Sat Aug 24 201922:02Atlanta Braves sign veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli
NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Cervelli caught on with a playoff contender, just as he hoped. The first-place Atlanta Braves signed Cervelli to a one-year contract Saturday and immediately plugged the veteran catcher into the starting lineup against the New York Mets. After recovering from his latest concussion, it was his first game in the majors since May 25."The only way he's going to get to know these guys is to catch 'em," Braves manager Brian Snitker said.About two hours before the game, Cervelli said he was still waiting for his catching equipment to arrive at Citi Field. But on the second pitch he saw in his first at-bat, he laced a two-run double into the left field corner for a 2-0 lead. He added a sharp single his next time up.Cervelli, who has a long history of concussions, was granted his release Thursday by the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates after telling them he wanted to hook on with a big league team that had playing time to offer and a chance to reach the postseason. Sat Aug 24 201918:21Atlanta Braves sign veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli
NEW YORK (AP) — The first-place Atlanta Braves have signed catcher Francisco Cervelli and immediately plugged him into the starting lineup against the New York Mets.Cervelli, who has a history of concussions, was recently granted his release by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He gives the NL East leaders a veteran replacement for injured catcher Brian McCann, who is sidelined with a sprained left knee. The 33-year-old Cervelli joined the Braves on Saturday at Citi Field and was set to bat seventh against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker says Cervelli will split playing time with Tyler Flowers behind the plate and likely remain with the club when McCann returns because by then rosters will have expanded in September.Cervelli batted .193 in 34 games for the Pirates this season before getting hurt. He is a .269 career hitter with 36 home runs in 700 major league games. To make roster room for Cervelli, the Braves optioned catcher Alex Jackson to Triple-A Gwinnett and transferred left-hander Grant Dayton to the 60-day injured list.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Fri Aug 16 201918:43Column: MLB needs to protect its fans at every ballpark
ATLANTA (AP) — There's always a surge of excitement when a foul ball comes your way, mixed with a sense of dread. It's a thrilling souvenir to take home from the ballpark.Yet too many fans have been left bloody and maimed by these projectiles hurtling into the stands. One person even died. But, for some reason, Major League Baseball is playing a dangerous game by dragging its feet on requiring all teams to put up protective netting from foul pole to foul pole."I think everybody that's got a uniform on would like to see that," Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "You look up there, you can't even see the nets. I've got to think once people get there and start watching the game, they won't even notice it."Commissioner Rob Manfred is leaving it to the individual teams to decide what should be done, saying there's no one-size-fits-all solution given the different dimensions of each ballpark. We can also safely assume that MLB is doing a cost-benefit analysis, given that extra netting would... [More]

Thu Aug 15 201900:42Phillies beat up on Hamels, make Manuel's return a big hit
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper went deep twice and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 in Charlie Manuel's first game as hitting coach, ruining Cole Hamels' return home Wednesday night.Manuel was back in red pinstripes in his old dugout exactly six years to the day the franchise icon managed his last game for the Phillies. He heard "Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!" chants after Realmuto connected to make it 10-0 in the third.Hamels, the 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP with Manuel's Phillies, was roughed up in his first game in Philadelphia since he was traded to Texas in July 2015. Mon Aug 12 201902:41Bichette joins Guerrero among impressive Toronto rookies
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is just part of an exciting group of Toronto rookies.Bo Bichette was called up from the minors late last month, and in just 14 games, he already has 13 extra-base hits. He began his career with an 11-game hitting streak and also set a major league record with nine straight games with a double. Bichette plays shortstop, which differentiates him a bit from his father, Dante, an outfielder who hit 274 home runs in his big league career. The Blue Jays are 23 games under .500, but they have the makings of an exciting young infield with Guerrero at third, Bichette at shortstop and Cavan Biggio at second. All three rookies are the sons of prominent major leaguers. Biggio's father, Craig, had a Hall of Fame career with Houston. The 20-year-old Guerrero came into the season with the highest expectations among that trio. He's hitting .274 with an OPS of .805. Those are somewhat ordinary numbers, but there's still a sense that Guerrero is a star in the making. In a 1-0 loss to... [More]
Wed Aug 7 201915:095-4-3, take 2: Twins turn another triple play for Pérez
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have turned their second triple play with Martín Pérez on the mound — in a span of less than three weeks. With three runs already in for Atlanta in the third inning and the bases loaded on Wednesday afternoon, Tyler Flowers hit a sharp grounder straight to third baseman Miguel Sanó. He stepped on the base and threw the ball to second baseman Jonathan Schoop, whose relay to first baseman C.J. Cron was in plenty of time to beat Flowers. That kept the Braves from building on their 6-0 lead.Pérez was also pitching on July 22 against the New York Yankees when Edwin Encarnación grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play turned by Luis Arraez, Schoop and Sanó, who was playing first base in that game. The major league record for most triple plays turned in one season is three, with the Chicago White Sox in 2016 the most recent of several teams to do so.___More AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
