2B Jose Peraza batted .429 in 21 at-bats in the seventh spot in the order, after hitting just .209 in 86 at-bats batting second. Manager Bryan Price wasn't sure if the pressure of batting second got to Peraza, but says he's seen a better overall approach at the plate since he was dropped in the order on April 30. "He was swinging at pitches that weren't really good pitches to hit both early and late in the at-bat," Price said. "I think he's really just settled down. He's going to be an excellent hitter. Peraza hit sixth on Saturday and went 0-for-5 with a run and RBI.

Mon Mar 27 201718:11Reds season preview: Time to speed up rebuilding
CINCINNATI -- How much longer? That's the question on the minds of many Cincinnati Reds fans going into the 2017 season. While most pundits agree the Reds still are a year or two away from being reasonably close to wrapping up their rebuilding process, there are a few pieces of the puzzle that should fit better this summer. For one thing, the everyday lineup is pretty much set now that the club dealt Brandon Phillips to the Atlanta Braves and handed the second base job to talented prospect Jose Peraza. It's still possible that shortstop Zack Cozart could be traded, which would open up the position for 23-year old Dilson Herrera. There is not much suspense left in the batting order.Center fielder Billy Hamilton is coming off a breakout year offensively. Left fielder Adam Duvall was a National League All-Star who hit 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs in his first full season in Cincinnati. And, Joey Votto was, well, Joey Votto, hitting .408 after the All-Star break. The Reds' rebuild focuses... [More]

INF Jose Peraza was acquired to be the Reds' second baseman of the future, but when trade attempts involving Brandon Phillips fell through, Peraza was relegated to the bench. A late-season injury to Zack Cozart opened the door at shortstop, and Peraza took full advantage. In 72 games, Peraza batted .324. It's likely Cozart or Phillips could get moved this offseason, opening the door for Peraza to have a regular role.

INF/OF Jose Peraza likely will remain with the club for the remainder of the season. With Zack Cozart out for a few more days due to swelling in his left Achilles tendon, Peraza is getting playing time at short. Minor league seasons end soon, so manager Bryan Price expects to retain Peraza provided he is playing regularly. On Monday, Peraza had a career-high four hits, including two doubles.

INF/OF Jose Peraza has homered in consecutive big-league games, putting him one homer from tying his professional career high of three. Manager Bryan Price said Peraza has the tools to become more of an extra-base producer as he matures. "He hasn't shown that (power) component since he's been with us," Price said. "I don't think historically he's been a very big home run hitter. But he just turned 22 this year. He's shown the bat speed and the ability to lift the ball. I'm confident that he'll be a little more prolific as an extra-base, slugging percentage hitter." Peraza was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday to provide some depth with Zack Cozart out for a few more days with swelling in his Achilles. He went 2-for-4 on Sunday.

INF/OF Jose Peraza was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday in an effort to find him playing time. In limited duty, Peraza went 22-for-93 (.250) with 10 stolen bases. "It's hard to justify (someone) who you feel is a major-leaguer getting just a couple of starts a week," manager Bryan Price said. "I'm sure he's disappointed. I'm sure he felt like he could go in and play left field, but we see Jose as a middle infielder. We could've plugged him into the outfield, but in the long term, we see him as a middle infielder."

Sun Jul 17 201603:37INF/OF Jose Peraza waiting turn
INF/OF Jose Peraza is waiting his turn. With Brandon Phillips banged up, Peraza got the start at second base on Saturday. "It's imperative we have someone here like him to step in," said manager Bryan Price, who said Peraza needs to play in at least four games a week otherwise it'd be more beneficial to send him to the minor leagues. Peraza went 1-for-3 on Saturday.
