Thu Mar 22 201812:00Encore? Champion Houston Astros loaded again for '18
HOUSTON (AP) — Not long after the Houston Astros won the World Series, third baseman Alex Bregman got another big reason to smile.Justin Verlander wasn't simply a late-season rental. He was under contract with the team for two more seasons. Bregman's reaction, caught on a teammate's Instagram Live account, was one of pure joy, filled with shrieks and yelling. The Astros could have more grins in store this season: Manager A.J. Hinch will not only have the ace right-hander for the whole year, he will have a loaded rotation and pretty much every key player who helped Houston win it all last fall, from American League MVP Jose Altuve to World Series MVP George Springer and All-Star Carlos Correa.Acquired in an Aug. 31 trade from Detroit, Verlander was 5-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 43 strikeouts in five regular-season starts for Houston before going 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA and making his first career relief appearance in the postseason to help the Astros to their first title. The 2011 American League MVP... Sat Feb 24 201815:58Peacock eager to build on breakout 2017 season
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Brad Peacock went into spring training last year with the Houston Astros worried he wouldn't make the team. After the best season of his career, the right-hander's spot with the club is now secure. Even so, he's maintained the same mindset he had when his career was on the line."I still want to keep that edge on me," he said.Out of options after four unimpressive seasons in Houston, things didn't look good for Peacock this time a year ago. But his solid spring, coupled with some injuries, gave him one more chance to prove himself with the Astros. He more than took advantage of the situation, winning 13 games after getting just 11 wins combined in his first five major league seasons. His 3.00 ERA and 161 strikeouts were also the best of his career, and he appeared in a career-high 34 games.Peacock opened the season as a reliever, but took a spot in the rotation when injuries began to pile up in May. He won eight games from June 4-Aug. 4 to steady Houston's pitching... [More]
Wed Feb 21 201816:39With too many starters, Houston's Hinch must make decision
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — With virtually every position already a lock for the Houston Astros at the beginning of spring training, the toughest decision manager A.J. Hinch might have to make this spring is which of his talented pitchers won't make the rotation. On a championship team with Cy Young winners Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel, newcomer Gerrit Cole and Lance McCullers, Hinch will likely have to send one or more of his other starters into the bullpen to open the season."Poor me to have too many starters that need to be in the rotation," Hinch joked.Hinch's "problem" is one that many managers would love to have. The addition of Verlander late last season combined with the offseason trade for Cole, made Houston's already solid rotation arguably one of baseball's best.Keuchel, who won the Cy Young in 2015, bounced back from a tough 2016 by going 14-5 with a 2.90 ERA last season. The 30-year-old lefty started five games and collected two wins in the playoffs to help Houston to... [More]
Wed Feb 14 201816:59Astros start workouts with an unfamiliar ring _ as champions
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Amid the long tossing, sprinting and bullpen sessions that comprised Houston's first spring workout, the Astros also informally dedicated time to a balancing act.Never in the Astros' previous 55 seasons did they begin spring working toward winning a World Series championship while trying to store the previous season's title in the bat rack."I don't want to hang out and talk about last year forever — maybe off the field or away from work, talking to fans," slugger Evan Gattis said Wednesday. "It's incredible what we did as a whole for the city. Like I said, I still can't believe it. All that being said, you can't win the 2017 World Series in 2018."The Astros clinched their first World Series title a little more than three months ago, but manager A. J. Hinch is already growing tired of answering title-related questions."It's nice and we need to celebrate it forever," Hinch said. "That's why we're going to hang a flag. That's why we're going to give rings. This... [More]
Fri Feb 9 201817:13Houston looking ahead after winning first World Series
HOUSTON (AP) — The celebration is over for the Houston Astros after winning their first World Series last season. They don't want to think or talk about 2017. And they certainly aren't dwelling on their big win.The Astros believe the only way to build on their success is by winning again in 2018."These guys are not satisfied with what happened and they want to ... take a great team and make it legendary," general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "We're a great team, with great accomplishments. We're not legendary yet. And I think they all desire to be legendary."That sentiment was on display on Wednesday when the team's marketing department unveiled the theme for the season of: "Never Settle," words that will adorn their website, Twitter account and ballpark."The plan that Jim Crane had in 2011 when he hired me and bought this team was to get the Astros relevant as soon as possible and then win multiple championships," Luhnow said of the Astros' owner. "So we're on our way to our goal. We certainly... [More]

Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner, who worked five innings in Game 7 in 2014, was the last pitcher to accomplish the feat. Yankees RHP Jim Coates (Game 4 of the 1961 World Series) and LHP Joe Page (Game 1 of the 1947 World Series) are the only American League pitchers to pull the trick.

Peacock struck out four and was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second with just one run allowed.
