Sat Mar 30 201916:04Pirates at Reds game postponed because of rain
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds got a game deeper into this season before having to call one off.The second game of their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates was called off Saturday because of rain. The start was delayed 40 minutes before it was postponed with storms forecast all evening. It'll be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on May 27.It was the majors' first postponement of the 2019 season. Fifty-four games were called off last year — the most since 1989 — largely due to cold, wet weather at the start of the season. The Reds have called off only 16 games during their 17 seasons at Great American Ball Park. Two were postponed because of rain last season, including the season opener against the Nationals that was pushed back a day. Both teams will stay with their scheduled starters for the final game of the now-shortened series, with Trevor Williams opposing Sony Gray in his Reds debut Sunday. Fri Mar 29 201920:33LEADING OFF: Harper a hit but still hitless, Darvish vs TEX
A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:BRYCE CHECKBryce Harper was a hit on opening day in Philadelphia, getting plenty of applause in those gaudy green Phanatic spikes . But he's still hitless, something he'll try to change when the Phillies continue a series against Atlanta. Harper was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Thursday, though his intentional walk set up Rhys Hoskins' seventh-inning grand slam in a 10-4 victory. The Braves' Bryse Wilson is set to oppose Philly's Nick Pivetta.YU AGAIN?Chicago Cubs righty Yu Darvish makes his season debut after an injury-shortened year — he'll face some former Rangers teammates when he starts at Texas. Darvish hasn't pitched in the majors since last May 20, when elbow trouble sidelined him in his first season since signing a rich deal with the Cubs.Darvish made his big league debut with Texas in 2012 after playing seven pro seasons at home in Japan. He was 52-39 with a 3.42 ERA in 122 starts for the Rangers before they dealt the four-time... [More]

Mon Mar 11 201920:21Reds' Lorenzen pitches an inning, moves to center field
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Reliever Michael Lorenzen has begun the Cincinnati Reds' mound-to-outfield experiment, pitching one inning and then moving to center field Monday in a game against the Cleveland Indians. It didn't take long for the ball to find him.Lorenzen chased Jose Ramirez's leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 5-5 tie, his biggest test during his first time in the outfield."It was fun," Lorenzen said. "I didn't necessarily get any fly balls but I had a couple hit to me. Hopefully next time I get to run one down."The Reds are exploring options for replacing center fielder Billy Hamilton, who signed with the Royals. Lorenzen was a center fielder at Cal State Fullerton who also closed games on occasion. The Reds drafted him as a pitcher in 2013, and he has lobbied for a dual role in the majors. He finally got his chance Monday.Lorenzen came on to pitch the bottom of the fifth inning and retired all three Indians, two by strikeout. Tue Feb 12 201919:11Reds open camp with new manager, rotation and hope
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — A new manager and coaching staff. Three new starting pitchers. The Reds begin their season with a whole new look and hopes that their run of last-place finishes could be coming to an end. There's a very different vibe as Cincinnati opens camp with its first workout by pitchers and catchers on Wednesday. Offseason trades remade the rotation and the everyday lineup, sparking hope after four straight 90-loss seasons."There is a lot more expecting to win and a lot less hoping to win," pitcher Michael Lorenzen said Tuesday. The change started at the top. The Reds fired manager Bryan Price after a 3-15 start last season and decided not to keep interim Jim Riggleman. David Bell was hired as manager, a move that resonated with Reds fans. His grandfather, Gus, and father, Buddy, played for the Reds. The 46-year-old Bell inherited a roster that lacked proven starters, the main thread in the losing seasons.
