ATLANTA (AP) — With a second straight trip to the playoffs firmly in their sights, the Atlanta Braves had plenty of options for improving their roster at the trade deadline.They could've pursued a position player to replace the injured Nick Markakis. NEW YORK (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have purchased catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Arizona Diamondbacks.Murphy hit .177 with four homers in 25 games with Arizona before being sent outright to the minors and off the 40-man roster in June.Atlanta has Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers splitting catching duties. ATLANTA (AP) — Braves starter Sean Newcomb has left the game in a scary scene after being hit in the back of the head by a line drive off the bat of Philadelphia's J.T. Realmuto.Newcomb was checked by a trainer and walked off the field under his own power in Atlanta, escorted by two trainers Saturday.The ball was clocked at 102 mph and caromed off Newcomb's head and sailed into the netting behind the Phillies' dugout on the third base side. Realmuto covered his mouth with both hands as he ran to first base on what went as a ground-rule double.The play occurred in the third inning at SunTrust Park. Newcomb turned his head as the ball approached and knelt on the mound immediately after getting hit. ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have placed catcher Brian McCann on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain.Alex Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and is making his major league debut by starting in Sunday's game against the Miami Marlins.McCann strained his hamstring while running the bases in the fourth inning of Saturday night's 4-2 loss to Miami. Tyler Flowers, who has shared the starting role at catcher, replaced McCann and was hit by a pitch on his right hand in the fifth.
