Cuthbert was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.

Cuthbert was up with the big league club for eight games in early-August, but the depth he provided was ultimately deemed expendable at the time. Now that the rosters are expanded, Cuthbert could see an occasional start against left-handed pitching, but isn't expected to provide significant counting stats down the stretch.

With Cuthbert seeing infrequent at-bats behind everyday starters Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar, and Mike Moustakas, the Royals determined it was best for him to play regularly in the minors rather than sitting on the bench. The 22-year-old had gone 6-for-25 (.240 average) over eight games with the Royals this season.

Cuthbert went 1-for-3 with a two-run double in Sunday's game against the Astros.

It was just his fifth start of the season as Mike Moustakas was rested against lefty starter Dallas Keuchel, and Cuthbert was able to deliver. Despite Sunday's production, Cuthbert is unlikely to see many starts barring an injury in the Royals infield.

Cuthbert was recalled by the Royals on Friday, and will see his first game action since July 9. The 22-year-old has just 16 plate appearances in his professional career, but has collected five hits and driven in two runs. Mike Moustakas will likely return to the hot corner Monday in Cleveland, however.

Cuthbert performed well enough in his first stint in the majors, going 5-for-15 in four games. He has continued to be excellent for a 22-year-old in Triple-A, hitting .272/.335/.402 with eight home runs. He figures to take over Dusty Coleman's utility spot, but unlikely to play shortstop or second base given that he's played a total of three games in the middle infield in his pro career.

Cuthbert's brief stint with the Royals came to an end Friday after Mike Moustakas was reinstated from the bereavement list. The young third baseman collected five hits in 15 at-bats as a member of the Royals this week, and will now return to Omaha, where he is batting .256 with eight home runs and 33 RBI.

Cuthbert will start at third and bat eighth, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.

Called up to replace Mike Moustakas, Cuthbert will get his first career MLB start after being called up earlier on Monday. He held a .708 OPS in 285 at-bats for Triple-A Omaha in 2015 and is just a temporary replacement until Moustakas returns.

With Mike Moustakas placed on the bereavement list, Cuthbert will likely be up for just the next few days for his first major-league stint. The 22-year-old third baseman owns a .256/.318/.389 slash line for Triple-A Omaha this season, and the Royals are unlikely to rush his development.

Cuthbert finished the spring slashing .240/.286/.400 with a home run in 17 games.

Cuthbert will begin the season with Triple-A Omaha after spending the end of the 2014 season at that level. In 25 games with Omaha, he slashed .264/.330/.385 with two homers, but the 22-year-old may still be at least a year away from earning an opportunity in the big leagues.

The bump-up was deserved after spending a season-and-a-half at Double-A Northwest Arkansas. After struggling in 64 games last year at the affiliate (.215/.279/.359), Cuthbert displayed a considerable handle of the level in 2014, slashing .276/.342/.420 with a career-best 10 homers and nine steals in 355 at-bats.

Cuthbert started the game at second base, and committed his second error in as many games. He has been hot as of late, hitting .385/.442/.615 during his 10-game hitting streak, and .311/.366/.467 over his last 32 games. Cuthbert has primarily played first base over the past month, but is slowly beginning the transition to second base to see if he can turn into an adequate second baseman, which will give his bat more opportunities to be in the lineup.

Cuthbert has been playing first base since Hunter Dozier was promoted, but he will be shifted to second base after he can get more practice. The move would be a solid bump to his fantasy value, particularly if he keeps up his hot hitting. Cuthbert is hitting .438/.471/.688 during his eight game hit streak.

The Royals promoted third base prospect Hunter Dozier from High-A Wilmington to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and shifted Cuthbert across the diamond in what appears to be a permanent move. Cuthbert was never the best defensive third baseman, as he had 19 errors in 58 starts at third base. He has hits in each of his last five games, and it will be interesting to see how the defensive switch impacts his hitting.

Cuthbert has the talent to be a .280 hitter with 20-plus home runs, but he seems more likely to fail to reach his potential. He has been young for every level, but he needs to consistently produce to revive his prospect status. He has improved his K/BB rate in 2014, with 14 walks and 13 strikeouts, which is always a positive sign.
