Sat Mar 23 201919:08Reds' Scooter Gennett will miss first few months of season
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett will miss the opening months of the season with a severe groin strain, costing the Cincinnati Reds one of their top hitters less than a week before opening day.Gennett injured the right side of his groin Friday while making a play on a groundball hit by Milwaukee's Yasmani Grandal. He had an MRI, and the Reds said Saturday that he's expected to miss two to three months."He is in a lot of pain," said manager David Bell, who was with Gennett when the medical staff read his MRI. "He wants to play so bad. That makes it tough, but he's already thinking positive."The injury forces the Reds to rearrange their infield — which had been one set area of the team — heading into the season opener Thursday against Pittsburgh at Great American Ball Park. Bell plans to move shortstop Jose Peraza to second base and use newcomer Jose Iglesias at shortstop. The injury is unlikely to alter the team's plan to start top prospect Nick Senzel at Triple-A.... Fri Mar 8 201916:09All-Star Gennett unsure of future with Reds as season starts
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Scooter Gennett is unsure of his future with the Cincinnati Reds even though he's coming off one of the best two-year showings in franchise history.Gennett can become a free agent after this season, his third season in Cincinnati. The Reds acquired several other players who also are in the final years on their contracts in a series of trades to try to dig out of last place. Gennett would love to stay in the city where his career took off, but the Reds haven't offered a deal.So the second baseman has to see how the season plays out heading into July, when the Reds might be tempted to trade some of their potential free agents if they're not in contention in the NL Central. Gennett said there are no ongoing talks with the club."There hasn't been much interaction," Gennett said. "We weren't going to figure anything out before spring training. It is not the right time for them. It's not like they don't know I want to be here. It's not like I don't know they want me to... [More]

Few players do.But Schebler has played 49 games at the spot over the last three seasons. New manager David Bell has given Schebler the job, eager to see it he can make the transition from right field — by far his most familiar spot — and give Yaisel Puig a chance to settle in somewhere else in the outfield."Schebler is going to play all over this spring, but I'm interested in seeing him in center field," Bell said. "It's valuable that he can play all three positions in the outfield. There's no question he can play at this level."The question is how the Reds' new components fit together. They let Hamilton leave after years of trying unsuccessfully to improve... [More]
