Wed Mar 27 201309:39Red Sox option C Lavarnway to Triple-A
Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket; reassigned RHPs Anthony Carter and Jose de la Torre to minor league camp.
The Red Sox are set with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross behind the plate, so cutting Lavarnway doesn't come as a surprise. The 25-year-old batted just .136 (6-for-44) with one double in 16 games this spring.

Fri Mar 15 201316:39Ryan Lavarnway goes 0-for-5 for BoSox
Ryan Lavarnway went 0-for-5 on Friday to lower his spring average to .133.
Lavarnway's struggles might have something to do with the fact that he was essentially told there was no spot for him before camp even started. That said, he certainly could have helped his chances of getting traded to a team that would use him had he performed well this spring. He doesn't have much of anything left to prove in Triple-A, but that's where he's bound unless Jarrod Saltalamacchia or David Ross gets hurt.

Sat Feb 9 201312:03Lavarnway unlikely for Opening Day roster
Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said he doesn't expect to carry Ryan Lavarnway on the Opening Day roster.
It's not unexpected news, but serves to confirm what we already knew was going to be the case. Barring a trade, the Red Sox are set to open the season with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross as their catchers. After struggling with a .157/.211/.248 batting line in 46 games this past season, Lavarnway will look to get more seasoning in the minors.

Sat Dec 1 201220:24Red Sox unlikely to shift Lavarnway to first
While there had been some speculation to the contrary, the Red Sox are unlikely to shift Ryan Lavarnway to first base to allow them to carry all three of their catchers.
The David Ross signing led to speculation that Lavarnway might change positions. But the Red Sox aren't going to mess with that for now. It's possible that he -- or Jarrod Saltalamacchia -- will be traded.

Tue Sep 18 201223:24Lavarnway's two-run double leads Red Sox
Ryan Lavarnway smashed a two-run double in the seventh inning on Tuesday night, helping the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Rays.
Lavarnway is still hitting just .170/.237/.283 through his first 106 at-bats, but he'll likely continue to draw starts at DH over the final two weeks of the season and could hold value in AL-only fantasy formats.

Fri Sep 14 201223:13Lavarnway homers, plates four to lead Red Sox
Ryan Lavarnway homered and drove home four runs, leading the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto on Friday night.
He finished the night 1-for-3 plus a walk with a run scored and four RBI. His three-run blast off Aaron Laffey evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning. He then added a sacrifice fly to tack on a valuable insurance run in the eighth. He's struggled mightily at the plate this season, hitting .165/.235/.275 with two homers and seven RBI through his first 91 at-bats.

Wed Aug 1 201216:57Red Sox recall Lavarnway
Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lavarnway was batting .295/.376/.439 with eight home runs and 43 RBI in 83 games this year at the Triple-A level. He possesses serious power potential but probably won't play enough this time around on the major league roster to warrant fantasy attention.

Sun Apr 1 201210:36Ryan Lavarnway sent down
Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lavarnway posted a scorching .429/.488/.486 batting line this spring, but with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach locked into roster spots, there just wasn't room for him. He'll play every day at Pawtucket.

Sun Mar 25 201210:30Lavarnway gains steam for Opening Day roster
The Boston Globe suggests Ryan Lavarnway should be a candidate for the Opening Day roster.
Lavarnway has projectable power, but can't manage a staff or call a game. The question is whether the Red Sox believe the Jarrod Saltalamacchia-Kelly Shoppach tandem will be better than a Saltalamacchia-Lavarnway tandem. Lavarnway is batting .429/.469/.464 in 31 plate appearances this spring.

Sun Mar 18 201212:54Ryan Lavarnway not expected to make team
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine doesn't expect to carry Ryan Lavarnway on the Opening Day roster as a third catcher.
"If the season started tomorrow, it would not happen," Valentine said. Lavarnway is batting .471/.500/.529 this spring, but the Sox will start him at Triple-A even though Carl Crawford will need a DL stint to start the season. The 24-year-old has plenty of potential with the bat and should see time with the big club at some point in 2012.

Sat Mar 17 201216:44Ryan Lavarnway goes 3-for-3 in tie game
Ryan Lavarnway went 3-for-3 on Saturday as Red Sox and Orioles split-squads played to a 3-3 tie in 10 innings.
The Red Sox weren't planning on carrying three catchers, but they might have room for Lavarnway if Carl Crawford goes on the DL as appears likely. Lavarnway, who might already be one of the AL's top offensive catchers, is 8-for-17 this spring.

Wed Sep 28 201114:16Ryan Lavarnway in lineup for BoSox finale
Ryan Lavarnway will indeed start behind the plate for the Red Sox in Wednesday's season finale against the Orioles.
As expected. Jason Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are both nursing injuries, but the young Lavarnway earned another look after slugging his first two major league home runs on Tuesday night. He'll bat fifth against right-hander Alfredo Simon.

Tue Sep 27 201122:50Sox beat Orioles behind Lavarnway's 2 HRs
Ryan Lavarnway was the offensive hero for the Red Sox Tuesday, belting a pair of homers while driving in four runs.
Jacoby Ellsbury also went deep -- as he usually does -- but it was Lavarnway that was the surprise star. The blasts were the first two of the youngster's career, as he received his first start behind the plate only because Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jason Varitek are banged up. The win kept the Sox tied with the Rays for the AL Wild Card.

Tue Sep 27 201114:31Lavarnway starting at catcher Tuesday vs. O's
Ryan Lavarnway is starting at catcher for the Red Sox on Tuesday night against the Orioles.
Lavarnway has caught only nine total innings in the major leagues this year, but he'll be behind the plate for a crucial Tuesday evening matchup with the O's. The Red Sox have tumbled to a tie with the Rays in the American League Wild Card standings. Jason Varitek (knee) and Jarrod Saltalamacchia (collarbone) are both down with injuries.

Lavarnway batted .304/.407/.391 in seven games with the Red Sox earlier this season and should see quite a few pinch-hitting opportunities down the stretch. He could also make a handful of spot starts at DH in order to give David Ortiz some rest.
