red Sox next week.
