Sun Dec 1 201320:30Alex Smith productive, but Chiefs lose again
Alex Smith completed 26-of-42 passes for 293 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Chiefs' Week 13 loss to Denver.
He tacked on four scrambles for 46 yards. Smith deserves credit for making some impressive intermediate throws to the second and third levels for a second straight week -- he also did in last week's loss to San Diego -- but he again couldn't get it done in crunchtime. The Chiefs have now lost three consecutive games, all inside the division. Their record is beginning to catch up with their only above-average talent. Smith's own talent limitations will keep him in the QB2 range in Week 14 at Washington.

Mon Nov 18 201300:28Alex Smith throws for 230 yards, 2 TDS on SNF
Alex Smith completed 21-of-45 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday night's Week 11 loss to the Broncos.
He added five carries for 52 yards, with the majority of his yardage coming on a scramble against prevent defense at the end of the first half. Smith didn't take any shots downfield and generally held on to the ball too long, taking three sacks. His only success came in the short-to-intermediate passing game, with his longest play of the night a 26-yard completion to Dwayne Bowe. Despite the decent box-score stats, Smith isn't worth owning in the standard fantasy leagues and will remain just a QB2 against the Chargers in Week 12.

Sun Nov 3 201316:52Chiefs hide the quarterback again, get a win
Alex Smith completed 19-of-29 passes for 124 yards in the Chiefs' Week 9 win over Buffalo.
He rushed four times for seven yards. Smith had 24 of his pass dropbacks in the first half. The Bills were winning 10-3 at that point. In the final two quarters, the Chiefs turned their offense over to Jamaal Charles and let the defense win it. Smith is one of the most limited quarterbacks in football. He isn't worth owning in standard fantasy leagues as Kansas City enters its Week 10 bye.

Sun Oct 27 201316:20Alex Smith totals 265 yards, 2 TDs in Week 8
Alex Smith completed 24-of-36 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 8 win over the Browns.
He added six carries for 40 yards. Smith managed the game effectively, relying on short-to-intermediate throws and completing 67 percent of his passes. His first touchdown came on a 12-yard screen pass to Anthony Sherman and he later connected with Dexter McCluster on a 28-yard strike at the end of the first half. Through eight games, Smith is on track for 3,590 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He'll remain a middling QB2 against the Bills in Week 9.

Sun Oct 20 201319:36Alex Smith, Chiefs outlast undermanned HOU
Alex Smith completed 23-of-34 passes for 240 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception in Kansas City's 17-16 Week 7 win over the Texans, adding six rushes for 28 yards and a touchdown.
Smith's score was a five-yard keeper from the pistol formation with time running out in the first half. Smith continued to have more faith in his legs than his arm this afternoon, taking off at the first sign of a muddied pocket, while remaining allergic to downfield challenges. His pick came on an intermediate route with a little more than seven minutes remaining. Dexter McCluster ran the wrong route. At some point, playing not to lose is going to come back to haunt Smith, but for the now the 7-0 Chiefs surely don't want him to change a thing. Smith will be a low-end QB2 against the Browns in Week 8.

Sun Sep 29 201316:26Alex Smith throws for three scores in win
Alex Smith completed 24-of-41 passes for a season-high 288 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's Week 4 win over the Giants.
Armed with a clean pocket all day long, Smith picked and dinked his way to a highly productive fantasy day. When he couldn't find anyone open, he quickly tucked and ran for 37 yards and seven scrambles. Smith is now on pace to go 352-of-584 (60.2 percent) for 3,828 yards with 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Similar to his San Francisco days, it's the kind of line that wins real football games and provides no upside in fantasy. Smith will remain low-end QB2 for a difficult matchup at Tennessee next week.

Thu Sep 19 201323:44Alex Smith waits out Eagles in 26-16 victory
Alex Smith completed 22-of-35 passes for 273 yards in Kansas City's 26-16 Week 3 win over the Eagles, adding nine rushes for 33 yards.
Smith threw for no touchdowns or interceptions, in large part because he appeared leery of making any throw at all. Smith attempted only a handful of passes beyond the sticks, and counted on Donnie Avery and Jamaal Charles doing work after the catch to rack up "his" yardage. It was a comically conservative performance, but Smith achieved his desired goal: No turnovers in a game where the Eagles coughed the ball up five times. Smith's play hasn't been easy on the eyes this season, but he's helped guide the Chiefs to a 3-0 record in the safest possible fashion. As weak-armed as ever and allergic to risk, Smith is a low-end QB2 for fantasy purposes.

Sun Sep 15 201317:06Alex Smith manages Chiefs to another win
Alex Smith completed 21-of-36 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 2 win over the Cowboys.
Looking spry as a runner, Smith scrambled eight times for 57 yards. Of course, he rarely looked downfield and is now averaging a meager 9.42 yards per completion on the season. Everything -- and we mean everything is underneath. Despite a dream matchup against Philly's weak secondary on Thursday night, Smith is nothing more than a middling QB2.

Sun Sep 8 201316:26Alex Smith guides Chiefs to win over Jaguars
Alex Smith completed 21-of-34 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns in Kansas City's Week 1, 28-2 win over the Jaguars.
As evidenced by his 5.1 YPA average, it was a true game managing effort by Smith. He wasn't asked to do anything tough, simply taking what the Jaguars gave him. One touchdown went to Donnie Avery from five yards out on a flat route. The other was a three-yard hook-up with Junior Hemingway across the back of the end zone. Smith obviously isn't a fantasy asset. He and the Chiefs will take on the Cowboys in Kansas City's home opener next week.

Sat Aug 24 201321:51Alex Smith dinks and dunks way thru preseason
Alex Smith completed 17-of-24 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's third preseason game against the Steelers.
Smith's final statline was inoffensive enough, but he spent the Chiefs' regular season dress rehearsal dinking and dunking, rarely challenging beyond the second level of the defense. Smith's evening was symbolized by his throw on 3rd-and-10 with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter, where he threw a full seven yards shy of the sticks. Smith showed very little before the Chiefs went into their two-minute offense at the end of the first half, throwing behind his receivers on 2-3 separate occasions. He finishes the preseason 31-of-48 for 288 yards (6.0 yards per attempt), one touchdown and zero interceptions. Seemingly as weak-armed as ever, Smith is a low-end QB2 in his new home.

Fri Aug 16 201322:52Alex Smith struggles in preseason game
Alex Smith completed 7-of-16 passes for 62 yards and rushed twice for seven yards in the Chiefs' second preseason game Friday night.
Smith's supporters were falling all over themselves when he went 7-of-8 against the Saints' soft-zone defense in the preseason opener. We didn't hear much from them tonight. Smith played tentatively versus a heavy San Francisco pass rush and couldn't move the ball even when the 49ers' backup defenders came in. Through two exhibition games, Smith has completed 14-of-24 passes (58.3 percent) for 130 yards (5.42 YPA), and no touchdowns. Smith lacks arm talent to be an effective fantasy contributor.

Fri Aug 16 201310:33Alex Smith dinking and dunking in practice
According to the Kansas City Star, Alex Smith has been "mostly content to throw shorter routes in front of the coverage" in practice.
It's an indication coach Andy Reid recognizes Smith's arm limitations. Having Smith routinely challenging downfield would be a recipe for disaster. Dwayne Bowe still believes the duo will develop a deep connection. "It's all a process," Bowe said. "We've got one game down, three more to go and then the real season starts. And that's when you'll see Bombs Over Baghdad."

Fri Aug 9 201321:46Alex Smith dinks & dunks Chiefs offense
Alex Smith completed 7-of-8 throws for 68 yards in the Chiefs' preseason opener Friday night at New Orleans.
Smith led the Chiefs to a touchdown drive capped by a one-yard Jamaal Charles plunge. Smith dinked and dunked versus soft zone looks from the Saints, which he won't face in real games. Smith is a low-ceiling QB2 in 2013 re-draft leagues.

Tue Aug 6 201315:00Andy Reid has 'long coveted' Alex Smith
According to the Kansas City Star, Chiefs coach Andy Reid "has long coveted" Alex Smith, and looked into acquiring him while he was still coaching the Eagles.
The implication being, he really, really likes the guy. The Chiefs have every reason to pump up their new quarterback - OC Doug Pederson has gone as far as to claim he believes Smith is the best quarterback in the NFL - but the reality is, he's only a marginal upgrade on departed signal caller Matt Cassel. Reid is going to have to heavily alter his famously pass-happy system if he hopes to have the same success managing and manipulating Smith that Jim Harbaugh did in San Francisco.

Thu Aug 1 201310:46OC Pederson: We have the best QB in NFL
Chiefs OC Doug Pederson claims he thinks Alex Smith is the best quarterback in the NFL.
It's obviously a coach expressing hyperbole while standing behind his guy, but it's another sign that the Chiefs truly believe they can execute a pass-first offense with Smith at the controls. They've barely even practiced running the ball so far at training camp. It's the kind of play-calling that got new coach Andy Reid in hot water while in Philadelphia. Smith was little more than a game-manager while in San Francisco.

Wed Jul 24 201318:49Reid: Alex Smith will have to pull trigger
Chiefs coach Andy Reid told NFL Network that his offense will ask Alex Smith to "pull the trigger" in 2013.
It's a quietly fascinating situation because Smith has only had success in run-dominated offenses with elite defensive play, making life much easier on the quarterback with favorable down-and-distances and very little comeback mode. Reid has always been a pass-first coach, and apparently has no designs on changing that in K.C. We're not optimistic this ends well for Smith.

Wed Jul 24 201317:26Zero run plays through 2 days of Chiefs camp
The Chiefs haven't attempted a single running play in teams drills through two days of training camp.
Andy Reid has always been an ardent believer in slinging the ball around the yard. While we've yet to see any football games, early indications from Chiefs camp suggest Reid won't change his offensive philosophy to fit his talent in Kansas City. Jamaal Charles is the best player on the roster, and new QB Alex Smith has never had success in a high-volume pass game. In 2011 with the 49ers, Smith attempted the fewest passes of any 16-game starter. In 2012, Smith was on pace for even fewer attempts before getting benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick.

Sat Jun 29 201310:22Jamaal Charles: Alex Smith a Super Bowl QB
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles called Alex Smith Super Bowl-caliber quarterback.
"I think he is. He's got a great arm," Charles told NFL.com's Around The League. "He's been winning most all of his career. I think he wants to prove people wrong: That he is a good quarterback, that he can stay consistent." While Charles may be using a bit of hyperbole here, we do like Smith's fit in Andy Reid's offense and wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he finishes the season as a QB2.
