Pierce is the more accomplished player of the two and still projects to see more minutes over the course of the season, but Rivers doesn't seem to have much hesitation about handing playing time to Johnson. Rivers said that "matchups and [Paul's] age" would dictate which player starts on a given night, with the latter reason seemingly indicating that the Clippers may be reluctant to play Pierce for both games of a back-to-back set. Because of the uncertainty regarding his availability on a given night, Pierce may represent something of a risky commodity in season-long formats, though he could still be useful in daily formats when he's confirmed as the starter on a particular night.

Pierce may battle Wesley Johnson for the Clippers' starting small forward role in training camp, the Orange County Register reports.

Although Pierce has started all but 10 games in his 17-year career, he's entering his age-38 season with more than 44,000 minutes on the odometer, placing him 19th on the all-time list. Most, if not all, of the players ahead of him remained in the starting lineup until the end of their respective careers, but coach Doc Rivers' decision may eventually come down to keeping Pierce fresh for the playoffs. In addition to the long-term ramifications, Pierce's new-found ability to act as a stretch-four will provide versatility to units composed entirely of reserves like Josh Smith, Lance Stephenson, and Jamal Crawford. With trends (his workload has decreased in five consecutive campaigns) and depth at forward working against him, Pierce is poised for a further reduction of the 26 minutes of run he garnered with the Wizards last season, no matter if he starts or comes off the bench.

The length of the contract is somewhat shocking, but considering Pierce is primarily a jump shooter at this stage in his career, he should thrive playing off the duo of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Joining a wing situation boasting J.J. Redick, Jamal Crawford, and Lance Stephenson, Pierce's optimal role likely won't live up to his standard from 17 previous seasons. In any case, the line from his sole campaign with the Wizards -- 11.9 points (on 45 percent shooting), 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.6 three-pointers in 26 minutes -- isn't out of the question as a member of the Clippers.

Pierce is opting out of his contract and will become a free agent, The Players' Tribune reports.

This was widely expected to happen, as Pierce had too many other good options to stay put. While he might not receive as much as his nearly $6 million option with the Wizards, playing for a team with a more beneficial role like the Clippers or even returning to Boston sounds pretty nice. The 37-year-old might not see much use, but where he lands could have championship implications.

Pierce is expected to become a free agent and forgo his option with the Wizards, Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports.

Although Pierce did not accept his option to stay with the Wizards, Pierce could return to the team out of free agency if they agree to a new contract. If not the Wizards, Pierce is likely headed to the Clippers to reunite with his old coach, Doc Rivers.

Pierce is set on playing in 2016 and is deciding whether to play for the Wizards or the Clippers, Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports.

It's a pretty good dilemma for Pierce to have, as the Wizards would probably like to have him back and should be able to pay him more while the Clippers could offer a team arguably closer to a championship and a reunion with his old coach Doc Rivers. Pierce has a few weeks to decide if he wants to exercise his player option and it's likely he'll take his time. Wherever he does land, it's unlikely his role expands next season as he continues to operate more as a veteran presence than a heavy-use starter.
