Tue Aug 20 201911:15Home run robbers get praise - and swag for spectacular plays
It was late in the 2015 season when Baltimore's Manny Machado smoked a pitch from Tampa Bay's Chris Archer into center field at Camden Yards.Kevin Kiermaier sprinted to the wall, turned and leaped high above it before reaching back and snatching the ball . He banged off the wall and landed on his feet with the ball firmly planted in his glove for the out.The play sent a dejected Machado back to the dugout and left a stunned Archer simply mouthing, "Wow."Archer, now with Pittsburgh, was so grateful for Kiermaier's extraordinary effort that he searched for a fitting way to thank his center fielder for keeping that run off the board. He found it by commissioning a painting of the catch, which he presented to Kiermaier at spring training the next year."It happens so rarely you're in awe," Archer said. "It's an awesome feeling. They have the defensive runs saved calculation, but when you actually see a run taken away it feels so good."Kiermaier recalled the team meeting where he received the... Mon Jun 3 201915:21Bell's Bounce; Pirates slugger embracing simple approach
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The conversations were polite but also respectfully blunt. Little small talk. No sugarcoating or coddling. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Josh Bell would have seen right through anyway. So when newly hired hitting coaches Rick Eckstein and Jacob Cruz sat Bell down early in spring training and plotted a course to unlock Bell's potential following an uneven and borderline disappointing 2018, they didn't minimize his importance to a franchise whose narrow path to contention relies heavily on the 26-year-old's immense shoulders.Instead, they leaned into it."I think he was still unsure of what type of hitter he was," Cruz said. "(We) were telling him how we viewed him as an organization, the power hitter he can be."The attributes were there. The hand-eye coordination. The strength. The smarts. The work ethic. Each powered by perfectionism not always suited for a game where moments of excellence are fleeting and purity is nonexistent.Eckstein and Cruz had heard the reports.... [More]

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jameson Taillon's surgically repaired right elbow is intact. That's about the only good news for the Pittsburgh Pirates ace, who will be shut down for at least a month after the pain he'd been dealing with off and on since spring training was diagnosed as a flexor tendon strain. The team placed Taillon on the 10-day injured list Saturday after he complained of lingering pain following a victory over Texas on Wednesday. The 27-year-old is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts this season. He's the second member of Pittsburgh's rotation to go on the injured list in the last week. "So I was just pitching with it and managing it and then it hit a point where I realized this was probably something different."Taillon... [More]

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates ace Jameson Taillon will be shut down for at least a month because of a strained right elbow. The team placed Taillon on the 10-day injured list Saturday after he complained of lingering pain following a victory over Texas on Wednesday. Taillon is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts. The 27-year-old said he's been dealing with discomfort in the right elbow — which underwent reconstructive surgery in 2014 — for much of the season but that the pain usually dissipates between starts. When it lingered on Friday, nearly 48 hours after facing the Rangers, he went to the team. The ligament repaired during his Tommy John surgery remains intact, but he will get a second opinion early next week.Taillon is the second Pittsburgh starter to hit the injured list in the last week. Chris Archer is dealing with inflammation in his right thumb. The Pirates called up reliever Tyler Lyons on Saturday. Lyons went 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis.Pittsburgh also activated middle infielder Kevin Newman (right middle finger laceration) off the injured list and sent utility player Pablo Reyes to Indianapolis.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
