Sat Jun 1 201309:33Chiefs QBs coach praises Alex Smith
Chiefs quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy praised Alex Smith, saying "he's been everything that we thought he was."
"He's a true professional. He's in his (playbook) every day. He's always asking questions, trying to get better. He's being a leader for the other (quarterbacks) as well," said Nagy. Of course, Smith hasn't practiced with pads on yet, but this news certainly bodes well for Smith's 2013 fantasy prospects. He's a dark horse QB2 candidate in Andy Reid's West Coast offense.

Mon May 27 201309:46Smith: Reid running high-energy practices
Alex Smith calls new Chiefs coach Andy Reid's practices "high energy" and "fast paced."
"Never a dull moment out here; non-stop for sure," Smith said. "It's full speed ahead. I'm working as hard as I can and push us as fast as we can go." Backup QB Chase Daniel says Reid has been preaching tempo. "Get up and down, get on the ball." The Chiefs may not be much better this season, but they're going to shed the unwatchable brand of offensive football they played under Romeo Crennel and OC Brian Daboll in 2012.

Mon May 20 201315:03Chiefs tinkering with Pistol Spread formation
The Chiefs have been tinkering with Pistol Spread formations at OTAs.
The club hired ex-Nevada coach Chris Ault -- Godfather of the Pistol -- as a consultant this offseason. Alex Smith has some history with Pistol-like formations from his time with Urban Meyer at Utah. The added offensive dimension could make Andy Reid's system more "multiple," but is unlikely to have a major impact on Smith's 2013 fantasy outlook. He will be a low-end, low-ceiling QB2.

Mon May 6 201308:32Chiefs could owe 49ers another second rounder
The 2014 third-round pick the Chiefs owe the 49ers as part of the Alex Smith trade will become a second-rounder if the Chiefs finish 8-8 or better.

Wed Mar 13 201318:14Alex Smith not competing with Chase Daniel
Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday Alex Smith won't have to compete with new signee Chase Daniel in training camp.
"Alex Smith is the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs," Reid said unambiguously. Daniel drew hype as a potential starter in free agency before signing a three-year, $10 million contract that includes $5 million guaranteed. That's a lot for a No. 2, but Smith won't lose his job barring a season-ending injury.

Tue Mar 12 201322:34Alex Smith may restructure deal
Yahoo Sports reports the Chiefs may approach Alex Smith about restructuring his contract.
That's restructure, not reduce, but it's still notable after the Chiefs made a surprisingly large commitment to Chase Daniel in free agency. The trade price Kansas City paid for Smith should make him the unassailable starter in 2013, but he could have another controversy on his hands as early as 2014.

Wed Feb 27 201309:24Chiefs remain likely landing spot for Smith
CBS' Jason La Canfora reiterates that the Chiefs are the team most likely to have a trade in place for Alex Smith.
The Cardinals have shown some interest in Smith, but the Niners aren't going to deal him in the division and their offer was reportedly "weak" anyway. After trading for Kevin Kolb two years ago, giving up more assets for another backup quarterback wouldn't make much sense. Especially when Smith's conservative, check-down style doesn't mesh with the scheme new coach Bruce Arians will install.

Tue Feb 26 201319:24Cards 'very pessimistic' about Smith trade
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirms the Cardinals are interested in trading for Alex Smith, but are "very pessimistic" the 49ers will trade him within the division.
According to Rapoport, the Cardinals believe the Chiefs are "closing in" on a deal for Colin Kaepernick's backup. Rapoport also reports the Browns are "said to have some interest." It's clear Sunday's report that a trade was "effectively complete" was bogus, but the Chiefs are very much the leader in the clubhouse. Smith would be a poor fit in Bruce Arians' highly-vertical system.

Mon Feb 25 201316:06'Little doubt' 49ers will trade Alex Smith
A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Profootballtalk.com that there's "little doubt" Alex Smith will be traded once teams near the start of the new league year.
The date is March 12. Smith is owed a $1 million roster bonus on the third day of the new league year, and he'll almost certainly be off San Francisco's roster by then. All signs continue to point to Smith quarterbacking Andy Reid's offense in Kansas City. We suspect the price tag will be a fourth-round draft pick.

Mon Feb 25 201312:15KC Star: 'Plenty of smoke' on Alex Smith deal
The Kansas City Star agrees there's "enough smoke" behind the Alex Smith-to-Chiefs trade rumors to believe Smith will indeed be the team's starting quarterback in 2013.
The 49ers are not expected to trade Smith in the division, likely ruling out the Cardinals. The Browns and Jaguars have both said they're not in the Smith bidding. As beat writer Adam Teicher notes, "the Chiefs have issued no such denial." The Smith saga will drag on until March 12, when the trading period opens around the NFL. Expect Kansas City to acquire Smith shortly thereafter.

Mon Feb 25 201311:4849ers confident they'll be able to deal Smith
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers "believe" they'll be able to trade Alex Smith after actively shopping him at the Combine.
CBS Sports reported Sunday that a deal was already all but done. Stories from NFL.com and now ESPN seem to support that notion, though it's been disputed by the Sacramento Bee. Per Schefter, San Francisco received a "legitimate amount of interest" in Smith at the Combine, and the Chiefs are definitely interested. The Cardinals "are also thought to be." Sources tell Schefter "there is no deal in place right now," but expect one to happen right around March 12.

Mon Feb 25 201310:36Report: 49ers still shopping Alex Smith
League sources tell the Sacramento Bee the 49ers are still shopping Alex Smith.
Beat writer Matt Barrows reported earlier Monday that a trade had not been finalized, but can now confirm Smith is still being actively shopped. It suggests Sunday's report that a deal was "effectively complete" was an attempt by the 49ers or Smith's agent to goose his market. What hasn't been refuted is that the Chiefs are Smith's most likely destination in a potential trade.

Mon Feb 25 201310:08Report: Niners don't have Smith deal lined up
The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers do not have a trade in place for Alex Smith.
CBS' Jason La Canfora reported a deal was "effectively complete" on Sunday. The Bee's Matt Barrows allows his report could be wrong with the caveat "everyone fibs at this time of the year." There's been widespread speculation Smith is on the verge of being dealt to the Chiefs, but perhaps the sides are trying to put the cat back in the bag. A move couldn't be finalized until the start of the new league year on March 12.

Sun Feb 24 201319:57Browns not the team acquiring Alex Smith
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns are not the team on the verge of acquiring Alex Smith.
The Jaguars have ruled themselves out. The Browns aren't the team, either, and the Chiefs have yet to dispute their association with CBS' report. All signs continue to point to Alex Smith becoming Andy Reid's next quarterback.

Sun Feb 24 201318:24GM says Jags aren't team in Alex Smith talks
GM David Caldwell tells the Florida Times Union the Jaguars are not the team on the verge of acquiring Alex Smith.
"Not us," Caldwell succinctly told beat writer Ryan O'Halloran early Sunday evening. It's hardly surprising, as Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley have both taken turns pumping up Blaine Gabbert in recent days, while Chad Henne is still under contract for 2013. The Chiefs are the heavy favorite to be Smith's mystery pursuer. According to NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal, "everywhere I go in Indianapolis, I hear someone say that the Alex Smith-to-Kansas City deal is all but done."

Sun Feb 24 201317:54Report: Alex Smith trade 'effectively complet
According to CBS' Jason La Canfora, the 49ers have "expressed to others" that a trade for Alex Smith is "effectively complete."

Sun Feb 24 201314:05Report: Chiefs most interested in Alex Smith
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs have "shown more interest than anyone else" in trading for Alex Smith.
Yahoo's Jason Cole reported the same thing on Friday. According to Rapoport, the 49ers spent the Combine "trying to lay ground for a Smith deal." Smith would be a pure stopgap for the rebuilding Chiefs, but a mammoth improvement on Matt Cassel. He could be managed and manipulated to success in Andy Reid's system, similar to the way he was in San Francisco. It's doubtful acquiring Smith would preclude the Chiefs from taking a quarterback in the first few rounds of April's draft.
